Do you really own your home if you have to pay property taxes forever?

Property is a limited resource so absolutely yes we should pay property taxes. When you own a property that's a property that somebody else can't access.

Property taxes should actually be HIGHER for this reason. Replace the sales or possibly income tax if you want because this is the KING of all taxes. People hide income and other assets all the time to avoid taxes but you can't hide your property. THATS WHY ITS THE KING!

And I say this as an owner of multiple properties.

typical responses by the utterly idiotic resident socialists.

if you really wanted to help the middle/lower class, you'd be against property taxes.

the barrier to entry for first time homeowners is dramatically worsened by them. it effects generations. it effects zoning. it effects the entire community and culture.

there are plenty of other tax revenues to cover for real estate, which is a tax on what, exactly? of the land you purchased merely existing?

but of course you effin birdbrains couldn't extrapolate that, could you?

First of all, you need tax revenue, so why not propert tax? It's a finite resource.

Secondly, and related to that, you MUST have property taxes. It's not an option. Think about what happens to property prices if property taxes become $0? There's basically no limit. We'd ALL be renting from multi billionaires who would buy up basically everything and rent it out.

Ya gotta think about consequences. How people react when you change tax policy.

There is no such thing as outright ownership, freedom, or privacy.  This concept is a Disney fairy tale.  Our country is structurally set up to provide us with levels of these rights and types of  ownership.

Yeah, that's already happening

Oldie but a goodie.   We need tolls just to build these roads.  Then we’re done.   Their political slogan was “toll free in 73”    That was over 50 years ago

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/growth-in-tollway-revenue-shows-illinois-never-planned-on-keeping-its-freeway-promise/

the gov is wasteful in ways I don’t think we will ever understand.  Even with doge.  They move the tax goalpost ever so slightly year over year to make this years feel  minimal…. But the reality is they are going to keep going until they tax the country into oblivion.  It won’t occur over a year.  It won’t occur during one specific administration but there is no end to their nonsense.

Illinois is #2 in gas tax behind good old Cali just and just raised the tax again.   I think we’re top ish in property and combined state taxes too ….    No end in sight as we are STILL paying hundreds of millions for bidens illegal alien scheme and they are asking to raise property taxes in Chicago / cook county specifically for that…. AGAIN.

don’t sit here and tell me it’s for “schools” either.  Chicago public schools are shyte.   Yes we need schools but this joke of a public school system is not the utopia anyone thinks it is.

yes. for the exact opposite reason.

Yes, the pace of building slowed in the last decade, foreclosures were high, exclusionary zoning rules, etc etc etc.

and a million retirees that can't afford their taxes after inflation + property spike + the ultimate stupidity of having their SS taxed.

there's absolutely no rationale for most existing (or more) taxes unless you're a shill or simply uneducated.

Show me a state with zero property taxes. How about a country with zero property taxes. Condition = where people actually want to or can live.

If such a place exists, I can guarantee that land values are off the charts. It's very simple economics.

This is just another way that wingers can make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Once you reach your retirement age (start drawing social security) you should be able to stop paying property tax on a paid off piece of property.  As someone with two paid off pieces of property that’s retired but not yet drawing SS I’m ok waiting until then.  Retired people deserve the benefit.

Property taxes here fund education mostly. So I don't have a problem. Unless I want to be surrounded by stupid people.

Our federal government run education department has already ensured we’ll be surrounded by stupid people.   Our kids can’t read or do math and there are wokester wingers everywhere

So you only pay property taxes if you are under 65? Omg you gotta think b4 you say stupid things. I'll just sell my house to my mom to avoid taxes. Dumbest idea ever.

My condo too.

Personally I think we should ELIMINATE sales tax and create a state property tax (on top of the local property tax).

Property taxes are the greatest. Wingers hate them because they are progressive and they can't cheat them, like they do on their income tax.

I pay upwards of 37% federally.  5% state.   10.25% sales tax .. 7% on property tax.

when does the government have to work on being efficient instead of taxing us into oblivion.

Govt needs to be fair and avoid corruption, first and foremost. It has to build in a lot of extra staff time to do that.

I'm tired of rich wingers whining about taxes in their mansions and 2nd homes while families struggle to put food on the table. It's pathetic.

You somehow are divorced and have two properties.   Somehow you seem to be doing just fine boss.

nearly 60+% of every dollar I earn goes to the inefficient corrupt machine.  And they keep asking for more.  Chicago wants to again….  Raise property taxes.   The gas tax just went up again.  They tax bags in the damn grocery store.  Y’all corrupt tax crazy left wingers want to tax social security.

Chicago is special case. That's an inherently corrupt local govt. I would never live there.
