I think we’re a bit early on this. DT followed Cael from ISU to PSU. Jax was an Okie St lock with or without DT. He had long standing relationships in Stillwater and was theirs to lose regardless of coach. Not exactly apples to apples. Jax hasn’t even had a post season yet. DT was a 4x finalist, 2x champ, Hodge winner, ended up a World and Olympic champ. Let’s maybe tap the brakes for a few more weeks (years). It’s only what? 23 more days until almost all our msg board beefs and hypotheticals get played out right before our very eyes? A little patience people. The kids gonna be great I think and DT is and will continue to do big things out there but like it or not it’s still a PSU world for 2 more years.

I’m not sure either. Good question. I’m curious too. They have a set number to get to, but different ways to get there if the Big Ten gives them some excess. Spread it to other conferences? Maybe another SoCon kid or 2 gets to live a dream? Or does it go into the at large pool and a kid on the bubble or 2, get to live that dream? @SetonHallPirate any thoughts or info on this??

I think i saw somewhere (multiple somewheres actually) that Iowa may only allocate 4-5 guys. That’s gonna p!ss off some Big Ten coaches I’m sure. The Iowa guys that don’t allocate will still likely qualify but they’re “stealing” a spot from another guy in the conference. None of these guys, including most of those Hawks, are gonna do much at NCAAs but still, could be a handful of on the bubble Big Ten guys who don’t get that shot at an NCAA dream. Sucks. Just the way things are working out this year.

With a Big Ten and NCAA title, I think Levi will end up right at 100 or slightly above.

Not that I can recall. But I also can’t recall them being this bad and trotting out that many backups, etc. That dual was doomed from the start given the lineup. Healthy and before they tossed the 197, they squeaked by at NDIs. This may be the most wounded version of the Hawks heading into the end of the year we’ve seen so far. Whether it’s perception or reality, the idea of the Hawks always banged up and ground down come post season is NOT being helped by this years version.

I would think sometime this week? But it’s a formula, northeast is snowed in, some diehard will probably crank it out before the NCAA does.

Arnold/Ryder no takedown call (reaction time)
Nak21 replied to BaldAt23's topic in College Wrestling
I thought it was a takedown. And what a major let down, Gabe shoots the first time in his wrestling career and is rewarded with that? Great. He’s never doing that again… Seriously though, he got screwed, twice. Didn’t even get dinner or any drinks first. -
Atleast on paper and speaking hypothetically, Schwab seems an upgrade to me. Erisman from Little Rock I’ve mentioned in the past too. I think he has Iowa roots too?? It is interesting someone mentioned how it seems there’s bad blood between former Hawks and the program, the ones who might make good assistants. Lots of problems in Iowa City it seems and minus a one weekend recent recruiting haul which is still a long ways from panning out, it’s mostly not good news coming out of Hawkeye land.

Pretty much what I’ve heard. RS, get him acclimated to the US, school, language, culture, folkstyle, all while working to try and get him a 2nd year of eligibility from the NCAA. I’d expect him in the line up next year at either 133 or 141. He seems to be acclimating well with the team and having a blast. Still don’t think I’ve heard anything definitive on his eligibility - 1 year vs 2 - so we’ll see there?

Well. Football drives the whole AD ship and always has, so no surprise there. Wrestling is the most successful program on campus lately so I’m happy they’re getting support. Usually it’s PSU abysmal Mens basketball program draining funds. I’d like to see W Volleyball, M Lacrosse, M and W Hockey get even more financial love and see what they can do with it. College athletics is and always has been big money and have and have nots.

I didn’t bust out the calculator but in my head I got well north of $5m. Coaches salaries aren’t specified, just given a rough number, that could account for a bit. I’m not an accountant, but I’m gonna trust PSU isn’t playing any games here on a public document…outside of the normal GAAP game everyone plays. Different schools have different methods of classifying revenue, etc etc. NLWC to my understanding has nothing to do with the university and wouldn’t be on their books. Guarantees were pretty well spelled out as reimbursement to teams for travel, lodging, meals, etc.
-
It’s not really, the documents are pretty much publicly available, it’s a state school. I found financials in about 30secs. And no, they likely dont pay like that unless last year was an anomaly, I doubt it was. Sure they throw some reimbursement, but it’s penny’s to the overall AD budget and even minuscule in wrestlings financials. This isn’t football with major pay to take a beating games in the 7 figures. They paid $18k last year. I bet that was reimbursing 2-3 teams for travel, food and lodging.

Here, I’ll help, pg 51, “Guarantees - Men’s Wrestling $18,000” Thats what was paid out for the whole season to opponents during the reporting year. https://storage.googleapis.com/gopsusports-prod/2026/02/05/IW8b4ZXbrdkZIDoc9OFKuwsOMrNWoYNqwPs8w3Gl.pdf

Mirasola next year could be a legit title contender
Nak21 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Agreed, last summer means nothing past last summer. We’ll find out soon enough. All these kids are getting better. We’ll see who’s improved the most. -
The check. 6 figures. I doubt Princeton got paid to come AND if they did, it likely was a small amount to cover travel, lodging and meals for a day/night, MAYBE MAYBE a small “appearance fee”. Even at PSU, wrestling is a non-revenue sport, an AD loss leader, a dual at Rec Hall might bring in what? maybe $100-200k revenue tops with tickets, concessions and merchandise. But PSU in a money losing sport is paying a team like Princeton 6 figures to come take a beating?? Please. I don’t buy it, you mentioned you worked for PSU athletics before, provide some AD work documents showing PSU is paying the Princeton’s of the world big money to come to Rec Hall for wrestling, otherwise this is just the pastry being the pastry.

Are you high? Drunk? Seriously, if this is schtick, kudos for the commitment to the bit. If it’s not, seek help. It’s semi scary you’re out there in society, mingling with the rest of us.

Braeden Davis may not qualify for NCAAs
Nak21 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Davis didn’t look good. But that’s Davis, he’s always been sloppy and head scratcher at times. I don’t see him being 0-2 and not qualifying. I haven’t seen any official numbers yet but the Big Ten will likely have a large number (7-10 maybe ) slots at 141, like they historically have at almost all weights. You’re saying he’s gonna finish like maybe 11th or worse. Bad gas tank aside, he has conference wins and I expect him to get 1-2-3 more in a few wks and qualify. NCAAs are a different story and I’d be shocked (happily) if he AAs, I’d probably be shocked if he made it to the blood round. His points would be nice, but they’re not needed, PSU is winning and by a large margin. -

Agreed. This isn’t HEW. Feel bad for the kid. He lost a year last year to injury/surgery recovery, came back this year, got hurt AGAIN, took a month off and tried AGAIN to come back and got hurt AGAIN almost immediately. That’s not HEW to me, kid tried and tried to make a go of it, his body just wouldn’t allow it. Wish him luck in future life. -

Nak21 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
He could be in the mix this year, you never know. He’s getting better and growing in confidence. Next year, hopefully with another 10lbs on his frame (he’s struggled to add and hold weight, I’m not sure he can add much more, he’s not a overly tall or big framed kid) and more importantly some strength gains, with 285 thinning out a bit, he’ll be in the conversation. -
No idea how JJ factors in. An embarrassment of potential riches at these weights. There’s gonna come a point where even with RS, gray shirts, Olympic redshirts, you’re not gonna fit everyone in and kids may have to sit a year or two or transfer. For now JJ is a 2yrs ish from now problem (he’ll RS year 1 at PSU I’d imagine).

PSU/Princeton and Iowa/OSU Draftkings betting lines
Nak21 replied to BaldAt23's topic in College Wrestling
Ooofff. They’re gonna cover 125 from Princeton…wtf was that? -
They need some changes, some new blood. I don’t think Gilman would be a good fit at the Head Coach level, doesn’t strike me as having the temperament/maturity for the head job. Great assistant potential and I love him being at PSU, but not sure his “I don’t give a f@#k” attitude towards things flies when you’re the head guy. I don’t think Brands is going anywhere, so maybe Iowa can hope for some new assistants to breathe life into the program?
-
Well. PSU is kinda good at wrestling. I saw this list earlier and it was pointed out immediately that it was missing Barr. Anyone know why?? He has 15 matches I believe. Typo? Typical NCAA excellence in everything they do?? Is he lacking in some measurable you need to be listed???
-
This kid gonna stick with wrestling? How’s football factor in? Is he gonna try to do both at Okie St?
