Damn. Pretty not cool behavior by the kids father
Nak21 replied to Caveira's topic in College Wrestling
Horrible all around. I agree on the apology is just words, future actions will speak louder as to whether he’s truly sorry and has reformed his ways. But I can’t get over that he’s not only his coach, but also his Dad. This is just the only incident we’ve seen, I’d imagine there have been others at home and in public that weren’t caught on video. Where’s Mom in all this? Guy needs some help, some counseling, maybe some time apart from his family to get his head straight. Feel bad for the kid, that’s the obvious victim here. -
Happy April Fools. Rules committee made their changes last year and we live with them for 1 more. The FOLLOWING year (changes are every 2 years) they can reconvene to fix (or damage) the sport further. Stalling needs to be addressed. Some very specific and very draconian measures have to be explicitly spelled out to give the refs cover to make the calls. Backing up. Dropping to a knee. Finger grabbing/interlacing/locking that was pulled last cycle was possibly the dumbest thing they’ve done in a while and needs to be reinstated and with penalties (ie stall calls and/or pts). All these things need to be spelled out explicitly in the rules to provide cover for the refs - wrestler A backs up and drops to a knee off the whistle, immediate warning followed by stall calls for each infraction - refs need cover and if that happens, guys maybe get dinged 3-4 times in the 1st 15-20 secs of a match. Locking up the fingers - immediate warning and stoppage, stall calls and/or pts every time after - certain teams wrestling against a certain team need to wrestle or they face a lot of penalty points early and often. Refs need to get very involved in matches early to right the ship and drive future behavior, both in matches and over the course of a season.

Not much money in wrestling, with a few exceptions. Can’t imagine most assistants make much. All these guys do it for the love of the game, even the few doing it for big money I think don’t care about the money. And it’s a rough game. HEW is a thing for coaches too. Can’t fault these guys for moving in another direction to provide better for themselves and their families.

Which team will win the Portal Crown this offseason?
Nak21 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
What is our metric here? Most guys? Most money spent? (We’ll likely never know this for certain) Most best guys? Revisit March 2027 to see how transfers made out? Seems Iowa will contend on some of those criteria. I’ve seen projected lineups speculated here that have upwards of 5 weights where a portal guy might be needed. SlumLord Millionaire doesn’t mind throwing bags around, ROI be damned. Iowa St is being mentioned as maybe having a head start pre-4/1 and is being mentioned with a a small handful of studs…solid percentage of Stanfords roster ending up in Ames?? Seems the last 3-5 yrs the wrestling off season has been more fun and has more drama than the actual season!! Let the games begin!! Gentlemen start your accusations!!!! -
Congrats MM!! Well deserved!

RIP Coach. Always enjoyed watching his teams compete.

Well they still don’t seem to get it, so we keep telling it. I have it on good authority that Messenbrink gets the same NIL money and Revenue Share money as Spenser Li does.
-
Messenbrink gets zero NIL money, no Revenue Share money either.

On the bright side just think of all those new gmail addresses that have been created. Nigerian princes are excited for all the new opportunities to share their fortunes.

I don’t know what Bob Dole means so i avoid it all costs. The pile of crap is pretty self explanatory and comes in handy around here. A lot. I use the wrestling emoji reaction for good stuff.

125- LL still. Same ugly match 133- Jax again, by a little more 141- Mendez, I agree I don’t think Vega winning would happen twice 149- SVN, he’s more aggressive and they prophylactically fill his nose with super glue 157- Who cares, can we re-wrestle the semi?? So the guy who shoulda woulda coulda won actually wins this time 165- MM, you could wrestle this 9000 times and the result never changes 174- Levi but he scores a TD or 2 184- McEnelly in another close snooze fest 197- Barr by more 285- Trumble again

Look at the heat maps at the bottom of this Flo piece. I reiterate, Rutgers should be better. They need to do something…coaching change at the top, fresh faces at assistants, somehow get more resources from outside donors (AD finances are a mess)…something! https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/15685422-by-the-numbers-the-2026-ncaa-wrestling-championships?utm_source=iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wrestlingnewsletter&utm_content=article&utm_term=02_wrestling_triggered_newslettertues_engagement_subs

Well…when he gets his 4th-6th surgery, I hope he remembers to limp on the correct one this time and points on the doll to where the boo boo is, otherwise he might be getting his 1st or 2nd wrong site surgery. Although given the payday that would bring, i probably just gave him an idea…

That’s a horrible thing to wish on a country.

How exactly do you peak for wrestling?
Nak21 replied to Not creative name's topic in College Wrestling
I’m gonna spill the beans. Dodgeball. Early season, light throws, you get hit, you’re not out, you just do 10 pushups and you’re back in. It’s fun fun. Late season, you throw to maim, all head shots. Out is out, you ain’t coming back in. It’s serious fun. Shhhhhh. keep this to yourselves. -
Undefeated freshmen - a threat to Cael?

Undefeated freshmen - a threat to Cael?
Nak21 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Yes, 20 yrs into his coaching career, long since retired from competition, Cael Sanderson sits awake every night stroking his Hodge trophies and whispering “My precious…” over and over thinking about those threatening undefeated freshman who might join his club… This is gonna be a long off season with the pastry… -
The financials are separate. No funds are coming from the NLWC except for their expenses - like paying a wrestler on their roster. No NLWC money is going to PSU kids while they’re enrolled and wrestling for PSU. As for how people are donating and if one didn’t exist it’d go to the other. PSU is on top of the world right now, highly successful program, it’s not shocking Kraft took care of wrestling and gave the 3rd biggest chunk of the revenue share. PSU wrestling is also probably bringing in more revenue than it ever has, so that makes an AD happy, but it still costs probably a few 100k more than it makes, but that’s part of the game. PSU supports like 30+ sports, think it might be 32ish, one of the biggest ADs in the NCAA, and the only program that makes money is football. Basketball (which is abysmal at PSU), hockey, wrestling, you just hope don’t lose too much and if they’re successful (ie hockey, wrestling) you deal with the loss because you have a winning program. No colleges are getting rich off Athletic Depts.
-
Whether it’s believed by some here or not, if some of the first questions asked are about money or if parties are leading with money questions, PSU likely isn’t a fit for them.
-
Can individual sports opt out? I thought it was all in or all out??
-
You would be correct. Wrestling is and always has been a non-revenue sport. They all lose money. Now, PSU, Iowa, Ok St, Ohio St might lose less because they bring in more but as a general rule with college athletics if it’s not Mens D1 football or basketball, it’s a money loser for your AD. Back in the day before the huge TV/Media contracts, a solid percentage of football and basketball were money losers too. Colleges aren’t fielding athletic depts to make money or atleast not much money…spending $200M to generate $210M doesn’t give you much of a profit margin.
-
The NLWC is its own entity and doesn’t factor into the University financials at all.
-
Well. Ashnault worked out. I always liked that kid. But with the others…Suriano, Knox and Camp…maybe Rutgers should avoid being the Wayward Boys School for NJ 4x Wrestling champs after they leave/get tossed from their 1st and 2nd choices. And focus on landing more of the depth NJ has. Cuz with what they have in a 250mi radius around them, they should perform better both in season and at NCAAs.
