Father of 3-time state wrestling champ led away in handcuffs after brawl at state tourney

https://www.shorenewsnetwork.com/2025/02/24/massive-brawl-erupts-at-new-jersey-high-school-wrestling-match-father-of-star-wrestler-taken-out-in-cuffs/#

Video shows students rushing into the stands, though it’s unclear the extent of their involvement in the incident.

By NJSIAA rules, “any player that leaves the bench area during an altercation, regardless of whether the player engages in the altercation, shall be disqualified,” meaning any wrestler identified in the brawl would be DQ’d for the rest of the season.

It’s unclear whether Knox, the star wrestler, was involved in the melee. Knox is heavily favored to become N.J.‘s fifth four-time state champion, if he were to win in Atlantic City in two weeks.

My understanding is that there's a video clearly showing the kid going into the stands and throwing punches. The punches would be irrelevant to the NJSIAA decision (but not to the police). However, I believe other kids also went up there. Likely, if one dqed, all that can be identified would also be.

Some dude wearing a white wifebeater in the middle of winter rushes into the stands...  Tell me a Jersey story wthout telling me its a Jersey story.

Seriously, its awful if Knox is done.  Shame on the adults there.

Knox is now listed as the #1 seed in the Region 7 state bracket at 126, so not likely he was DQed.  All of the SJV wrestlers who qualified out of District 25 are also listed in the Region 7 brackets.

I have no inside info but the brackets were drawn today by people simply looking at results. The decision is simple. He left the playing area. Now the lawyers are involved so we'll see if that changes anything. But as of now no final answer given. If they stick with it, they just move people up the seeding ladder.

Short of continually updating the brackets that I see here (https://highschoolsports.nj.com/wrestling/brackets/season/2024-2025/9958), how does one find out the "final answer?"

How did those people draw the brackets simply by looking at results?  Was this like people here who guess at who will be seeded where based on past results?  Seems like a lot of work.

Not sure what you're asking. They draw brackets by looking at district results and possibly adding in results from previous years. I haven't been involved with the NJSIAA for a while and I know they've changed seeding procedures a few times. Used to be at states they'd take all the region champs and seed them based on previous year placements, if any and then place the lower placers accordingly.

By the final answer, I mean whatever the NJSIAA and the courts rule.

Just in (news to me).  A very bad look, indeed.

Eyewitness video has emerged showing St. John Vianney High wrestling star Anthony Knox sprinting into the bleachers to engage in a wild brawl during the District 25 tournament Saturday, placing his path to winning a historic fourth state championship next month in serious jeopardy.

The eyewitness video evidence — observed across several social media sites — appears to show Knox dashing into the stands at Collingswood High School after his father, Anthony Knox Sr., first marched into the bleachers to engage with fans. From there, video shows the younger Knox appearing to throw punches in the stands, and a separate video depicts Knox being led away by police in handcuffs.

I'll look again but I had trouble seeing young Anthony in the fray. I don't dispute it since others saw him. About the father, if I saw correctly, it looked like Sr walked across in front of the far-side (from the camera's point of view and not a Gary Larson strip) bleachers to engage the crowd. Some of us talking at an event Sunday figured he was near the anti-SJV antagonists but it looks like he had time to think things through.

I was told earlier that the rule was simply leaving the area but the one video showed that it was worded during an altercation and took part. Which means that the punches do matter to the NJSIAA. This makes more sense overall. Otherwise kids running into the stands to hug their parents could be subject to dq.

what did he do?

IDK but I don't buy the story, which as I understand it is "A guy was in the stands saying racist things and insulting my son so I politely asked him to stop and he punched me."

"Half measures are a coward's form of insanity."
