Hmm, I'm not sure that these data provide a lot of insight into "easiest". Here's a hypothetical: Imagine a weight class with only three wrestlers, all of them distinguished past champions. During the season they had a round robin, and each went 1-1. That would give you a .500 win percentage and a .500 loss percentage, but I wouldn't say that that would be a weight class that would be easiest to win, necessarily.

I did watch the ACC finals. Which match are you referring to? (re: "defensive wrestling is allowed" - actually, the HS rulebook says that (1) from neutral you have to be attempting a TD, (2) from bottom attempting an escape or reversal, and (3) from the top a turn. Everything else is stalling.)

I would say those are not comparable in two ways - in your scenario one of the wrestlers is on bottom, and therefore has a more limited set of choices, and, he is doing something, i.e. he is standing up. In the example from the OP the wrestlers are neutral, and so both have the same full range of options, and one of them is not doing anything, just standing there waiting for his opponent to take all the risks. And the 'shot clock' is not a rule, so this is not prescriptive, I'm just reporting it as descriptive as to how some officials treat this situation.

Yes, red/green colorblindness is fairly common among men, which is one reason why the red light at an intersection is always at the top of the three. Professionals who design computer interfaces need to be aware of this too. When I was officiating I always instructed the table workers to give the red ankle band to any wrestler with a red singlet (and conversely, although green singlets are relatively uncommon, at least in Western PA). And when two kids had similar singlets they both needed to wear two bands. And a senior official told me when I was starting out that, although for duals home is traditionally green, you can just decide at the beginning of the event that home is going to wear red all night if that matches their singlet.

True as stated. However, HS officials I know keep a 'shot clock' in their head, and if the count is 3-0 and then the wrestlers makes a fourth one their opponent is going to draw a stall call. My personal gripe is that HS officials don't call stalling enough; college officials do a better job at this, on average IMHO.

You raise an interesting point. If you overlay a variable (# of programs by year) you might find that that explains most of the variance, and that the seeding change in NS. But you're the data guy, so let me know if my intuition is correct.

I think you and I are on the exact same wavelength. On the rare times when a HS kid gets a broadcast interview there's always the danger that he's hasn't been coached up to give the humble/sportsmanlike/work harder response and will tell you what he really thinks. At our local HS they ask the seniors a stock question, "What was your favorite wrestling memory?" and the one kid said "Stopping at Denny's on the bus ride home from the away matches." which at least had the benefit of being totally honest.

I think your basic point is right, these immediate post-match interviews are a hard gig to pull off. However, (and this is true of other sports also, e.g. the NFL, the PGA, etc.) can we please dispense with the "What does this win mean to you?" question? It's pointless, I can't remember ever getting any insight from any athlete that 'let me in a little' from this question. (Although RBY wins this weekend's prize for his answer to "What does being a Big Ten Champion mean to you?", which was essentially, "Well, actually, not that much. It's just a tournament.", or words to that effect.)

Kemerer went to the same PA high school as Lee, so there was probably some common club/coaching along the way (although since they were at such different weight classes obviously technique gets adapted to the body types). And I liked the little double entendre with respect to Desanto...
