Jesse Mendez has been the best Ohio State wrestler since Kyle Snyder and is such an important piece to the Buckeye program. Dylan D'Emilio had the tournament of his life Saturday and is a guy who I believe got the most out of his career at Ohio State. Even Cannon who was seeded high had a great season and being a blood round guy was more than anyone expected going into the year. But going 0-4 in the blood round really stings. Bouzakis has shown so many flashes of greatness but has still not been able to put it together. Feldman is very injured but it's obvious this season was a pretty big disappointment. Kharchla had constant regression throughout his career and ending 0-2 was so disappointing. Paddy has regressed hard since high school. Rogotzke has showed no improvement. McCrone is a big one trick pony at 125. Recruits like Davino, Shaw and Waters are intriguing but a lot of the guys I named before were bigger recruits and haven't panned out whatsoever. Shumate had a great tourney but a lot of that was because of how the bracket fell. I am really confused on the direction of the current program and seeing Nebraska and Oklahoma State having such great tournaments made me realize very few Buckeyes are getting the most out of themselves. Is the issue Tom Ryan? Is it the coaching staff? Blaze committing to Penn State hurt but it looks like he made the right decision in hindsight. I am hoping for a better direction for this program next season.

My criticism of tOSU's talent development is largely the same as I have of Iowa:  (1) it's only hiring it's own alumni as coaches, and (2) it's allowed its RTC to lag.

Regarding the first point, you have either Tom Ryan, or guys who've gotten their college wrestling education from Tom Ryan (e.g. Jaggers, Stieber, Jordan).  I'm sure they're good coaches individually, but taken together, it's too much overlap, resulting in a one-size-fits-all approach that works for some but won't work for others. Way too many high-end recruits have been stuck in neutral for this not to be true.

Regarding the second point, the Ohio RTC consists of 4 guys, all 92kg or more (including 3 HWTs), and Moore is the only guy with a realistic shot at a U.S. world team.  I think one of the biggest keys to success is getting beat up on by guys better than you, forcing you to reach their level to compete. The RTC isn't really helping with that.

That said, I think you're underselling Davino, Shaw and Waters.  Davino is already capable of AA'ing. Waters is hilariously underrated as a recruit, and absolutely has the potential to be a 4x AA and multi-time champ. Shaw has been good a long time but jumped a level the past year.  I hope they get the coaching and practice partners they need at tOSU.

I think they need a shake up in the staff...it's hard enough to keep pace with Penn St and Iowa now Taylor at Oklahoma St makes it even harder...if everyone stays we'll be pretty solid next year...but definitely thought we'd have more that 2 AA's

This won’t happen Tom Ryan is a loyalty guy. Only change will probably be to get Sasso on staff.

I believe your right, and I do like Tom Ryan...hopefully we can have some big recruiting classes over the next couple yrs..

OSU has had possibly the best recruiting classes in the last 10-15yrs.

When Ryan goes it will be Jaggers. There will be no change...:classic_dry: Sasso is not what OSU needs as an assistant...

There is nothing confusing about it really. Paddy doesn't have it. Kharch is done. It's time for Kilkeary. Davino is going to get his chance. Bouzakis is comparable to Paddy at this point.  Hepner and Geog are done. Shumate had an up year. Feldman can't get bigger or faster, he's stuck. D'Emilio had a nice career and will be missed. Hopefully Welsh doesn't, "up and split" to OKST. Cannon was great at the end of the season.

Looking forward to the new guys and hopefully Kilkeary, Davino, Welsh, Birden, Cannon...

Fifth place with what OSU had doesn't seem to terrible, but I believe they've looked pretty stale for some time.

I also fully agree with the little effort OTC is making. Why even have it...

It's clear what the secret sauce was at Ohio State, given Nebraska's rise and Ohio State's decline.

You say Tervel I'm inclined to say Roselli...

Imagine if Ryan stepped down and they hired Spencer Lee to replace him…

Yeah I'm sure what they need is a 26 year old who's still obsessed with Pokemon and childhood cartoons and throws his medals in the trash when he loses

Ryan is 55 years old. Last year the other OSU forced out John Smith at age 59 and he hadn't had a really good team in some years.  Wrestling was different back when those guys wrestled and guys don't have as much energy when they hit late middle age either, naturally Ryan's results are starting to suffer.

They recruit very well though.  Is that his doing or the doing of others?  If its him that is influencing the recruiting success and he is interested in supporting the team in a role that steps back responsibilities, maybe they can accommodate that while promoting another fresh face to head coach.  I'm not advocating for this but just brainstorming

He completely bombed at Oklahoma. I think he's overrated.

Some are great at handling certain aspects of a program.  Maybe he wasn't meant to be the overarching generalist.

There are a lot of aspects to being a successful wrestling coach beyond just expertise on the mat. Ryan might be a great fundraiser and a good guy at managing his assistant coaches who are doing the mat work with the kids. I'm not criticizing the guy, I'm just speculating on why his results may be dropping. Maybe he'll buck the trend and come back with a vengeance.

I'm okay with that.

I think maybe he's a pretty good coach at teaching technique but terrible at other important aspects of coaching. Maybe he needs a strong HC to get the best results out of him. Not everybody is meant to be a HC.

When Tom decides to go, I believe it's going to be very difficult for OSU to be anything other than OSU with the coaching staff at present...
