Why is Harvard tax exempt?

Trump threatens Harvard's tax-exempt status after freezing $2bn funding

"Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting "Sickness?" he wrote on Truth Social. "Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!"

You want to tax them? OK, but then let's tax all private schools and also ALL churches,  and pro sports leagues. I'd be good wit Dat.

Tax all the ones that want to be political and shape what gov looks like.   Maybe they should stick to education.   Churches 100%.   Religion should be taxed.

Harvard is not a "political institution." Simply because most of the people there lean left. They aren't exactly in the middle? Wow, now that isn't a slippery slope, is it?

In the middle?

An infamous 2023 survey of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences by The Harvard Crimson found that 77% of Harvard faculty identified as “liberal” or “very liberal,”followed by 20% as “moderate,” and fewer than 3% as “conservative” or “very conservative.”

So if the "vast majority" of the faculty in one part of the college vote a certain way then federal funding should be withheld?

Protesting is fine.  Taking over buildings, damaging property and verbally abusing other students is NOT.

The school supported or endorsed those actions?

I am not sure how I feel about taxing not for profit entities, but I don't know what the solution is. I know my church doesn't have a $2B endowment.

so what happened to the students that took over the building ???

why don't you tell me who the specific students were that actually damaged the building or "took it over" and what does a "takeover" entail?

You ever been to the southern party of the country? Some extremely wealthy churches down there. Much more than in the north.

Yes. Part of my territory is Dallas so I have seen the crazy mega churches. There are for sure "for profit churches" too.

Their Endowment fund is 51.98 BILLION dollars. I think their federal funding is 2 billion dollars.

You are correct. I misread that. My church has neither.

I would say the large Mega churches are less than  .5 percent of all churches. The smaller churches generally do a lot of good in their local communities.
