nothing egregious sticks out in my mind, but, i don't tend to whine too much about the refs...

the only really bad reffing i have seen was the lady in the Benji vs Goriaev match and it was fairly clear she had an agenda against russia, but, just couldn't make it happen...

Greetings guy. I am just at awe with the depth of everyone's knowledge in wrestling. I follow Iran's wrestling, being from Iran, at a high level. But the type of information you guys share in this forum is super amazing. I have commented in different sports forums and most of the times the level of discussion is trash talking and no technical points are ever exchanged. I just want to say that you guys are super amazing and super knowledgeable about the sport. This goes to both the Iranian and non Iranian commenters.

Russian greco ends the tournament without a single gold medal for the second worlds in a row. Their only other medal hope is Sergey Emelin or else they will finish with 1 medal...

In other news Iran wins two more world golds and sends another 2 to the final. Incredible performance from our team. Insane how big the fall off has been for Russia. Credit to Azerbaijan they have been very tough competitors the last few years. They were unlucky with the Ganizade injury or else they could have won another medal at 72.

Apart from Keshtkar who was just bad I think everyone else was pretty good for the most part. Saravi is my biggest concern. I don't know why he is so poor in par terre. It cost him against Sargsian and was close to giving him problems against Sweden. If he wants to win gold in LA he needs to drastically improve his par terre offence. I think the real test for this Iran team is next years' worlds as that would be when many of the top wrestlers will be competing. Some of the olympic weight classes were missing some guys. Especially at 60 (Fumita and Sharshenbekov), 77 (Kusaka, Zhedrayev, Makhmudov), 87 (Bisultanov) and 97 (Rosillo). Would it have made too big of a difference, I'm not sure since Cuba's guys have been poor and Makhmudov hasn't looked like a top contender in a while.

Does Gogi still have the job? I had to do a double take, but Roman Vlasov in 2021 is the last Russian rep to win a world championship. Granted, Russia was banned many of the following years. Still, a second year in a row with no world champs, it's a program in in turmoil.  60, 130, 67, 77, just so many weights where they would need a mini miracle.

Esmaeli passed the test and won a razor thin match that all great light and middleweights face. If he keeps winning, I'm sure he will face many more in the years to come.

Congrats to Iran for winning the Greco team title with 4 Golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze.

Medaling at 9 out of the 10 weights . That's an incredible achievement.

Saeid Esmaeili is pound for pound best wrestler in the world right now regardless of style. The question is tho can he surpass Hamid sourian ?

Jafarov I feel like he's good enough to keep it close with Esmaeili.

he keeps it close every match, but, Esmaeili has won everyone while tech smashing everyone else...

Sabaz just beat Jafarov for bronze...

Jafarov should still be considered #2 at 67, but, it is very clear Esmaeili is just the best wrestler on this planet...

Jafarov was leading 3*3  at the Islamic games last year with only 10 seconds left before saeid score a four point and win the match .  This world 1*1  Wouldv'e gone jafarov way by the old scoring the last passivity criteria.

i am aware...

i have loved Jafarov since he was wrestling U20s in early 2020's...

i still think Esmaeili is just better...

Jafarov a clear #2 at 67...

P4P discussions i do not think it is close...

i will watch either one every match i can...

Considering how stacked 67 kg is  ismaeli make it look easy against everyone except jafarov.

One more thing it seem to me that Iranians in this chat don't care that much about Greco wrestling.

Like Americans they prefer leg grabbers

they are at least aware and do not make it a point to talk down to greco...

no one can be faulted for personal preference...

The greats win when they have to, and that’s what Esmaeili does.

if the rules were different, Esmaeili would wrestle differently too…

Iran is not a traditional greco power. They are a traditional freestyle power. They have been a top team internationally since the 50s.

Greco was dominated by Europe in the 20th century. First by the nordic/germanic countries and then later by the European eastern bloc. Iran didn't become a top greco nation until about the 2010s. Sourian was a canary in the coal mine in the 00s, a bit earlier.

This forum also skews middle aged to older. I'm guessing the posters here grew up hearing from their fathers and grandfathers about the freestyle national heroes from the 50s and 60s winning olympic medals or world titles.

As to why it was freestyle from the start. I don't know. Maybe Iran had a popular folkstyle that managed to survive longer than the rest of the world, and it was similar to freestyle so that's the international one that was picked.

if he had chosen leg grabbing he would be doing the same things to everyone at 65-70...

he is truly a generational talent...

max's first ever world level match was against Esmaeili in 2020 U20... it was obvious he was different...

max drew Gomi on the backside the next day...

I wasn't inferring anything

Just that although Esmaeili is p4p best wrestler in the world it's never gonna be easy for him when he face jafarov .

Sourian success must be a huge factor popularizing Greco more in Iran.
