The number of guns citizens illegally owned and used in a few city blocks in major cities is too high for the people living and traveling to those areas.  Gun ownership is a blip concern for the vast majority.  Hot policing and economic opportunity programs are the 1-2 punch needed.

You just answered your own question. Most people don't go to the range to fire off rounds to become proficient enough with their weapon to use in a situation where it's needed. She spent over a month learning on a daily basis for work, and has a yearly qualification to meet. Most people aren't going to be trained to shoot like that, but they also don't go to the range often enough to be proficient, and their gun becomes more of a liability than anything. People drastically underestimate guns and overestimate their own abilities to handle one safely.

I have a 1.4 second draw to first shot on a 2/3 ISPC target from concealment with a hight hit percentage. I can shoot accurate 10 yard hits on that same size target with .2 second splits. Most shooting proficiency can be acquired at home without live ammo. We need to bring gun safety back to schools.

I also use a Mantis AR system and have a SIRT pistol I used most every day. It is an absolute blast training to shoot and by far the greatest skill you can aquire for self defense that you can take into old age.

I do agree that people don't respect firearms enough and are not trained enough. But Most criminals are not looking for a shootout and the victims possession is the deterrence. If its a violent attack I think you'd rather at least get off a miss than watch someone put a gun or knife to you and be persecuted. If it's a known 'fear of death situation' would you want to be defenseless, maybe in your own home?  I do also agree that their are people that should NOT be allowed to have a gun. There are restrictions and rulings that need to be enforced. But everyone who does comply the laws with safety and usage protocol and qualified should have the option to own a gun. That said there is a need for age limits, drug use screening ( I think depression and mental heath meds restrictions, and phsychiatric disqualifications, should be in place and enforced) that exist and that need better management.

There's no substitute for live rounds. My wife had never touched a gun until she came to this country, where she's from the process to buy a gun legally would make anyone who believes strongly in the 2A to swear it was a communist plot and cause their head to explode. She practiced at home on the draw frequently and dry firing, and even she said there's a big difference when live ammunition is involved.

I think we need to put stronger restrictions on buying guns. I'm not against it, but I would say a solid 25% of people who legally own a gun shouldn't. For various reasons like ones you mentioned. The idea that people should have unfettered access to own a gun in this country is insane. Even the 1st amendment has limits to it. I don't see why the 2nd shouldn't have reasonable limits that would prevent certain people from legally owning a gun.

It does already. You have to pass a background check. There are prohibited possessors.

90% of your practice is dry fire. The greatest skill to master is sight alignment on the draw. That is best done with an empty gun and a boring amount of reps. I shoot 1000s of rounds a year and would shoot more if the cost of ammo wasn't so damn high. Unless you're shooting on a Ipsc or uspsa type course shooting on an lane does very little.  Most ranges don't allow rapid fire, or drawing from a holster.

Sounds like Trump is pushing very hard to get a Nobel peace prize and probably offering better tariff deals for those that nominate him. Meanwhile, he's not really doing anything for peace except bombing Iran, supporting genocide in Gaza and getting duped by Putin while shutting Zelensky out of discussions. Oh, did I mention sending troops to LA and Washington DC (so they can basically stand there and look tough). This whole thing is pathetic.

There are plenty of cities w/ more crime than DC. I don't see it near the top of any of the most dangerous city rankings. See example: https://www.newsweek.com/map-cities-homicide-rates-crime-2112196.

Also, what are the troops really going to do to fight crime? You gonna send them in on a drug bust or to arrest anybody whatsoever? Give me a break. They're gonna just stand there and look tough like they did in LA. This is all show, again, and another waste of taxpayer dollars.

Lots of cities with higher crime rates than DC. He should send troops to Memphis. Tons of crap cities in the dirty south part of the country that are worse than DC but he'll only send them to go stand around in cities that are in Democratic states. It's all a dog and pony show.
