if he had chosen leg grabbing he would be doing the same things to everyone at 65-70...

he is truly a generational talent...

max's first ever world level match was against Esmaeili in 2020 U20... it was obvious he was different...

max drew Gomi on the backside the next day...

He is a generational talent definitely but you know who could give him problems. I think 2020 Reza geraei could beat him honestly.

And forget the two matches they had in Olympic team trials in 2024 because gearei was already on the decline and couldn't wrestle 6 minutes

Here's my prediction for freestyle 57kg.

there's no big favorite at 57 but it's time for spencer lee to win gold at senior world .

Other contenders:

Han

Ogawa

Roman bravo

Valizadeh (need a favorable draw)

I'm rooting for Han to win but I think Spencer will beat him in the semi or final and win gold

Freestyle 61 KG .

Can blaze or Javan beat the great Uguev

Zaur experience will be the difference .

Uguev will repeat in for me the easiest weight to pick a favorite.

Freestyle 65 KG

Very stacked weight and hard to pick a winner.

Let's start with the Contenders whom I'm believe all have a chance to win gold

Amouzad

Sujeet

Abbasghadzi Magomedov

Shamil Mamedov

Basset

Tevanyan

I think it will be between Amouzad , Shamil and Abbasghadzi magomedov. Hopefully Amouzad have a smooth cut and won't have endurance problems in the second period .

Shamil almost teched Amouzad a few month back before running out of gas and lose.

magomedov returning at 65 with superior technique so I'll go.

Gold : Abbasghadzi Magomedov

Silver : Shamil Mamedov

Bronze : Basset , amouzad

I actually remember that match happening. Agree it was obvious back then that Esmaeili could be special. Didn’t know about Gomi though. Now that’s a bad draw lol.

I wasn't inferring anything

Just that although Esmaeili is p4p best wrestler in the world it's never gonna be easy for him when he face jafarov .

Yes true, they are well matched since Jafarov’s parterre defence is very well. But Jafarov has never scored any technical points against Esmaeili in three matches. That’s pretty bad news for him.

Sourian success must be a huge factor popularizing Greco more in Iran.

I think them winning a lot popularized Greco. Maybe Sourian did convince them to invest in greco at the grassroots.

Also this thread has been maintained by a small cohort of dedicated overseas Iranians over the years. A half dozen people maybe. So a tiny group on an obscure internet forum. Some of them have stopped posting recently. I haven't seen Irani post in a while or that Shiraz guy. I remember this thread being pretty dead at the last Olympics games, even during the MFS portion, compared to what it would get in the past.

So you're seeing less chatting because 3/6 dedicated posters are inactive.

Hadi Saravi has now won 7 world/Olympic medals. Unless I am missing someone, that’s the joint highest for any Iranian Greco wrestler along with Hamid Sourian (although Sourian won 7 golds…)

That puts Saravi as joint #1 Iranian GR wrestler of all time in number of medals and #2 overall

Does Gogi still have the job? I had to do a double take, but Roman Vlasov in 2021 is the last Russian rep to win a world championship. Granted, Russia was banned many of the following years. Still, a second year in a row with no world champs, it's a program in in turmoil.  60, 130, 67, 77, just so many weights where they would need a mini miracle.

Esmaeli passed the test and won a razor thin match that all great light and middleweights face. If he keeps winning, I'm sure he will face many more in the years to come.

I think interest in greco is dying in Russia. A lot of their greco talent historically has come from former Soviet Union countries (Georgia, Armenia etc). Now that these countries are independent their talent pool is far smaller. They still have guys like Zakriev, Iliasov, Komarov's brother who are promising guys at junior levels but it will be very hard for them to bounce back. Especially with how strong Iran and Azerbaijan are nowadays.

my opinion after this tourney is that 67kg is now the toughest weight top to bottom on the planet...

I think 87 and 60 are also very strong weights in greco. 87 I think is pretty underrated tbh. There wasn't Bisultanov and Taizo Yoshida and still there was Cengiz (World champ), Novikov (Olympic champ), Komarov (World champ), Mohmedi (Olympic and World Silver), Filchakov (World Bronze), Islam Abasov (multi time European medalist), Tamas Levai (World Bronze) and Gobadze (World Gold). 67 I think is the most volatile but 87 is as good on paper.

Geraei was a big family favorite then...

I was watching some old clips of the Geraei brothers a couple days ago and realised just how good they both were in their primes. Genuine magicians the both of them. I don't know how people can look at them and call greco boring. I don't think Iran currently has guys as technical as them apart from Esmaeili maybe. Even then the stuff they were doing I haven't seen Esmaeili do in this tournament.

I would argue Jafarov vs Esmaeili is a clash of the best wrestler of two different rule sets. Jafarov being the best wrestler in the world of the old rules and Esmaeili in the current. The old rules imo favoured strong par terre whilst the current rules favour neutral a lot more. Jafarov is better in par terre whilst Esmaeili is better in neutral. Until Jafarov can be more offensive in neutral he won't be able to beat Esmaeili. I think UWW will keep the current rule set as its encouraged more activity in the first period. Of course it is a detriment to certain wrestlers who shaped their style completely to the older rule set.

Iran's greco took off after Rangraz won gold in 2001. After that there was the Abdevali's, Sourian and obviously London 2012 which made greco explode in popularity. It's interesting as greco is largely concentrated amongst 2 provinces (Khuzestan and Fars) and one city in Mazandaran (Amol). But the major success and investment now is largely due to the money being spent by Dabir building facilities and paying wrestlers for winning world and olympic medals. I think the guys that medal will all receive an upfront cash payment and then subsequent monthly payments per month for a year. This means they can fully focus on wrestling.

I don't know how Amol gave us Ghasem Rezaei and then Hadi Saravi 10 years later. Some of these places are freakish in terms of their talent production. They also gave us Zare, Hedayati, Oskou and Rahmani.

Mohmedi losing again in a 4th straight final is heart breaking. It seems like he can't get to the next step for some reason. This also means Izeh will have to wait another year for their first world champion.
