PortaJohn Parity Thread
Wrestleknownothing replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
The good news is that it makes no difference. Both 142/149 and 150/157 had 22 unique winners in the 26 season span from 1998 to 2024. That put them 2 up on 190/197. Shorten it by a season and it is a one unique champ lead, but still a lead. You proposed unique champs as the definition of parity (and that is what I polled on), but you can also look at it more broadly through the lens of unique AAs. Viewed this way, 140/149 slides to second behind 167/174 while 150/157 plummets to seventh. But no matter how you look at it the weight extremes are also the dominance extremes. The heavies have the least amount of parity and the lights are not far behind regardless of whether you are counting unique champs or unique AAs. This, too, is unaffected by the choice of 1998 over 1999 as the start year. -

@PortaJohn suggested 1998 to present, and I am a doer not a thinker. -
Is there a 4-timer out there?

Yes, but you also have to put an asterisk next to Hall on that front. -

Ask and ye shall receive -
Without looking....what weight class do you think has had the most parity from 1998 to present? I am defining parity as the most unique winners. I will post the answer tomorrow.

The only one who did not win as a freshman was Brooks. -

Tsirtsis was a redshirt freshman and Cox was a true freshman in 2014 when they won titles. Tsirtsis wound up going 1, 3, R16, RS, 7 Cox was 1, 5, 1, 1 -
This season there are no returning wrestlers who have a chance to become a four-timer.* The last time a season started without a returning wrestler who had a chance to become a four-timer was 2010. That was the season Kyle Dake started his epic run through four weights in four years. Every year since there was at least one guy on a streak. And how about 2022? We started that season with 7 returning wrestlers who had a shot at becoming four-timers. And three of them did. * I am not including Ferrari until I am certain about the ORS he claims. Freshmen and redshirt freshmen are on a three year run without a title. Do any of the crop of freshmen or redshirt freshmen have a realistic shot at winning this season?

Trump is so wealthy

For a guy who started a thread about how to think critically about the media, you sure are not thinking critocally, nor are you expecting critical thinking by Vance or Trump. When I first heard Trump's claim my immediate thought was, "that is batshit crazy, there is no way it is true". Turns out I was right. It is a shame neither Vance, Trump, nor you are capable of doubting what certain of the media tells you. -

Are you seriously claiming that Trump or his staff is monitoring the open comment periods in city meetings and swallowing the claims without proof whole? This is the guy you think should be president? You normally don't make silly arguments. -

So you have settled on clever. What about all the other excuses Vance was workshopping? -

Hiring people to do jobs is not the cause of bomb threats. A presidential candidate going on national television and lying about those people to claim they steal and eat pets is the cause. -

Higher medical costs and higher security costs as a result of irresponsibility are not the same. Just as higher ticket prices for movies and shouting fire in a theater are not the same. I am sorry you were told you could keep your doctor, but then the plan changed. I assume you did not issue any bomb threats as a result. -

Not even remotely the same things, but I expected no less. -

The bomb threat originated with Trump's claims during the debate. -

Trump's lies caused the bomb threats, the bomb threats increased costs, Trump should pay for the increased costs. -
That he should volunteer to pay for the cost his lies about Springfield, OH has generated. Since his batshit crazy claim that immigrants were stealing and eating pets, there have been 33 bomb threats targeting city schools. City Hall and two hospitals have also been threatened. The result is that state police have been sent to the city to reassure citizens they were safe, the Office of Homeland Security is now dedicating resources to monitor social media for possible threats to the city's residents, Wittenberg college (which just resumed classes and sports after shutting down due to threats) has had to procure additional safety resources. So open up your wallet, Donald. You now have $2 billion in newly marketable securities you can use. Maybe he can sell some Springfield themed crypto, bibles, steaks, and online courses. There are just so many ways to foot the bill for the lies.

I stumbled across a Bill Simmons podcast called The Rewatchables. The idea is that they talk about movies that they love to rewatch. These are the kinds of movies that if you are flipping channels you will stop to watch that one great scene coming up (think the courtroom scene in A Few Good Men - aka "You can't handle the truth"). They tend to explore the movie through categories they have developed over the course of doing 350 of these. The categories are things like most rewatchable scene, biggest over acting, what aged the best/worst?, was this guy really any good at his job?, if you only had one Oscar to give who gets it?, and who won the movie? Highly entertaining stuff. As a result, I now tend to view movies through that prism. So my most rewatchable in no particular order: The Godfather The Godfather Part 2 A Few Good Men Twelve Angry Men (the original) Man on Fire Bridesmaids In The Heat of The Night Lilies of the Valley The Quiet Man The Departed Good Will Hunting Step Brothers Old School No Country for Old Men The Big Lebowski There Will Be Blood Kingpin What About Bob Shawshank Redemption Apollo 13 The Hudsusker Proxy O' Brother Where Art Thou Cast Away Groundhog Day Stand By Me Caddyshack Pump Up the Volume The 40-Year old Virgin The Bourne Identity Coming to America Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade Hoosiers The Fugitive Goodfellas Casino Miracle Stranger Than Fiction Austin Powers" International Man of Mystery Unforgiven Saving Private Ryan Glengarry Glen Ross Plains, Trains, and Automobiles Iron Man Casino Royale My Cousin Vinny Searching for Bobby Fischer .....and probably more.
