With 5 for 5 could we see the end of the open?

The main purpose of opens is to allow unattached wrestlers some experience. With the addition of 5 dates for red shirts we already saw this purpose diminished. Now without dates to protect and no reason to wrestle unattached will we be seeing an increase of invitationals and decrease in the college open?

A lot of invitationals only allow for one wrestler per weight. If that continues to be the case, then I would think you would want to attend opens in order to get your backups some matches throughout the season.  That's one of the good things about an open is you can have as many per weight as you want.  It's also a good way to determine starters in weights where you have two guys that are pretty close.  It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The only Division I invitational that only allows for one wrestler per weight is Cliff Keen Las Vegas. The rest of them all allow for more than that.

I honestly think we will see more invitationals and fewer opens, yes. Not this year, as schedules are pretty much baked in, but in future years.

The main purpose of open tournaments was to make money for the host program.

Hmmm... good to know.  I can see that.  At the end of the day, do those tournaments just change the name to "invitational" and keep doing what they are doing? All they need to do is send invites out to all the schools  that are local and all the schools that typically send kids.  I don't think that it's going to mean much for the Roadrunner Open to be changed to Roadrunner Invitational. I think most or all of the same teams will still be there. I can see high school kids being affected by it not being an open because they technically would not be part of an invite.  I think it will also be at the determination of the coach for each wrestlers development as well. Sending a #3 or #4 guy on the depth chart to the same tourney as your #1 and #2 might not be what is best for their development.

For entry fees? How much money could the possibly miss out on switching from an open go an invitational?

Didn't Cael already kill the "open tournament"?

He's been accused of ruining everything else, may as well credit this to him (if it happens)...

Teams pay entry fees for invitationals instead of the individual.  There are still entry fees.  Invite more teams collect more fees.

No way he’s killing this, if he can get into something like a Binghamton Open he’s going to do it! You know strictly to bring that program money and such…

Yep... looking forward to the quad at Binghamton this year. He does a good job of scheduling teams that will benefit greatly. They came clear out to Oregon State two years ago - was the largest crowd in Gill that year and the largest dual meet ever I believe.

The OP said something along the lines of Opens were held to give non-starters and red shirts a place to wrestle.

I said that Opens were held to.make.the host school money.     CMSU/ UNO and others opens might have 400  wrestlers and 10 mats      @ $20 per wrestler, it was a nice shot of income for smaller programs.   These big tournaments died a decade + ago.   Not sure why

Opens are still a useful tool for fund raising and also a great place to get matches    not sure how  5 for 5 alters who goes since non starters still want mat time    they can still go on their own dime just like before and if the team wants to go, the team can pay the individual fees just like before
