I think Geraei has transitioned to BJJ. I think Abolfazl Mohmedi and Reza Azarshab are decent wrestlers at 82. At 72 I think we have Ahmadreza Mohsennejad who was quite promising at junior levels but has since stagnated a bit. He might develop in the next couple of years if given time. I'm trying to think of anyone else in particular but I feel like if both of them permanently move up it will make our team much worse.

I like Farokhi but I can't see him beating Mohmadi. 87kg is very deep and Mohmadi is one of the best in that division and also young. Maybe Farokhi can prove me wrong, he's certainly motivated to make the Olympic team and could improve with more time at 87kg. Excited to see him at the Asian Games.

Yeah greco I feel like is much more deeper at its olympic weights from 60-97 than freestyle is. Its honestly hard to say whether Farokhi can wrestle at 87 the way he does at 82. He will probably struggle to control centre against Mohmedi and might not be able to gas him out. Mohmedi I think is better par terre than him. Asian games will be the litmus test if he can beat Zhanysov then there is a good chance he can be a contender at 87, if not then he should probably stay at 82. He could be like Azizli and dominate the weight class for years.

Asian Games wrestling starts tomorrow.  The level of competition is very high in most weights.

57 - Momeni has an easy path to SF where he will face Aman, Abdullaev, or Ogawa. DNP

65 - Ebrahimzadeh faces Sujeet in the QF and also has Kiyooka on his half of the bracket. DNP

74 - Emami has Jamalov in the first round and also has Tulga and Kaipanov on his bracket. Bronze

86 - Nokhodi will have to beat Shavaev or Saipudinov to reach the final. Gold

97 - Azarpira will face Yoshida or Aitmukhan in the SF. Bronze

125 - Zare might face the phenom Kassimbek in the SF then Sharipov again in the final. GOLD

GR:

60 - Abbaspour has Ganiev in SF. Bronze

67 - Rezaei has Shermakhanbet in the first round (Kazakh who always beat Reza Geraei) then likely Sogabe in SF. DNP

77 - Abdevali will likely face Badaghi in SF then Makhmudov/Kusaka in final. Silver

87 - Farokhi will likely rematch Zhanyshov in the SF then face Taizo Yoshida in the final. Gold

97 - Bali should do well in a weak 97 field. Gold

130 - Mirzazadeh. GOLD

Some of these brackets are brutal. 65 FS, 97 FS, 77 GR and 87 GR have everyone on one side. The winner of Mahmudov and Kusaka faces Dzrayev the next round actually wild. Similar thing happens with Ebrahimzadeh, if he beats Sujeet he wrestles Kiyooka next round.

Day 1 of Asian games has went more or less how I predicted. 67 Rezaei lost to the Kazakh who lost to Sogabe who is really good. The other side of that bracket had Beishkeev and Khalmakhanov who are both really talented young guys and Khalmakhanov beat Beishkeev and got to the final. 87 Farokhi lost to Kazakh guy who is a Russian transfer who then lost to Zhanyshov who I really rate. In fairness to Farokhi the referring was bizarre they took away a step out point for no reason and gave the second passivity call to Kazakh literally 10 or 15s after Farokhi got a takedown and was controlling centre. He would've lost to Zhanyshov anyways. Mirzazadeh got to the final but he didn't look too good imo. His final is later today against Uzbekistan. This more or less should seal the Farokhi to 87 argument. Unless he wants to not make a world team he should stay at 82. 67 and 87 are very deep weight classes internationally but especially in Asia. There are like 3-4 really good guys who could all be senior medal threats at worlds this year. Overall not too concerned as Worlds and Olympics is where it matters.

Useful reality check for Farokhi

but he has the Olympic rings tattooed on his arm, he’s not going to give up on 87 yet

Mirzazadeh looks fine to me, he’s a 1-1 specialist

He needs to bulk up then he looked small at 87 and really struggled to get anything going. He was weighing around 86kg apparently. I still think he can become a solid 87 but that would mean our team would be much weaker as a result.

Nao Kusaka beat Makhmudov and Zharayev which means we will potentially get a rematch of the Olympic semi finals for the bronze medal match at 77. Abdevali vs Badaghi in the other semi finals. If Abdevali wins he will have a very tough time against Kusaka. Taizo Yoshida is also really good and I think will be a gold medal threat this year.

I have Nokhodi, Azarpira, and Zare getting gold. I have Emani bronze

Abdevali beat Kusaka for gold an incredible result for him. Makes the selection for 77 very interesting for next year and selection for 2028 olympics. Hopefully Oskou can do the same at worlds and win gold too.

Yoshida beat Azarpira quite easily the last time they wrestled, Azarpira is generally in bad form these days with limited ability to sustain offence and poor conditioning so I can't back him until I see him fix those issues

is it too late to send Abdevali to worlds? lol.

I was thinking before this match that we are in a good place for 2028 with Oskou in form and Abdevali being young and improving. I no longer see 77 as a weaker weight for us, we should medal.

I think we should let Oskou compete since worlds is in like 20 something days. It would be a bad for Oskou who deservingly won the selection spot. Similar thing for Bouveiri, let him prove himself on the world stage. Next year is going to be an insane fight for the world team spot. Especially if Sohrabi is moving up as well.

I think there are going to be a couple upsets on the cards. Azarpira I think could beat Yoshida and I can see Ebrahimzadeh beating Sujeet but losing to Kiyooka. Emami has no chance of beating Zhamalov. Nokhodi and Zare are the 2 guys I can see realistically winning gold.

Sujeet is on crazy form this year, he will destroy Ebrahimzadeh easily

Zhamalov is not on form at all so Emami has a chance and would not surprise me if he won

agree Nokhodi and Zare are the two best chances for gold. Zare will probably beat Kasimbek and Sharipov again to get there, almost the exact same run as he had in Asian Championships in April this year lol

I was right about Sujeet, he teched Ebrahimzadeh. He then also beat Kiyooka 3-3 but Kiyooka should have won. Kiyooka beat Ebrahimzadeh 3-2 for Bronze.

Zare beat Kasimbek but he left it very late and it much closer than expected. Kasimbek will be a big problem. He's only 19 and worlds is in Kazakhstan this year... Hopefully Zare just wasn't prepared fully and can fix that. Zare beat Kasimbek 7-0 a few months ago.

And Sharipov managed to fumble a 7-0 lead by getting pinned so Zare will face Behurden from China in the final instead of Sharipov.

Nokhodi beat Shavaev again, this time 3-0. And he joins Zare in the finals.

Sujeet looks really really sharp in all fairness but he is beatable. Kiyooka and Kudiev both gave him problems. Ebrahimzadeh has had 2 close matches with Kiyooka now and I have the feeling the next time they wrestle Ebrahimzadeh will win. Kassimbek has been someone I've had an eye on since junior level since he pretty much always beat our heavyweights. He is really really good but I think its more so Zare not being fully prepared. One thing I liked about Zare's wrestling this time around was the fact he was shooting a lot more. It looks to me he has improved that aspect of his game a lot more, if he wants to win worlds and the olympics he needs to improve his leg attacks.

Nokhodi and Zare both win Asian Games gold as expected

Nokhodi did very well against Ishiguro considering this was more or less his walk around weight. I think he has a future at 86 if he decides to move up but I could also see him staying at 79 since no one in Iran is better than him realistically at this weight. Ishiguro's side of the bracket last year had no one there everyone was on one side. If Ghasempour or Kadiev were on the other side he wouldn't have made it to the final.

Nokhodi can grow into 86 but I haven't seen anything to suggest he would be better than Ghasempour. He could medal with a good draw, like Ishiguro did, but probably not seriously challenge for gold. He is better off staying at 79, though he obviously intends to try to make a run at 86 for 2028.

Kasimbek is only 19, he's a big problem, he already has a win over Sharipov. And worlds is in Kazakhstan this year... And next year Masoumi will be back. Still, I think Zare should continue to beat them both. It would be a disaster if he didn't win gold in 2028.
