Clearly the Michigan State athletic department doesn't care about how wrestling does, at all. But after putting up 0 points at NCAAs as a Big 10 program, it makes me wonder...what would it take for him to get fired? What if he killed someone? Would that do it? I have my doubts.

Thanks lol. On a serious note what is MSU's RTC situation?

Do they have one? I don't think so. Another reason to get Chandler out of there as soon as humanly possible. Take his keys and his parking pass, clear out his locker and clean out his office.

Omg!  THEY SHOULD HIRE.....PEOTA!

Or just let one of the wrestlers coach the team. They could save some money and wouldn't do any worse.

This is true. I would be pretty upset if any bigten program cut wrestling

The only reason to keep him is that he hasn't gotten the program dropped. If they brought in a younger coach, it would be easier to cut. Just like I don't think they would have cut Cal Bap if Lenny Zalesky was still there. They brought in young Derek Moore and faced little serious resistance because he is young and inexperienced.

Ask yourself this---was there anything Minkle could do to lose the same job at MSU?

The school only cares if the program is without problems, and the kids are getting decent grades. Other than that, they don't give two craps about winning.

I like Roger and Chris---but when you are the third best team in the State in the eyes of recruits, you don't always end up with the best talent.

That's saying something considering CMU scored .5!!! Both schools gave coaching job to assistants of downward trending programs. Not sure what they expected. At this point the very best kids are going to Michigan or any other top tier programs. The 2nd tier kids are going to Indiana and Purdue, etc. That makes the 3rd and 4th tier kids are going to MSU and CMU. If the coaches were better some of the kids could turn into something but they don't.

I don't know the coach, but he was assistant to Minkel to 18 years and the program stunk then too.  I remember one year they were in ABSOLUTE last place at NCAAs with NEGATIVE 1 points.  It was super surprising to me when Chandler was appointed head coach to replace Minkel.  What they needed to do was blow up the staff at that point and start fresh.  There is NO REASON any Big10 program isn't performing in wrestling.

Michigan state isn’t the only team in the conference that is a wrestling waste land. Big Ten from top to bottom ,doesn’t throw its weight around anymore. Kids see other opportunities and programs that are producing. With social media coaches recruit all over the country better.

MSU is definitely the worst though.  They’ve placed 40th or worse for 5 years straight.  Northwestern was the only other team that scored zero this year, there was a previous thread about them but they’ve really only had 2 bad years out of the last 9.

The conference has the perennial bottom feeders that never get a chance at the elite level in state athletes. Michigan State can be counted in that group.

Who else are you calling out?  Northwestern is the closest but MSU has been much worse.  Maryland and Indiana remain towards the bottom but really aren’t bad in terms of total D1 and have been improving.  Edit:  Indiana in particular has finished in the top 26 the last 3 years.

We have the group  Purdue , Indiana , Northwestern, Michigan State, Maryland. Wisconsin is trending this way if not careful. No calling anyone out, just looking at the trend in the conference most years, lately. Without landing an in state elite or two, and retaining your developed guys it is impossible to move in the conference most years. Contending with the hammer schools in the conference. I don’t really see how it will change. Coaching is one thing ,recruiting and retaining talent is totally different.

You seem to want to make sure multiple teams are mentioned, but MSU has been by far the worst.

There is a big difference from not  in the top half of the B1G to MSU who literally has almost nothing to promote or accomplishments to push to their fans/AD .

Take Purdue, they have had finalist at different weights in recent years and other AAs.  Sure, they don't compete for B1G team trophies but Ersland has done a good job and shouldn't be lumped with the rest.

I honestly don't know what anyone else expected.  As someone else noted Minkle was terrible at the end of his tenure, even finished with negative points at NCAA once and when he retired they just promoted from within.  I can't imagine anyone thought that was going to create different results. Their athletic department seemed fine with it.

Maybe someday they can get a stud recruit on campus from FL/PR on an unseasonably warm day, tell him its like that all the time, and then they will have someone in the program they can brag about.

MSU is one of only six B1G teams to win a team NCAA championship.  Do they hang that banner in the junior high gym that host's their home meets?

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.
