  1. You should watch Beard's EIWA finals with Cardenas. Then report back as to who was cutting more.
  2. A school with 1900 students that fields more than 25 men's and women's teams. Sounds kind of like an athletic department with a school, not the other way round.
  3. It didn't look good. Cornella had to be helped off the floor, guys on either side helping, dragging the injured leg. I've seen miracles before, but I wouldn't bet anything that he makes it to KC. He's still in the brackets (annoyingly on Track, not Flo). Not sure about Foca. Maybe he could have continued in his final bout, but why risk it when he had a qualifying spot locked up and could only score one team point when the team title was already decided. He didn't look much different from Hines, who injured a shoulder in the semis and looked to be in a lot of pain but managed to continue and completed the tournament; different situation, he didn't have a qualifying spot assured.
  4. I don't care what the rule is, but it ought to be clear. The NCAA has done everything they can to eliminate the "fake" defaults, including making a subsequent med forfeit count as a loss, removing fake defaults from wrestlers' records in duals, changing the at-large criteria to require a wrestler to compete twice at conference tourneys .... I sure thought that showing up at a conference tourney and stepping on and off the mat wouldn't count. Maybe PSU made a valid argument that the loophole wasn't quite closed, and the NCAA agreed. But I seem to remember the phrase "real wrestling has to happen" in there somewhere.
  5. " .... move on"?
  6. Lehigh has eight. Penn does too; they picked up three at-large bids.
  7. The only reason that I can think of is that there were only five wrestlers in the at-large pool. Four received at-large bids, the fifth got the alternate. I didn't think Crawford of F&M was even under consideration (I guess he has both CP and RPI rankings) and he's got a place in the bracket.
  8. I guess we'll find out later today whether three seconds' worth of defaults counts as participation.
  9. Lehigh is sixth in individual champions (28), eighth in All-Americans (160).
  10. I haven't been involved with the EIWA seeding since 2022, which means I probably wouldn't recognize the current process if I saw it. Looking at the 2022 process and assuming that they've just changed some details (weightings of criteria, not the criteria themselves) though, Swisher might receive a decent seed. Quality wins (over someone appearing in the CP or RPI rankings) -- Swisher has beaten Crook and Rivera. Final CP Ranking -- he's 28th, which is worth a few points. Final RPI Ranking -- nope. Div I win % at weight -- Swisher has the best WP of anyone at this weight. Doesn't matter that it's just 9 bouts. Earned an allocation for the conference -- yep. Remember when we were thinking that the EIWA would have just one spot at 149 (maybe you had to read the Lehigh forum)? Got four now. Just a guess -- he draws the 4th or 5th seed. Whoever gets #1 (Ethan Fernandez?) should begin reviewing video of Swisher's bouts.
  11. I was like that, then they made me the EIWA SID. Keep posting and annoying people, it can happen to you.
  12. Sacrifice a chicken and hope for the best?
  13. If you create a system, people will find a way to beat the system. At least he actually wrestled those six bouts. His record at 149 is 8-1; his loss was by one point to Cornell's Ethan Fernandez. His weakest win was a 12-1 major decision. Strength of schedule not impressive. Hard to say that merits #28. WrestleStat is still trying to figure out what to do about him -- they don't show a starter for Penn at 149, they have Swisher ranked 11th overall at 157.

  16. TGINACMF!
  17. I'm hoping that I'm still on the NCAA's mailing list, but that doesn't always help. Either last year or the year before they didn't send an e-mail, posting the release on ncaa.com, not the D1 wrestling page. I was looking in the wrong places.
  18. Nathan Taylor. He weighs about 275.
  19. Here's one measure -- Princeton won its first dual under Ayres in his third season as head coach.
  20. You've gotta have ESPN+. Attendance reported as 2,546. The dual was at Annapolis. Here's Navy's take: The Mids needed Smith to pin No. 31 Matt Williams to win the dual. Smith opened the match on a great note by scoring two takedowns in the first period to gain a 6-2 lead. Smith went up, 7-2, after scoring an escape in the second, but Williams responded with his first takedown to decrease his deficit to just two points. Williams started the third period with an escape to make the score, 7-6. Later in the third, Smith scored his third takedown and shifted Williams on his back. Smith looked to be close to a pin on multiple occasions, but the officials only gave him a four-point near fall. Although Smith won the match by a 17-8 major decision, his win only scored Navy four points. Gunner Filipowicz upset Cerniglia at 165.
  21. Wrestleknownothing messaged the correct answer to me yesterday but suggested not posting the answer until today. So --- Ted Anderson of Central Oklahoma in 1936 and George Lewis of Waynesburg in 1948. It can't be done under current rules, so the answers come from tournaments that didn't use those rules. The 1936 and 1948 tournaments used the Olympic bad-mark system and also Olympic weight classes and rules. Losing a bout earned 2 or 3 bad marks; winning a decision earned 1; winning by fall, forfeit, or default earned none. Things we'd consider weird happened; for instance, in 1936 Lehigh's Dick Bishop lost a decision but his opponent was the one eliminated -- the guy hit his bad mark limit (5), Bishop advanced and finished 4th. In 1936 Rudy Ashman (Lehigh) beat Anderson in the first round at 123 pounds but was injured and couldn't continue. Anderson won the rest of his bouts and won the title. 1948 was more complicated. Paul McDaniel (Oklahoma State) came into Round 5 at 125 pounds with 1 bad mark; Rometo Macias had 4, Gene McDonald had 2, Lewis had 1. Five bad marks eliminated a wrestler; these were the last four guys alive. Lewis had beaten Macias and McDonald already. So Macias pinned McDonald, who was eliminated; McDaniel beat Lewis by decision. Now Macias had 4 bad marks, McDaniel 2, Lewis 4. Macias and McDaniel had not yet wrestled, so in Round 6 Macias decisioned McDaniel, leaving both wrestlers with 5 bad marks. There was no Round 7. Lewis, with 4 bad marks, was the champion. McDaniel, having lost to Macias, was 3rd. One odd note: none of these guys wound up wrestling in the 1948 Olympics. That honor went to Iowa State Teacher College's Gerry Leeman, who'd been eliminated in the 4th round. Leeman took silver at London (so .... no better than 5th at NCAAs, 2nd in the World).
  22. Some folks had him ranked as the #1 recruit; how'd he lose two?
  23. WrestleStat picked Fernandez
  24. 141, right?
  25. Cowcards gave me permission to post this question, and also suggested rewording to make it easier to understand. I'll post the answer tomorrow (unless someone gets it by then). Who are the only two wrestlers to win an NCAA title while losing a match at that year's tournament?
