If your only offense comes off of another guys shot then I do think at some point you are stalling. Plus he hand fights, down blocks and doesn't maneuver for a shot of his own which would open his stance to shots, to the point he keeps other guys from shooting l. He's not the guy who wants you to get to a leg so he can scramble and score or cut the corner and score. At least if he was that kind of wrestler you could make the better argument he wasn't stalling.

Most anticipated potential matches at NCAA’s?
PSULou64 replied to 1032004's topic in College Wrestling
I think all of the 125 matchups once you get the quarterfinals and beyond will be fun to watch and hard to predict. I think if you wrestle that bracket 10 times you have a different list of AA's each time. -
"Lol c’mon this is downplaying him big time. His run was “unexpected” largely because he was a redshirt freshman. He was 14-3 going into Big Tens last year with only one “bad” loss, and 2 dual wins over previous AA’s." He was not a top recruit out of High School and there wasn't really any knowledge about him last year. He had a great record but it was a surprise to most everyone and a lot of guys who wrestled him weren't prepared for his top game. I'm not downplaying that after his big ten and NCAA finishes PSU wasn't lucky to get him, or that he is a stud. I'm just saying he was an unexpected stud

Nagao was not a projected "stud." His run the Big Ten Tournament and national tournament was not really on most people's radar. Most of us thought he would benefit from the PSU wrestling room but also knew that he wouldn't catch guys off guard this year because they had wrestled him and seen his performances last year. I know I was just hoping he would be a AA contender and get some bonus points when he catches under prepared bottom wrestlers.

You could argue Carr at #3 vs Ramirez but I think in the end Ramirez edges him. Having Hamiti ranked above Ramirez is a non starter though. I didn't see the path at all to that argument. My guess is: O'Toole MM Ramirez Carr Hamiti

They didn't have a great tournament. It does happen and if that was the sole issue with the Brands' tenure it could easily be overlooked as an outlier but the reality is there are many issues that they have had and are having. Some are on the mat and some are off but for me the biggest issue I see tends to be the underperformance of their top recruits when it matters most. They just seem to have trouble getting their guys over that hump and compete up to their potential.

I know he thinks he can go but every wrestler would have been gunning for that leg and there are a few guys who would have had no issue tweaking it if they could. Cael is right to protect him, even from himself. I'm hoping not but this could turn into a Suriano situation. Carter could not wrestle at the NCAA tournament and then transfer and wrestle somewhere else next year. I would hope not but if his ego clouds sound decision making and judgement it could happen.

This is supposedly an excerpt from the rule book. On-the-Mat Stalling Situations This slight change specifies that the offensive wrestler must work toward obtaining near fall points and/or a pin to avoid stalling. The rule now states; “Offensive…stalling situations also include: The offensive wrestler does not aggressively attempt to break down the opponent and work toward obtaining near fall points and/or a pin.” The italicized portion was added this year.
-
This was taken from the NCAA "To help balance the new takedown scoring rule, there also are new requirements for the top wrestler to work toward a near fall or pin. A 3-point near-fall scoring component was added. " What exactly were the new requirements? I haven't seen the updated rule book but they clearly state top wrestlers would have to work toward near fall or pin but. That clearly flies in the face that merely exerting control and riding is acceptable and isn't stalling.

Ok, but if you're not trying to turn, you're riding and if you're riding, you're stalling? You can't have it both ways, right? Holding a guy down is far easier than turning him but it's obvious to everyone, including the refs, when one is being done over the other. Hanging on to get the precious minute of riding time is clearly different than trying to turn a guy. Don't you feel like it's a conflict if interest to have both avenues trying to be worked at the same time?

After watching a ton of matches this season i'd really like some clarification on top stalling. The NCAA clearly stated they would be more aggressive in calling it but for the life of me it seems to be arbitrarily called at best. Can a claw ride be anything but a ride? Can hips over hips with no bar, half, etc., be anything but a ride? As you have watched this season what are your thoughts?

I'm sorry but Orine should have been hit a second time for stalling and that stall call on Latona was a joke. Someone make the argument that Orine made any turn attempt that entire period!

How many times will the word "resilite" be said? What's your bet?
-
That was a good match. Closer than I expected. Much tighter than Caliendo/MM was.
-
Is this match going to end up being a dud?
-
This really has the strong appearance of a on Ayala's part. Trying to preserve the #2 seed at the Big Tens.
-
That makes sense. Losing, and badly, to a guy who is 50 pounds lighter and not even the starter... No sense can be made of that.

I'm just spitballiing here but have you guys considered that Nagao is wrestling a tougher schedule..... I'm just messing with you guys.... Actually I would say he was really unknown to a lot of guys last year and caught them by surprise. Not a real high end recruit, not much buzz around him until he started giving guys real tough matches and even then it wasn't really until the big tens that people really noticed how much of a match up problem he was. You also have to consider that real hard top guys, especially leg riders benefit from the wear and tear that comes in tournaments.

I'm not saying that future outcomes will be better or worse for the Iowa wrestlers but I imagine that if at Carver they wrestle their best and have 100% crowd support to motivate them, then in a tournament at a neutral site, they don't win a single rematch.

I thoroughly enjoyed the meet and have a couple thoughts: 125 is going to be very interesting. These guys are are pretty equal and anyone can seemingly beat anyone in any given day. I think Ayala and Davis were evenly matched and it could go either way at any time. I also think the knee down stance in this case would be a stall if Davis had actually attempted shots (although if starocci's throat block is a stall call than this is). Bartlett has proven he's improved. Closer matches but he definitely is better than last year. Kasak and Rathjen are pretty much equal and that match could go either way but I'm not sure either guy is an AA at this point. In any event everyone is chasing Lovett and from what I saw last night from him good luck. MM is quite better than Caliendo and I expect that gap to grow. If the matches get "tighter" it will only be due to Caliendo turning into a typical block/slowdown/low offense guy who tries to "Lewan" a victory. Starocci's may have a conditioning problem or a boredom problem. Not sure but we will see. Maybe he's still isn't 100%. Brooks is Brooks. Kerk right now is a monster. Bastida may have something for him but I think the size/strength edge will be too great.

I thought he could be a tight match. I'm glad he fought hard.
-
I never want to hear Iowa have complain about calls in away matches. Carver is a joke... It's ridiculous and the crowd is obnoxious.
-
That's what I was thinking... He looks way more beat up than that.

I would say a great stew has to have at least carrots or potatoes. Having neither is just meat sitting in gravy.
