Is Greg Diakomihalis out for the season or is he just out temporarily?  He hasn't wrestled a match since November 24th.

Brett Ungar hasn't wrestled since December 6th.  Is he coming back?  Staying 33 or going back down?

In their absence, Milani and Ferrera have done very well.  So maybe they are taking their time getting back to form, knowing that the team will not suffer in the meantime.  I'm just wondering if anyone knows the plan.

I wondered this same thing today.  Took a peek at the Cornell forum and I believe the consensus was Greg’s injury has him out for the year and Ungar will be back at 125

Greg D is out for the season.  Ungar was supposed to be at the Cyclone Open after descending to 125, but I don't know if he didn't make the trip or didn't make the weight.  Perhaps Coach Grey will give more info in his weekly email update in a day or two.

The plan (until this weekend) was for Ungar to descend to and remain at 125 this year, and for Ferrera to stay at 133 for the remainder of the season.

Did I mention that Ferrera was injured in his second match this weekend (after winning his first over Intermat #20 and ESPN expert Cory Land), and MFFd the following match?  No idea what will occur going forward.

Thanks for the info.  Sorry to hear about Greg D.  Hope he heals up and gives it another go next year.  Ungar could make some noise in a wide open 125

I believe Greg would need to transfer and get a medical shirt if he wants to wrestle next year.

Is there something other than graduating that prevents him from returning to Cornell next year?

Also the amount of time he’s been enrolled, right?

Well, he matriculated the year after Foca and Ramirez, and he took a "medical redshirt" which just means he wasn't enrolled (I guess), so it's possible he still has time.  "Four in six" is the rule now, although that may have just been a COVID-year allowance.

Clear as mud.

He didn’t wrestle any matches one season, but I’m not sure if he wasn’t enrolled.  It shows as a season on wrestlestat, unlike Yianni for example who showed as Spartan Combat for the years he wasn’t enrolled.

Could be wrong but isn’t there something about only being enrolled for 8 total semesters?  He still shows on the roster now, so would think if he knew he was done for the year and was saving semesters he would have unenrolled from this semester.  He’s also listed as a senior, so to your original point maybe this is all moot and he is graduating.

Ivy student athletes are now allowed 4 years of eligibility within a consecutive 5 year span.  On the other hand, they are required to complete their degree in 4 academic years. Consequently, the athlete cannot enroll and attend classes as it keeps that academic clock runner.  This is essentially why you'll see eligible Ivy graduates doing their 5th year at a non-Ivy university.

Do you know if Greg was enrolled the whole time?

Cornell has an annual Giving Day, in which team members call up previous and prospective donors and ask for donations.  This year, I got Ethan Fernandez, but the Site Administrator for the Cornell wrestling forum got Greg 😧

I spoke with Greg D. Very nice kid. As most are aware, he is out for the season, but fortunately he will be back next year.

For what it is worth.

Interesting.  Looks like former themat poster klehner has been lurking here

That thread did include this snippet - apparently the Ivy does allow medical hardship years even if you remain enrolled:

If you are enrolled at Cornell and medically able to participate during your season, you are considered to have used a season of eligibility regardless of whether you compete. In limited circumstances (i.e., medical hardships, leaves of absences) there are exceptions to this rule.

The ranking services just can't quit him.

Intermat still has him ranked #17 and WrestleStat has him all the way up at #5. Only Flo seems to have gotten the memo.

Pretty sure that Cornell hasn’t put out a press release on Greg.  Quick question:  who has wrestled more recently:  Greg Diakomihalis or Jacori Teemer?

Why do I get the feeling you already know the answer to your question?

Perhaps because you know more than nothing?
