States or State?

We go to the state championship . Only 1 Cham in Indiana , per weight. All are state champs. 
I guess if you have several champs at any weight class, then you go to states.

That's not relevant.  It's the nomenclature that is tied to the shortened nickname of the various tournaments.  States is short for the State Wrestling Championships just like Nationals or NCAAs is short for the National Wrestling Championships, and Districts, Regionals, etc. They all work the same. How many classifications or any of that nonsense has no bearing.  It seems odd that it's almost universally accepted to use Nationals, Worlds, NCAAs, Olympics, etc., but for some reason it doesn't make sense for people in certain states around the country to call their respective State Wrestling Tournament "States".

That's how language works. English isn't consistent and logical all the time. Olympics actually doesn't fit with the others. Native English speakers wouldn't say "I won Olympics". They would say "I won THE Olympics." State vs. states is clearly a regional difference and that's fine.

As long as you realize and admit that the folks that say “State” are being oddly inconsistent and by all accounts, they are wrong.

When someone says “ I am/was a state champ, National Champ or Olympic Champ”, there is no S on the end. State is the correct term.

If you will refer to any of the other tournaments in their shortened name (National Championships to Nationals or NCAAs, or Regional Championships to Regionals or Regions, District Championships to Districts, etc.) but you think "States" is wrong when referring to the State Championships, then you are being very inconsistent in your thought process.

 

Of course you call the wrestler the State Champion, and you can certainly call the tournament the State Tournament or State Championships, that is not the debate here.

That's irrelevant to the debate.  Do you ever refer to other tournaments as Nationals, or Regionals or NCAAs or the Olympics?  Of course no one is referring to said wrestler as the "States" Champ, just like no one calls so and so the Nationals Champ, or Districts Champ, etc.

It's state. And I realize it's inconsistent with other college tournaments......Big 10's, NCAA's...........

I started wrestling in 1969. Our goals were to make it to "states". Regardless of plural or possessive, good or bad grammar that was the way we spoke of it. Maybe it was the combined district/region/state tournaments or perhaps Western PA jargon. OK yinz jagoffs !

St. Edward's wrestling program is easily the most successful in the state of Ohio, and consistently one of the top programs in the nation.  Located in Lakewood, Ohio it is officially in the Eastern Time Zone.  States=Success

Well sure if folks were saying "I won the state's wrestling tournament" but they're not.  They are saying "I won states" like its both Kentucky and Tennessee.
