Did anyone else notice the Antrell Taylor threw his ankle bands at Robideau... They hit him in the chest. What a sore loser.

Robby gave him a look too—dude didn’t seem fazed.

There is some additional context on this that didn't make it into the broadcast.

After the match ended Robideau walked back to the center doing the Michael Jordan hand shrug to the crowd.  After getting back to the center he stood there and looked in the direction of Taylor and started talking whilst pointing down at the ground in front of him in the center of the mat.  I was in the arena and my friend sat next to me said "He's talking shit to him". He being Robideau and that's what it looked like to me too.  After Taylor threw the ankle bands and Robideau started following Taylor looking for his handshake the official put his arm between them and appeared to take a team point. The person next to me and I both thought this penalty was assessed against OSU for Robideau's shit talking.  I did not think at this time that the ankle bands had hit Robideau just that Taylor didn't not want to shake Robideau's hand after the shit talk.

After the finals ended we met up with some friends that sat in a different part of the arena.  From their vantage point they thought that Robideau was talking to the crowd and that Taylor mistook it as talking to him and got upset.  They thought the team point was taken from Nebraska noting the official used his arm with the red wrist band.  I had thought that arm was only used to get between due to the possible altercation, but looking at the team point scoring a point was deducted from Nebraska's total in the finals session.  So he is probably right about the point deduction, but it definitely looked like Robideau was looking in Taylor's direction and talking at Taylor though none of us knew what was said.

I don't think any points were deducted from OSU teams score during the finals session, but looking at the individual team scoring on the Penn State Wrestling club website they have 2 team points deducted from OSU's total.  I think happened earlier in the tournament, but don't recall when that would have happened.

Watching the video of the match uploaded by the NCAA to YouTube you don't really see Robideau talking in Taylor's direction. In the broadcast they cut to Robideau's family after the shrug and when they return the camera angle they use is from behind Robideau.  You definitely can't see him say anything, and you can't see him pointing to the ground either.  However knowing that's what he did you can see when it happens.  As he takes his headgear off with his left hand it's his right that is pointing to the mat.  As he is doing this Jordan Burroughs says "This is beyond aggressive." I think he probably said that because he had the same conclusion my friend and I had - that Robideau was talking shit to Taylor.

Then they cut to a camera angle showing the front of Robideau and you see him nodding and staring in Taylor's direction just before Taylor tosses the ankle bands at him.  Another member of the broadcast team them starts talking about the number of freshman champs.

When the camera returns to Robideau and Taylor, Robideau is pursuing his handshake with Taylor as Taylor tries to walk away.  The official does an apparent unsportsmanlike hand signal  between them with the hand with the red wrist band.

In the post finals press conference Robideau addressed this briefly, "I wanted this match bad.  At the end, I’m usually not a guy who gets in people’s faces, but he was kind of disrespectful, I thought, to my coaches and was kind of up in their face.  So, I wanted to show him this is for the national championship.  You gotta get hard when it matters most and I was ready."

These comments came in a response to a question about the adjustments Robideau made between his loss to Taylor earlier in the year and this match.

I wasn't sure what Robideau was talking about with Taylor being disrespectful.  I didn't see him being disrespectful to the OSU coaches at NCAAs.  I thought he must be referring to their first match from the dual.  That match is on YouTube too.  After winning in tie breakers Taylor points to the ground and says something before point ahead of him and only to return to pointing at the ground in front of him.  It appears on the broadcast that this is more directed to the crowd then Robideau or the OSU staff, but the broadcast could be misleading as it was in the NCAA finals.

I mean this makes sense. Antrell is one of the best heels in the sport.

Constant extra hard hands to the face, dumping people on their heads on every mat return, shut down all offense in big matches then win in rideouts.

He's very physical, just not when trying to generate his own offense.

Perfect heel.

My comment during the finals that was we need an Oklahoma State heel again, it's been too long. I honestly kind of loved this. Kid won a grinder of a weight from the 7, beat Duke and Taylor back to back, and was feeling himself. I normally don't care for such antics, but I like where this is going.

Thanks for the awesome context fishbane. The broadcasts definitely can be misleading and I appreciate the objective way you laid this out.

One clarification — Burroughs said “impressive” not “aggressive.” (He says “This is beyond impressive” as a lead-in to talking about the number of freshman champs.)

About the finger pointing to the center of the mat, since it was the same as what Taylor did last match at Nebraska, I wonder if Robideau was saying the same thing that Taylor said at the dual: “This is my house.”  Would make sense in context.

Much ado about what may be very little.  Thanks for all the clarification Fishbane.  Sometimes returning to center and neatly laying your ankle bands down avoids being misconstrued.   Or how about Merrill immediately going to center, head looking down, and hand extended.  😑

Think that's what he's been doing since high school ... maybe a bit nolfish.

From watching live I thought Robideau was directing his post match antics directly towards Taylor, I could be wrong but it was clearly what Antrell thought as well.

Quickest handshake in wrestling.

To me Merrill just seems like a goof who doesn't take all this wrestling stuff too seriously, it's charming in a way I can't fully explain.

You should take Quinn's job.  Since you can read wrestlers minds you can just report what they are thinking and we won't have to endure the stupid questions.  😉

That is 100% not what I was trying to say, if it was implied that way I apologize.
