"Seth will be training talented wrestlers for the highest levels of national and international competition, in addition to being able to focus on his own training on the path to his dream of becoming an Olympian." Bono never struck me as an austere scholar, but someone should tell him what "focus" means.

Mason Gibson decommits from Penn State

total shorthorn. like tj hill -
They've had elite guys, just not more than 1 or 2 at a time. The fact that they have had people like Franklin Gomez and the Simmons brothers find success there proves that it is possible. Roger Chandler's bio says he is entering his 27th season with Michigan State. I think its time for some new blood. The facility excuse is the mantra of mediocrity.

MSU needs a new coach. It's that simple. The right person can turn that dumpster fire into a competitive program. They aren't developing people. Saldate was the same level all 4 years. What is the East Lansing Strangler up to these days?
-
They haven't been in the top 20 once in the past decade at NCAAs. They've had 4 all americans in that timeframe. Borelli was good in the late 90s and early 2000s but let's not pretend they've been anything close to good in a long long time.

Is this supposed to be funny? It's sad.

Casey Cunningham is the keystone of Penn State's success

He is unpoachable through 2030. https://pennstate.rivals.com/news/penn-state-wrestling-lands-asher-cunningham-son-of-assistnat-coach -
MMA has a huge pool of talent to choose from. They don't care about getting the best, they care about entertainment value of their fights. Wrestlers win, sure, but the UFC doesn't need them to be successful. Dana White isn't going to put a single penny into wrestling and even if all D1 programs went belly up, he would make the same money. Where is the return on their investment? There isn't one.

Active NCAA wrestlers born in the 1900s
WrestlingRash replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
It is clearly a nod to the theory put forth in the book The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy - What the cycles of history tell us about America's next rendezvous with destiny by Neil Howe and William Strauss. He is just a big history buff. -
so your plan is for mma to subsidize wrestling? the argument that mma is big so wrestling can get money from them seems to be half baked, at best.

I don't think people mind relying on handouts. I get calls from college programs during their fundraisers all the time. I had 5 coaches ask for donations this year alone. If I wasn't such a broke ass, I would gladly help. The real issue is that coaches don't understand they need to be a professional fundraiser. You can hire a group to do this for you, but it has to be a top priority - a higher priority than hiring a 3 time AA to be your 3rd assistant coach. Any coach at ANY level of college wrestling who isn't actively working to become cost neutral to the athletic department is putting their program at risk. Camps and a big youth tournament are the best way to bring in big bucks, unless you find that rare case of a super high net worth individual who can fund an endowment. You can get 5% of your endowment every year, so each school should be working towards a minimum of 10M in the bank. This is not an insignificant amount of money so you need a multi year plan to get it done - something like 10 years. Wrestling is at a higher risk of going away than ever before and the focus needs to be shifted to becoming professional fundraisers.

Chertow made one huge mistake in his hustle - instead of paying a few grand to get the hottest names in wrestling to come in a be clinicians at his camps, he made the camps about him. This is stupid because 1) there is only 1 Ken Chertow and he can't run multiple camp locations simultaneously 2) he has to continually market himself in order to convince kids and their parents that he is relevant 3) he can only run camps for so long before the body gives out, limiting the life of his business and the hard work he put in to growing a camp business.

Wasn't he from Missouri? I would think moving to Palo Alto would be a huge culture in its own right. It's the kind of place where you are considered a racist homophobe if you don't have pronouns in your email signature.

Coach Manning calling a spade a spade!
WrestlingRash replied to jajensen09's topic in College Wrestling
seems like giving Penn State some bulletin board material prior to NCAAs might not be the best idea. -
This is another case of hiring a coach who doesn't realize his first priority should be finding a way to be self sustaining financially. The cost of running a program is not small. When you include salaries, benefits, trainers/sports medicine, travel, scholarships, equipment and facilities, you are looking at 300-500K a year. Raising that kind of money for that kind of program is a real challenge, but you have club, camps, fund raisers etc. and should be able to put together a 5 year plan to make it happen. Until we become fully self funding, we will always be the first sport to get chopped.

ALL RESULTS OF THE 2024 PAC 12 WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Thank you for the information. Much appreciated. -
Good point

I will wait until I see how Iowa does at NCAAs before I am ready to say its time for the Brands Brothers to skedaddle. But, it sure is looking more and more likely that there will be pressure building on them. If they don't get top 3 at NCAAs, you'd have to think next year is their last shot to get the ship righted. Didn't Zalesky get fired for doing better than them? Its at least comparable.

Brackets were on trackwrestling. Now what happens to Little Rock, Poly, Oregon State and Bakersfield next year? What conference will they be in? -
I bet a few CMU alumni are going to apply. David Bolyard and Luke Smith come to mind, and there is no way that Jason Borelli doesn't apply for dad's job.

With a few exceptions, it actually does give you carte blanche to say whatever you want. Now, that doesn't mean there might not be social consequences, but there will be no legal ones. And, its up to the speaker to decide their comfort level with the social consequences.
-
so the NCAA's comfort with someone's statement is the barometer for whether someone is "insufferable" or not? I dunno, didn't the NCAA let a man swim against women in their championship recently? If that is your barometer, you are in real trouble. Talking about God or Jesus equates to being a flat earther for you? That is a bizarre take, when most of the world believes in God and most of the world believes in the round earth. You have a lot going on in that head of yours and I hope your anger online isn't indicative of who you really are off of the internet.

I will let them know that you are tired of it, Kenny. Imagine the audacity of a young man getting his 2 minutes of TV time and thanking God.

To be fair, half the posters on this board would look good at the pac 6s.
