With each passing year it becomes more and more clear that the Brands brothers scare their wrestlers into being afraid of making a mistake. It is so clear that there is a lack of enjoyment and fun in that room. Iowa gets more and more boring to watch.

Iowa’s cardio looks way below par

Part of this conversation might potentially benefit from discussing which schools do and don’t care about their wrestling programs. Hate to say it, but it often feels like if wrestling programs aren’t actively adding to the reputation of their respective schools they start running the risk of being shut down. Doesn’t help that wrestlers tend to be a rowdy bunch who don’t always pay the most attention to their schoolwork.

I’m guessing you are relatively new to wrestling if you do not remember an era of 1 point freestyle takedowns. The entire point of the discussion is a change of rules which materially affects the nature of how matches are conducted and navigated. Freestyle and Greco have undergone a litany of such changes in an effort to stay relevant or “entertaining” in the eyes of the IOC.

How Long Will Bono Last at Wisconsin?

I’m on board with the concept of people coming together as individuals for a collective cause that they believe in and support. Adhering to dated delineators with the stated goal of emphasizing differences is not something I’m supportive of. -
That’s a pretty hefty bait and switch to assert that bc I’m also a fan of freestyle wrestling it means I’m on board with the entire ruleset. International wrestling is a clusterf*ck. Both greco and freestyle have been through more rule changes than I care to count since I first started wrestling. I hope very much that folkstyle doesn’t turn into that. A move like this is a considerable step in that direction IMO. Also, since you brought it up, 90% of the wrestling I did lifetime was folkstyle, and I’d say 75% of what I watch in a given year is folkstyle. I’m a folkstyle fan first and foremost.

I am sorry to say I think you are missing out in the fundamental concept of what it means to be American. Also, people have been finding ways to differentiate themselves for ugly means pretty much forever. We don’t need people running around identifying with the things that differentiate them from their neighbor rather than embracing shared commonality. And to be clear, if you’re going based on Italian ancestry, Bono and Smith are by no means minorities and this conversation can end right here. -
There are much better things to write a movie about. A simple reboot would be terribly predictable, and would do women’s wrestling an immense disservice. I hope they come up with something original that respects and examines the unique position of women’s wrestling in the US rather than making a reboot which only continues to send the message “hey, we just kinda made the same thing for you. We didn’t examine your perspective and build a unique and compelling story around that, that would be too much work and too risky. Btw your character’s name is Loudina Swan.” Vision Quest and women’s wrestling both deserve more than a money grab.

Lol, I don't know what part of the country you’re from, so I mean this without ridicule, but that era passed us by ~2 generations ago. If you want to count italians, you’re putting yourself in a place where you’ll have to count all the irish, Scottish, and German coaches as well. -

Ouch. Now obviously have to give credit to Olejnik, not everyone turns these things around. Hamiti is also enormous, the weight might be getting to him. He is also by and large a two-trick pony and may have been figured out. He has sneaky ankle picks, and will try to catch you in a cradle in the transition. These are things that always wow a college fanbase because they rarely happen, but if you are able to avoid being headhunted, and have the strength to stay in good position when he tries to tether-ball himself off your neck in one direction and the other, you’ll most likely be alright. -
What about if we add in the major twist that ISU somehow lands Gable as their AD?

He would do very well wearing a Penn State singlet for a year, he’s perfect for that room style-wise. -
Hendrickson’s hurt. He blew out his knee in the finals of world’s he’s just not admitting it yet.

You can now buy wrestling history.....for a price!

Coming from a teacher here, you can usually get those off if you color over them with a dry erase board marker -
They haven’t had the opportunity in years. That has a very bad habit of stopping itself. Also, lol son everybody looks like a worldbeater against a smaller person who is out of shape and can barely stand up.

I am thoroughly enjoying the pandora’s box that the ncaa has opened. They by no means have the bandwidth, intelligence or wherewithal to enforce their own rules in a fair and just manner, and are clearly resorting to the schoolyard tactics of “making an example”. I’d also like to ask if anybody knows, is there language in school administrator contracts that prevents them from gambling? Same for the NCAA and conference officials? I have a very hard time believing that the people who always hold athletes to a higher standard than themselves aren’t doing this to protect some sort of personal interest.
-
This is going to be a shitshow. This is the gambling version of the DARE program from back in the day. “Don’t do drugs kids, btw here is exactly what all the drugs are that you shouldn’t be trying.”

Lol, too true too true

Lol, christ, are these the guys who are moving in to try to compete with flo? God help us. At least UFC broadcasts are more reliable.
-
Man, be careful. That is a gross false equivalency. Pointing at someone who was so personally destructive to himself and those in his vicinity because of personal demons and using that as a “see they break rules too” is both unrelated and really gross. Please stop with this line of argumentation, it’s disrespectful to both sides of the comparison.

This rule is as air tight as a screen.

Sorry man, this one went out the door a long time ago, police need to feel like doing something about it, or be motivated from above, and they find a way to investigate. You’re in the state of Iowa, and you’re going after two of the most well known sports teams in the state, in the exact area that is making tons of national headlines and truckloads of NCAA adjacent revenue, and you’re “just following the bread crumbs?” Coincidences don’t line up that perfectly in the face of the sort of influence that Iowa wrestling has. Someone is trying to make a statement, albeit an odd one, within the state of Iowa.

Are we talking recruited as generational or actually became generational? I think we could definitely throw Ben Askren on here for the overall impact he’s had on reshaping wrestling. Another who get’s little discussion anymore but was as good as they come, stephen abas.

I want to throw Max Dean in the ring as a potential candidate.
