  1. I respect it. I'm high on Pinto as well. I'm also high on Gabe. Maybe too high given his limited college resume. But hopefully we'll see it happen. I'm very intrigued.

I made the mistake of being too low on Gabe before the Oregon state match when he had Wittlake. I thought he’d put up a fight but lose a one TD match. Maybe I am underselling him again but I think the size difference would play an even bigger factor against Pinto who is a bulldog in his own right.

This may be all for naught, however, since Arnold has expressed that going to 184 was a one time thing. I don’t see it happening but maybe for a tight dual.

  2. How much better, if any, do we see Pinto being than Feldkamp? I think Feldkamp and Pinto are very similar both in terms of style and results. I think Gabe controls where the action takes place and wins one that is close on the scoreboard, but never in danger.

I see Pinto as substantially better than Feldkamp tbh. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pinto against Keckeisen in a finals match and wouldn’t be surprised if Feldkamp didn’t AA this year. Pinto does go upper body, yes, but I think he’s more difficult to get underneath and is much quicker on his feet. I also think he’s actually capable of leg attacks. Whereas Feldkamp if you can avoid being thrown (difficult) and can get past his head and hands to his legs, you’re probably going to win.

  3. You are really looking over taylor, kid is a real talent.

I don’t doubt he’s talented. But he doesn’t have nearly the wins to warrant any type of confidence in him over Caliendo. Who is an AA in a brutal weight class and looks to have jumped levels.

  4. Ridge might get bonus. Also don't sleep on antrell taylor and Arnold beating Pinto? Don't see it

I don’t see Arnold beating Pinto, but I also don’t Taylor coming close to Caliendo. I think it’s more likely a bonus point win for Caliendo than a win for Taylor.

I also think Lovett gets bonus.

  6. With the schedule Columbia as put together this year I’ll pick them to break thru. It seems they certainly want their guys big time battle tested.

This ^. I wish everyone would run the beginning of their season like Columbia has. Schedule the toughest you can find, and duck nobody. Their guys don’t have very good records right now but I am rooting for them to outperform those records come March.

  7. Looks like Bono is getting the best HWT, and had to go outside Wisconsin to do it.

He was the best today, he’s 1-1 with Mirasola this season. Also, doesn’t he intend on playing football as well?

  8. I'm surprised that Minnesota isn't even ranked...not in the top 30. That's pretty low for a well known program.

Not very good this year. Salazar should AA but also should’ve last year. Losing Nagao really hurt. McKee could do something in the circus that is 125 as he’s a tournament wrestler, but he looks so banged up. Blockhus probably reached his ceiling taking 8th last year and now he’s up a weight.

Then you’ve got a bunch of inexperienced sophomores that can do who knows what, but haven’t done nearly enough to warrant being ranked higher than in the 20’s. I think 141 Vombaur, 149 Roberts, and HWT Tabor will be viewed in a better light by the time big tens rolls around.

  9. Name me the one recruit in those two classes that should be tabbed to be a national champion like Gable Steveson was coming out of high school.

There are very few if any recruits on Gable’s level. He won an Olympic gold while still in college lol.

I think McEnelly and Hopke are both capable of winning a title some day though. But not Gables level.

  10. Now answer another one. How many quality wrestlers committed, signed and them transferred lately.

Uhhhh 4 I believe. I think you missed the part where I was never arguing in favor of Eggum. I literally just gave you a list lol. I’m not a huge Eggum fan by any means.

  11. Multiple. AA’s??????  Back out Gable and list them by season.

Multiple. AA’s??????  Back out Gable and list them by season.

Im not trying to argue for or against Eggum right now; but since 2016 theres been
    Lizak three times
    Brett Pfarr twice
Mitch McKee (senior season stolen by Covid)
Devin Skatzka (senior season stolen by Covid)
    Pat McKee twice
Brayton Lee in his only NCAA tournament he got to wrestle
    Jake Bergeland 2022
    Aaron Nagao 2023
    Michael Blockhus 2023

I think every year since 2016 there’s been at least two per year. Averaging three I believe.

  12. Anyone who follows Gopher wrestling closely knows this was a no-brainer.

Rodent, you know that’s not true. He’s far from universally liked. That doesn’t make those people right, but there are definitely people that follow close that want him gone.

  13.  Agree he doesn’t look like himself. The arm has to be a big reason why (IMO). I’ve watched matches in the past where he would try until he got it (especially against guys he’s wrestling the first time) Doesn’t seem to be the case now.  I always enjoy watching guys that he’s caught in the past wrestle him again and seeing how they adjust against him.

It was pretty funny watching Andrew Sparks wrestle Cook in 2023 after getting tossed and pinned off his own shot in 2022. Pretty much didn’t engage at all on their feet until OT, where he lost. He was terrified to even tie up with him.

  14. I imagine someone that committed recently, like DeLuca, already had a pretty good idea the Ferraris were going to be on board and what they were about. It probably won’t help potential recruits that are interested but not committed though.

  15. Nah, it's still early season and a tough time for weight cutters.
McKee will come around in January and be more than fine. I expect a big final year for Patrick.

I would love this very much for both him and the team. It’s entirely possible I’m being too pessimistic which has happened before. The way his year went last year was not encouraging though.

  16. His wins over Farber and Zaccone were dominant.  He lost to Bouzakis after a hard fought 6-3 loss to Orine.  And Bouzakis was on a tear on the backside at CKLV.  We both know that he avenged the loss to Wells.

Carlson, Sloan and DeVos have all had a number of losses to lesser opponents than Orine, Bouzakis and Wells.

He did avenge his loss to wells, but a win like the one he had is what you should expect against a true freshman. Just because he avenged it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I’m talking about impact come tournament time. I don’t think Cardinal is AA level at this time, and I’ve watched a looot of Derrick Cardinal since his Forest lake days. Really good wrestler, but I don’t see that level.

Regardless though, my point of my original question was beyond Cardinal and more the team as a whole. How will they replace all those departures?

  17. Cardinal is looking pretty good.

He’s having a decent start to his season, but he only has two top 20ish wins again Farber and Zaccone, and has been tech’d/pinned by two true freshmen in Wells and Bouzakis.

I think he’s still a long ways away from being the level of contributor that Carlson, Devos and Sloan are. And that’s the kind of contributor SDSU needs to keep finding.

  18. Clay Carlson isn’t on a medical redshirt. He will be back soon.

Gus - at the risk of totally derailing this thread what are your thoughts on SDSU beyond this year? Carlson, Cook and Sloan are all in their last season. Devos and Jordan only one more year than that. The recruiting trail seems to have run relatively cold for a squad that looked like they’d be top-15 or so for quite a while? Berge and the Swensons will be pretty good, but I’m not sure they’ll ever be Sloan level.
