I think today's results sealed the US team title tbh. For both Russia and Iran this is practically impossible to recover from. There is still Spencer Lee, Marcus Blaze, Levi Haines, Kyle Dake and Trent Hidlay to wrestle. Very big reality check for Iran freestyle. We are getting rinsed LA Olympics if this continues for the whole tournament.

We'll have to wait till tomorrow.

Both Snyder and Bo has tough final matches. Plus Yazdani Is favored to beat Thazudinov for bronze and Amouzad should beat Shamil. That's 30 points.

Two key matches tomorrow will be decisive first Javan vs blaze expected to wrestle each other in the second round .

And Ghasempoor vs Dake in quarter finals .

Levi Haines can't face Nokhodi till the final and khaniev is on Haines side of the bracket

Hidlay will wrestle firouzpour in semis and this match is even I believe.

Far from it, I think.  Iran and Russia will probably both get a 3rd and a 5th for their repechage guys tomorrow.  They can both easily recover from that with great wrestling from the other 8.  I would have favored Russia to get gold at 97 and Iran to get gold at 65 but both guys should get 3rd.  Those points will help.

If Armenia hadn't made the finals at 65, it would have been a real disaster for Iran

just watched the end of the Amouz match...

just an awful call and very surprised it was upheld after them looking at it forever...

shocking...

Yaz and Yoshida was a great match and legit win, but, very tough loss...

Tevanyan didn't even attack from the start of the match it was Amouzad initiating. The first shot clock shouldn't have even went on Amouzad in the first place. One thing I'm concerned about it is the weight cut. It seems like Amouzad has grown out of 65. The weight cut has also worsened his gas tank a lot. He isn't as aggressive which hurt him in this match especially.

After the match dorostkar was very angry at Amouzad saying I told you to stay in the middle , don't back up plus he was convinced That the Ref and judges want Iranians to lose.

Iran's best chance was 65 in terms of gold and Yazdani could've made the finals on paper. Iran's team is very poorly conditioned this year. Unless they bounce back today the US is winning by a landslide. Russia's 57, 74 and 125 reps are not great and will probably DNP this year. They need to rely on Uguev, Ibragimov, Khaniev and Kadiev to get to the final but it won't be easy at all. The Russian team like Iran have poor conditioning and will gas out if the match gets close. I can see Uguev and Ibragimov making finals tbh. Kadiev and Khaniev have very bad draws stylistically.

Yazdani and Amouzad are not favoured against Mamedov and Tazhudinov. Not by a long shot. Both matches are going to be incredibly tough and those two need to give everything they have to win them. Javan is getting teched by Blaze and Ghasempour might not even get to the quarters. The US sending 2 to the final on day 1 more or less seals the title for them. They have good draws at 57, 61, 79 and 92 where they have very very good wrestlers. US is going to do an Iran greco on the freestyle field.

Is winning the team title that important for Iranians?

And do you believe Amouzad chances at gold was higher than Zare and Nokhodi specially after the terrible draw he's gotten?

he was circling in my mind...

it was not an egregious flee by any stretch of the imagination...

the only thing i will say is when your entire goal is to win a match 2-1 then you are in danger of leaving it in the officials hands...

but truly an awful call...

Yes that call was stupid and tevanyan was headbutting Amouzad and the ref did nothing.

Yes winning the team title is incredibly important especially now that Russia's results count at worlds. Amouzad was the reigning world champ and he had already beaten all of those wrestlers on his side. So you would expect him to win if his body was in shape. His draw wasn't as bad compared to 86 for example. 125 is nowhere near as competitive as the other weights so you can't compare Zare's situation to Amouzad. Nokhodi is also not the favourite against Haines and Khaniev so his chance of winning gold is less than Amouzad and Zare too irrespective of the draw.

I don't know if this is true but I read that in the last 20 years no champ repeated the next year at 65 Kg.  Amouzad is a great wrestler and was the favorite to win gold but again 65 Kg is deep you have like 5 guys who could all beat each other.

I checked the odds yesterday Nokhodi is a slight favorite to win gold .

I think you got it right. There was only 15 seconds of wrestling in the whole 6 minutes. During the break when Dorostkar tells him how to get his under hook. He comes out and wrestles gets it and gets the step out.   Maybe got one and a half under hooks after that. At 20 seconds Amouzad gets rocked back but Tev is hesitant and Amouzad circles wide to center. Then circles at like 12 second mark both times ref warns him.  Then it’s stopped with 4 seconds with head contact. Both sides equally to blame for all head contact. That’s when that thick ref calls the others. He’s adamant about the back up and circle.  I think he had his red card up. Because after each reff confirms no call he puts the white card on mat. He definitely influenced the call at the end of the match.  I think warnings were Ok I think the awarded point was unreasonable.  I just ask my self why didn’t Amouzad wrestle. Looked like they wanted a decision without expending energy.  Horrible match and terrible call.

I think Amouzad was gassed tbh. He didn't have enough energy to wrestle with Tevanyan aggressively and it bit him. I don't think Tevanyan's strategy is going to work again though if they wrestle again but I think Amouzad is going to move up a weight class imo.

Yazdani looks clanky. The analogy that is coming to my mind is something like one of those old timey steam powered cars.

more than a year layoff after the surgery and moving from 86 to 97 I think he did pretty well ,came very close to beat one of the best guys at 97 , Also beat azarpira twice to make the team.

The problem is size though , at 97 he won't underhook the top guys and score pushouts .  shouldv'e moved to 92 kg before 97.

Let's see how he do against Thazudinov so we can have a better assessment.

Yazdani will be 32 soon , he will be there for 3 more years maybe . Assuming he can qualify over Azarpira who's very tough and 7 years younger !
