Or the one in Germany?

Surely those will be the first factories re-patriated to the US. Certainly he and Trump wont be hypocrites on this one, right?

No. It makes no sense.

This is the other half of the equation that people don't realize(though...I suspect you do).

When you have reciprocal tariffs that are SO out of whack like that, you NEED to export from other Countries or you're being punished for being an American both when buying the materials to buy the car, then when you sell the car. And how can they compete with BYD when it has ALL those markets with low tariffs(just as we DID prior to Trump's latest nonsense).

So I'd imagine you're going to have some factories shut down and leave the US and some open back up.

Right now, there are Ford and GM plants that are just empty, their workers told to go home last week as they have no idea what the future looks like.

THAT is a LOT less money coming back into America. Taht is a LOWER tax base, that is less money, THAT is an increasing debt...

That's 32,000 jobs coming back to the US in the next few days. Can I get an amen?

Oh, also, Musk broke with Trump and said he'd like to see no tariffs...(at least in the EU).

Probably going to REALLY hurt "our" attempt to beat BYD to the autonomous market or in EV sales.

He must read the Intermat forum since I called out how he had previously not commented about the tariffs since 2021

So my first question is why Tesla has factories in other counties.  I don’t know but wonder if it relates to tariffs that other counties impose on the US.  Germany is not cheap.

Cheaper than California...but it's 10% tariff.

Business shouldn't cost as much as it does in California or as little as it does in Texas. 50 layers of regulation or "screw it, do what feels right," and the grid goes out if it goes under 40...it's a good reason why neither side you'll usually see on Twitter is...well, right.

Automobiles make up a big chunk of the effective tariff rates I've shared.

Mexico is 20%, but that's because our Corn industry decimated theirs and....well, that's what Trump negotiated with the USMCA.

The MAIN reason though...after the Chicken Wars of the 1960s, Biden made it clear for...a long time that they'd be putting a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs.

Again, why I like TARGETED so much. It made sense for both sides, but Musk had worked out deals with China to license their FSD and he was hoping to beat BYD, NIO or...LI Auto. It was...ironically protection for primarily TSLA(but other American EVs as well).

Does Tesla export cars from China and Germany to the US.  I’m not a fan of Musk, but I thought I read that Tesla’s cars are among the most US made (although I realize that doesn’t mean all US made).

The last available data shows that half the cars produced in China were for export to other countries, mostly in Europe. Think of the balance of trade benefits for Trump when Musk starts producing everything in the US and exports them to China and Europe. Come on Elon, you spent >$250mm to get your boy elected, you are trying to buy judicial elections in Wisconsin, now is the time to re-patriate Tesla production. No more bowing to communist regimes. You know, because you are a patriot.

He's not getting into the Chinese Market now...(at least as of now, he was).

And the EU wants to find him...a lot and they're not banning lawsuits against FSD malfunctioning.

I don't see China or the US giving in here...which...again, is why it was just SO STUPID to go after Japan, South Korea and other powers in the region(who hated each other). This should have been the US going after China with the BACKING of the EU, Mexico, Canada and our Asian Partners.

Now China is just digging in.

It is even worse than that. China is gathering allies in the fight against the US. Just a few short months ago it was the opposite. China was the economic bully that other countries in the region were aligning themselves with the US to fight.

There was someone on here warning about how the BRICS currency was going to replace the dollar as the world's reserve currency. Trump's actions are making that a more realistic threat.

Oh...I know. I've...seen the Japanese, Chinese and South Korean alliance. I don't think people realize how catastrophic that could be. Just remove our influence in that entire region.

We need to be working with Japan and South Korea as top priorities.

I know people think it should be Canada, but...you're giving China the game otherwise.

And this could play directly into the plans to the dollar being replaced. It's a bit of a mixed feeling though. Green Markets give Trump more resolve...and will lead to more severe consequences. But more Red...and more instability.

So there are Chinese companies that are making electric cars just as good or better than Tesla but way less expensive, right?  Is there a consensus opinion on whether we want them available in the US?  Yes, I know we want American jobs but I think that would be overall good for the consumer if nothing else to give Tesla more competition in the US.

No, cheaper...not nearly as nice.

I would think we'd want them in the US...that was why Musk was going to bring the Model Y to market so cheap(whichever one is cheap).

It would be best for the consumer if the Toyota Hilux was available in the US.

GIVE US THE HILUX

People fixate on the Hilux...it feels like this is one of those things going around.

There are ~10 types of cars they just don't sell in the US for various reasons. Emission standards or whichever was the big SUV, the Sequoia but nicer that was meant to compete with the Escalade. I think they may have brought that back, but in the first year they offered that, they sold less than 2,000 of them...which means they lost their ass.

It's not quite the same as not being able to buy any of the Toyota vehicles. The Toyota Vehicles always have an equal...or similar version in 3 different brands. The Chinese EVs are like 15K striped down EVs with good enough batteries, but there's a big difference in the quality between them and Tesla.
