  1. This interview of Steve Mocco tells you everything you need to know about Bobby Douglas. At the 2003 NCAA tournament Steve came in as the #1 seed. In his first match Steve was called for an illegal move against his Iowa State opponent, who got injured to the point where Assistant coach Chris Bono was going to have his wrestler take the win via disqualification against Mocco. Coach Douglas was in the stands and saw what was happening. He jumped down from the stands and ran across three mats to make sure his wrestler didn't win that way. He had his wrestler resume the match for one second and then he had his wrestler medically default. This allowed Mocco to advance and ultimately win the title that year. What a class act Coach Douglas was! P.S., The Iowa State wrestler was able to wrestle his next match, but lost in OT.
  2. Zinkin and two-time U17 World champion Sammy Sanchez are both in the 120 bracket at this year's upcoming California CIF state tournament. They are seeded to where they would meet in the Finals. Here's to hoping that happens.
  3. It's so funny how many times I have seen it spelled that way recently. It must be a keyboard thing.
  4. Speaking of man strength and the age differences between Byrd and his freshman competitors, consider this. Byrd is a 7th year senior who wrestled at the 2017 Cadet World Championships! Marcus Blaze won't be 20 until late November. Byrd graduated from high school in 2019 and will be 26 in September. Jax Forrest will be 20 in October. Here are some more wrestler ages that are interesting: Bo Bassett will be 20 in August. Penn State commit and senior Jayden James just turned 17 last week. Levi Haines will have finished his college career before he turns 22 in August.
  5. True, but for recruits, soon-to-be recruits or up-and-coming recruits, the only dominant team they have ever known is Penn State. Here is the team and individual titles breakdown since the 2011 season: Individual NCAA tiles: Penn State (40), Oklahoma State (10) and Iowa (8). Team titles: Penn State (12), Iowa (1) and Oklahoma State (0). For youngsters, recent history has been all Penn State. It is going to take some sustained success from David Taylor for recruits to view them as the new shiny thing, even with Jax in their line-up. Taylor is doing a phenomenal job of recruiting currently, so we will see how much they cut into Penn State's recent dominance. I'm sorry to say that it is going to be very hard for Iowa to not fall further and further behind. Ohio State and Virginia Tech will probably make up the other top four teams. I think the next few seasons are going to be even more exciting for us fans as the team title chase will be tightening up.
  6. He did look very tired, but he really poured on the offense that match. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaching staff worked them hard that week. Overall, though, I think Duke's conditioning won't be an issue in the postseason. I actually find a Shapiro/Duke matchup intriguing. That weight, along with 133, is going to be so fun to watch at the NCAA tournament.
  7. If Levi wins the B1G tournament and a National championship, his college record will finish at 101-4, which would place him #10 on the Penn State career winning percentage list at 96.0%.
  8. Regarding the second stall call on Arnold, this is what the 2025-26 and 2026-27 NCAA Men's Wrestling Casebook says regarding when to call stalling in a kickout situation at the OOB line: "A.R. 5-17. Is it a mandatory stall call when a wrestler kicks out from a lower leg hold? RULING: No. A wrestler who stays in bounds while kicking out of a lower leg hold in either the neutral or down position, should not be called for stalling unless the referee believes Rule 5.7.1 (avoiding wrestling as an offensive or defensive strategy) applies. If, however, a kick out by a wrestler results in an out of bounds call being made by the referee, then the wrestler kicking out shall be called for stalling (Rule 5.7.8)" (emphasis mine) My question is if Arnold's kickout actually pulled Ryder out of bounds? Unfortunately the footage angle doesn't show Ryder's foot that is nearest the OOB line. My assumption would be that if Arnold's kickout pulled Ryder out of bounds then a stalling call would be warranted, but if Ryder stepped out of bounds on his own then no stall call would be warranted. And for those who are not aware what the NCAA Wrestling Casebook is, it gives various and numerous (42 pages) examples of wrestling and officiating scenarios, and how to properly handle them. It is an excellent resource for referees, wrestling officials and us wrestling fans who enjoy learning the intricacies of wrestling officiating. Here is the link: https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/wrestling/rules/mens/2025-27PRMWR_CaseBook.pdf Edit: P.S., Also, in slow motion, it can be seen that Ryder momentarily and just barely goes out of bounds in that sequence. That would have been an interesting challenge had Iowa made it.
  9. I do find the lack of reactions takes away a lot of what makes a forum enjoyable to follow. Without the reactions I will never know if anyone likes this post or not unless they quote it : )
  10. Unless or until he gives some specificity to his allegations, it seems prudent to just keep an open mind and see if he makes any clarifying statements in the future. He did mention he will continue to talk about this. He stated that people in the locker room were involved in his S.A. and called him the N word. He also said he had people laughing at him and calling him a monkey. If down the road he clarifies what individuals did and said what and under what circumstances, then at least we outsiders would have some specific information with which to form a reasonable opinion. Information that would be great to know are things such as were any witnesses present when these incidents occurred? Did he talk about the incidents to any acquaintances, friends, counselors, coaches or law enforcement? If so, how long after the incidents was it when he spoke of it? He obviously doesn't have to answer these questions, but without those sorts of details and any subsequent follow-up investigations, it's my opinion that it is unwise to take a strong position one way or the other.
  11. Technical violations do not affect stalling calls point progression. 1st stall (warning), 2nd is one point, 3rd is one point, 4th is two points and the fifth is a DQ. For technical violations the sequence is 1st violation is one point, 2nd violation is one point, third violation is two points and a fourth violation is a DQ. See the Penalty Table on page 64 of the NCAA Wrestling Rules Book for the sequencing and penalties for various violations and stalling. For anyone who would like it, here is the link for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 NCAA Wrestling Rules Book PDF: https://ncaapublications.com/products/2025-26-and-2026-27-ncaa-mens-wrestling-rules-online-pdf
  12. You just need to look forward to what can be, unburdened by what has been.
  13. I think it would be more fair for the Hodge to go to a Ranked Choice voting format. Regarding the comparison between Mendez and Mesenbrink, Dicemen99 had this to say over on Penn State's On3 forum: Mitch - 100% (1st) bonus, 5.28 (1st) dominance rating, 14 match terminations in 17 contested bouts Jesse - 89.5% (4th) bonus, 4.89 (4th) dominance rating, 14 match terminations in 19 contested bouts Mitch's RPI is 2nd, has faced two top-10 guys twice: Caliendo - MD Arajuo - TF Jesse's RPI is 2nd has faced three top-10 guys 5 times Hardy - Dec, MD Ech - Dec Vombaur - MD, TF Jesse with extra matches against the top 10, but Jesse went DEC, DEC, MD in the extra 3 matches. Pretty hard to extrapolate that Mitch doesn't do at least that good, and via track record you should expect him to do better. As it stands, in the matches wrestled he did perform better. Two extra top 5 matches where Jesse went DEC, DEC. Neither of them are losing to these guys, so...
  14. It is interesting that Barr is the only other wrestler with a 100% bonus rate and he never gets mentioned in the Hodge talk.
  15. He's just mesens with you.
  16. Some nuonced conversation in this thread, but if my thinking is corect, the truth will prevale in the end.
  17. It took me forever to find, and it is only an AI response, but this is what I found: Based on NCAA Division I wrestling rules (effective for the 2022-23 season and later), the statement that a Friday/Sunday dual weekend may count as only one "date of competition" regarding redshirt calculations is accurate. Here are the details regarding the "5-date" rule for Division I wrestling redshirts: Five-Date Exception: True freshmen can compete attached in up to 5 dates of competition during the regular season and still retain their redshirt status. Definition of a "Date": According to NCAA interpretations, multiple duals held on the same day count as one date, and a "weekend" of competition (such as Friday/Sunday duals) can be considered a single date of competition for these purposes.
  18. Thank you. And regarding my comment about Barr and Mesenbrink being the only two wrestlers left with 100% Bonus, there was no mistake on your part. I was just commenting on it, but I shouldn't have mentioned it after my comment on Byrd's spelling since it was obviously confusing and seemed to conflate the two topics. My bad!
  19. Just FYI, I posted your latest post/update over on the Penn State On3 forum since it is so informative and has so much Penn State relevance. I hope that is OK with you. Gaylon
  20. Awesome stats! I really appreciate all your hard work to compile these stats and present them in such a clean format.
  21. Interesting to see Blaze and Jax with Bonus % in the 80s with Byrd only at 25%. Just FYI, you have Byrd spelled Bryd : ) Also, Mesenbrink and Barr are the only wrestlers left with a 100% Bonus rate.
  22. I am going with Blaze at this point. He has a full season under his belt and has beaten a gauntlet of top talent. He has wins over then #6 Tyler Knox, #8 Drake Ayala, #10 Jacob Van Dee, #15 Braxton Brown and #2 Ben Davino. His defense, positioning, technique, mat awareness and mat intelligence are top notch. Plus, he has a great gas tank.

  24. I can't wait to see the Blaze/Davino match. I don't recall seeing any other true freshman so poised as Blaze. His defense will keep him in matches, and he seems to have great mat intelligence/awareness. It will be interesting to see if Davino pushes the pace or not. Marcus has been very efficient in his short offense this year, but Davino may feel his best strategy is to really force the pace to try to open up Marcus. It really is amazing how good some of these true freshmen are nowadays. It makes it even more exciting that so many of them are at 133.
  25. Here we go again : ) Messenbrink definitely won't, but Mesenbrink most assuredly will, IMHO.
