Yes, this is a real thing.   It won't happen.   Many years ago, rural areas of King County WA (where Seattle is) wanted to secede and create Cedar County.   It ultimately is up to the Legislature and they were unwilling to listen.  I would guess this would have to be ratified by Congress somehow.   You think that will happen?

Eastern Colorado periodically wants this as well. They typically bounce between wanting to be a new state and joining Wyoming.

Quick glance at eastern Oregon shows they struggle.  Maybe a change is in order.

Politically speaking, at the national level, it doesn't make much sense to split off and join an ultra conservative state. It would be the opposite of the gerrymandering the right is such a fan of. They would lose any influence they have on the presidential or senatorial races.

I doubt it will happen.   But there are many there that want it to happen.   The question is does Idaho want this?   Eastern Oregon is highly unpopulated.   Mostly a real wasteland.
