  1. At some point I would think they will lose some of the outstanding talent they have to the portal. If I was a top 10 wrestler, I would have a hard time sitting on the bench for a year or 2. With all of the NIL money floating around you would think it would start happening. It's great to be wrestling for a phenomenal team with great coaches, but if you can't make the line-up, ( because you have an NCAA Champion in front you) and you could start on just about any other team. I wouldn't blame them for going into the portal. It's a good problem to have if you are Penn State.

I have no idea how they’re going to get full four years out of Haines, Mesenbrink, Sealey, PJ Duke, Facundo, and Zack Ryder. It’s going to be quite the log jam. But, Cael always gets it to work out. Asher Cunningham and the older Gibson are good wrestlers that may never start.

Edit- somehow forgot Will Henkel, who is damn good as well.

  2. Figueroa was injured and did not wrestle much/well for a large part of the season.  In the last month of action, he took down all of the following:

I’ve watched Pat McKee wrestle well over 100 matches, probably closer to 200 matches counting high school, and I can’t remember anyone dominating him as bad as Figs did in that round of 16 match. I wasn’t really considering him a title threat before that, but afterwards I felt much more confident in it.

  3. Two Gable records Cael won't touch. Winning the Conference 21 straight years  he coached and nine straight NCAA Titles.
Most others are within reach if he stays as head coach.

I think he could certainly win 9 straight NCAA titles. 21 straight conference championships no though.

  4. For wrestling the Pac-12 will still have WSU, Oregon State, CSUB, Cal Poly, and UALR - for now. ASU will have a new home in the Big12, but maybe Stanford will re-affiliate for wrestling? There was talk of the non-revenue sports staying out West to save on travel but I don't recall if it was Stanford/ACC.
Cal Bap, AFA, NoCo, UVU would be a nice geographical fit if they wanted to reaffiliate with the "new" Pac. Saves the Big12 schools a little bit on treks out to and from the likes of CA, WV, ND.

I think some realignment between the pac 12 and big 12 for wrestling is long overdue

  5. What weight does Lilledahl go and does he redshirt? If he wrestles right away either Davis or Nagao are likely out of the lineup.

    Next year
    125 Davis, Lilledahl RS
    133 Nagao

    Year after
    125 Lilledahl, Davis RS
    133 Nagao

    Year after
    125 Davis
    133 Lilledahl
Nagao graduates. Seems pretty seamless to me. Could flip around Davis/Lilledahl redshirt years if they want too.

  6. I was pretty adamant on a couple of posts that I thought Nick Feldman would come in and win a title on day 1. I will eat crow on that. Hindsight 20/20 kind of a silly prediction haha.

  7. Rumor has it that Smith is stepping down at Mizzou and Askren is taking over as HC.  But, you know how rumors go!  As easy to start as a grass fire during a drought.

I heard Smith is stepping down and Maple is getting the job. The reason he didn’t take the OU job was because of this. Just what I heard.

  8. As a Gopher fan it was a pretty embarrassing year. My wife as a casual fan said “We are in only 22nd place? is the coach gonna get fired?”

They are going after guys who are poor program fits. Remember Chittum was committed for a year as well. We haven’t been able to keep guys from outside the region here. Here is what I would do for next year

    125-Morvari Fr
    133-Wells-So
    141-Vombaur-Jr
    149-Roberts-Jr
    157-Brenner-Jr
    165-Millard True Fr
    174-Wester True Fr
    184-McEnelly Fr
    197-Salazar Sr or Nelson Fr
    Hwt-Hopke True Fr

As based on recent history, you get NOTHING from redshirting guys,  they just leave anyways. Wrestle your best team every season.

Millard is a 157 would struggle to win a match as a starting big ten 165 and Wester is worse than Millard. They’ll both redshirt. Need a transfer at both spots.

  9. Absolutely, if Reader takes the Central Michigan job I would assume it’s a done deal. Michigan at 174 makes sense. I would actually like to see him go wrestle for his fellow Italian Mike Poeta at 165 for Illinois as well.

If he hits the portal, I hope he was good buddies with Trent Hillger and Taylor LaMont and follows them over the border west. Gophs need a 165 bad.

  10. Why are so many guys leaving?  Personality clashes with the coaching staff?  That is a startling number of starter-level talent.

Different circumstances for each. The only two that had the same reason were Spratley and Jamison.

  11. This is a neat statistic, but I would’ve traded this for just five qualifiers if all five actually did anything. Disappointing season for the gophers for sure.

  12. Not sure if this is true. but it's pretty amazing if it is. wonder if anyone else did this?
the announcers said a couple different times that Minnesota lost like 5 starters to the portal/wwe
and still qualified 10 wrestlers for NCAA tourney.

Brayton Lee, Troy Spratley, Aaron Nagao, and Tagen Jamison all qualified for NCAA’s this year for different teams after being on MN last year. I believe that’s what they were talking about. Cael Carlson was the other one who narrowly missed qualifying for Oklahoma.

  13. So he commits to a school and they train and develop  him for  four years and then he realizes they don’t have his program.

Look at programs and tell we what Iowa has compared to NdSU

A lot of kids, athletes or not, go to different schools for their undergrad than they do for their grad degree. My brother did his undergrad at NDSU and is getting his graduate at Rutgers. It’s very common and sometimes even encouraged to get different experiences.

  14. Love to be on a fly on wall for this, like the Guys going to Iowa or Olenjik from OSU.

Sorry smaller program u developed me and trained me along with investing money in me.   But these bigger programs now are interested in me even though they never recruited me four years ago.

Wasn’t Olejnik a grad transfer? I look at those guys in a different light. It’s possible that NIU doesn’t even have a grad program in his degree. There’s a lot of factors that could come in to play there.

  15. Wonder if Clayton Whiting from Missouri doesn’t hit the portal. Lost his 184 spot to Hawks and O’Toole is bumping to 174. Whiting was a highly ranked recruit out of Wisconsin AWA guy with some nice wins in his first two years.

  16. wait just to clarify - did Willie confirm that it was a rumor or that he was definitely going to transfer?

Willie tweeted today that Mcgonagle is currently in the portal

  17. The hawks are going to be circling Bailey and Little from Little Rock. I hope they both stay and help Erisman build that program.

Gus, unrelated question for you as an SDSU guy, do you know if DeVos and Jordan are planning to return for another year? If so, SDSU will be salty again next year.

  18. I heard him say Wyatt Hendrickson to Mizzou.  Anyone else I missed?
Sounds like they believe Cardenas to Michigan has a good chance.

Can you even transfer out of a service academy? Aren’t there certain commitments that come with attending one of those? Or am I imagining that.
