I have no experience with swimming and diving, but does anyone know if that sport has had similar discussions regarding the official uniform?

@Wrestleknownothing ?

I know it’s not uncommon to see comments in the mainstream making fun of speedos, so I would assume so.  And as someone like most people that never watches swimming outside of the Olympics, I feel like for men it has been more common in recent years in swimming at least for guys to do the longer shorts as opposed to the bikini bottoms or whatever the official name is.  Divers seem to stick to the bikini bottoms though IIRC.

The change has to do with hydro dynamics rather than modesty. If you recall, several years back swimming went to full body suits with high tech fabrics and world records dropped at a rapid pace. There was push back on the suits, rule changes, and what you see now is the compromise.

I feel the Gable would've teched Kueter in 1:30 had he been wearing a new high speed aero two piece.
