This is not true.  This is another thread of your's trying in any way shape or form to shit on Penn State again.  Plenty of athletes verbally commit and still take visits to other schools prior to signing.  You're just making shit up.  A verbal commitment is nothing more than saying, "hey i right now I'm vibing with this school."

WHAT IS A VERBAL COMMITMENT?

A verbal commitment is when your student-athlete verbally agrees to attend a school before they sign (or are able to sign) a National Letter of Intent (NLI). Recruits can make a verbal commitment at any time. When a student-athletes makes a verbal commitment, it serves as a signal to other college coaches to stop recruiting them.

Disagree.  The ethical duties and code of morality you sugguest are hard to reconcile with ethics and lawful right to harvest and maximize individial NIL opportunities/rights.  Athletes having the freedom to profit from their own NIL - this has its own ethics as well as legal protections.  These rights tend to Trump NCAA rules and the NCAA recruiting code of the hills you urge as "moral standards."   Not much moral to me from the old system where the schools got all of the benefits and Athlete4s essentially lost their own NIL opportunities.

I stopped reading when you mentioned NIL.  NIL did not exist during Yianni or Nolf's careers.

You are absolutely 100% wrong, but "DEFEND CAEL NO MATTER WHAT!"

You are wrong and your ego is in the way of clear thinking.

NIL existed back then but the NCAA rules (that unlawfully and unethically) prevented athletes from profiting from their own names, images, amnd likenesses.  No defensible analysis of the morality of recruiting parctices and culture from that era can ignore this sad reality from the past.   Universities and their governing body were oppressing the athletes and essentially misappropriating the individual athlete's rights to monetize their own individual name, image, and likeness.

Ego? No... I didn't have time to read about NIL when it didn't exist.  You think Nolf and Yianni received NIL?

I have an acquaintance that was a four year starter at a D1 blue blood.  No NIL.  His "scholarship" was "books."

It didn’t exist during Yianni’s recruitment, but it did exist during his last 2 seasons.  Started 7/1/21 I believe, although I believe were some funky state laws at first.

Yes, sounds about right.  He probably signed with Spartan early on?

Thought Nolf's (brief) story about his recruitment process was interesting to share. Basically makes it sound like it was a random decision he made after getting fed up with the process. Makes Nolf seem like the Anti-Bassett lol

This was good.  I like Nolf interviews.  I alluded to this earlier in the thread.  I can't believe schools laid off of him bc they thought he was committed to Cornell! Can you imagine?!!!

I love interviews with Jody Strittmatter.  He probably brings up Nolf and Spencer Lee the most, and it is clear that he loves those two.  I think he also has similar feelings toward Bo Bassett.

Yianni is from a different era.

Kids get paid nowadays, this is change your life money for many of these kids, and will completely overhaul the old narrative for what it meant to be a college athlete (broken and retired coaching at a high school because your dreams didn't pan out.)

Now it can be independent small landlord and entrepreneur...that's an amazing shift.

Go pursue the kids coaches, do your thing!

how many college wrestlers do you think get paid? a percentage is fine.

Reading this thread will have you believing Sacred Heart's third stringer is getting a full ride plus $350, 000 per year.

Exactly. I would guess there are about 20 wrestlers getting more than 1-2K a year off of NIL at the D1 level.

The team dissension has to be huge when someone new gets lured in with rumors of 6 figure payouts, and other guys already on the team with similar records are getting books and a fraction of a scholly.

Pure speculation but I think it’s more than that.

If the cutoff is $2k and we’re including redshirts, I’d guess:

Penn State: 10-12

Iowa: 9 or 10

Oklahoma State 5

Ohio State 4 or 5

Michigan 3 or 4

Iowa State 3 or 4

Nebraska 3

Cornell 3

Virginia Tech 3

Arizona State: 2 or 3

Rutgers: 2

Virginia Tech 2

Lehigh 2

Little Rock 2

Illinois 2

SDSU 2

West Virginia 1 or 2

Northern Iowa 1

Northern Colorado 1

North Carolina 1

Lock Haven 1

Purdue 1

Ohio 1

Wyoming 1

So something like 65-70, IMO.  But about 30% of them coming from two schools

The team:school are not really paying out nil contracts are they?    It’s not a function of the school like a scholly…. They have to negotiate outside of that.   They are paid by outside third parties / businesses etc.

But there would be a certain amount of collaboration with the coaching staff as to who gets offers, whether they publicly admit it or not.

So if this was a regular practice for Cael (which he looks to have passed on to DT), maybe he did it more with Ivy guys since they could never officially be “committed”?

I'm kind of surprised that no one seems to remember that Cornell's current head coach was a Lehigh recruit until a few days before he enrolled at Cornell.

I'd say that is a bit high, but even then it is less than 2.5% of college wrestlers.
