Jury finds CNN defamed Navy veteran with segment on Afghan refugees

A jury in Florida on Friday found that CNN defamed a Navy veteran with a report on his business that aired in 2021 and awarded him $5 million damages.

Punitive damages will be decided by later today the rest of the article says.    Oh but wait!!!!

(Reuters) -CNN reached a settlement on Friday with a U.S. Navy veteran who helped evacuate people from Afghanistan after the U.S. military withdrew from the country in 2021, a judge said on Friday, hours after a jury found the TV news outlet liable for defaming him.

The six-person jury decided CNN had to pay damages totaling $5 million. The settlement will avert a second phase of the trial that would have determined any punitive damages.

CNN cried UNCLE.   I was not aware that a settlement could be reached after a jury verdict is reached.   CNN was in a very bad place if they went this route.   They screwed up.   They thought they were able to do and say whatever they wanted.   And they were wrong.   This shoudl be a huge cudgel to other "news" entities to be truthful and not opinionated.

This is really great news for the people.   CNN defamed a guy and are paying millions as a result.   This guy is going to get 5 million in compensatory damages and untold tens of millions for punitive measures.  I'm guessing CNN and the rest of the alphabet soup MSM will watch their P's and Q's from now on.

I doubt it.  $5M doesn't seem like much for this industry.  We've currently got some movie actors suing each other firth for ~half a billion just for what went on behind the set.
