He said athleticism doesn't play quite the big role in wrestling as it does in other sports, not that it isn't important at all. I don't think that's an outlandish take. I have heard one very prominent Iowa wrestler refer to some of his coaches and competitors as "not athletic" even

They're all athletic.  They probably can't throw or catch or jump well, but I would bet they have pretty good kinesthetic awareness, balance, isometric strength, etc.  Stuff that is athletic but you usually don'r see on TV.  We define "athleticism" way too narrowly.

We also like to say that wrestlers aren't athletic because it calls attention to work ethic and toughness.  Like... people say Tom Brady wasn't athletic because of how he looks and runs.  That is absurd.

Correct, not sure where they get this mindset.  It's not like there are any Dan Gables, John Smiths, Cael Sandersons, Brands himself (even if the sport has now passed him by), or David Taylors out there to formulate this idea.

NCAA and World Cup champ Rob Koll, NCAA Champ Mark Manning, Big ten champ and NCAA finalist Tom Ryan etc etc etc.   It really doesn't calculate at all.

I think there is very obviously some selection bias in the coaching ranks.

Which is probably why I didn't say wrestlers aren't athletic or "athleticism is not involved in wrestling".  Not sure why you are trying to create a stance that wasn't made just to argue the non-existent stance.

Rather, what was said is that athleticism plays a bigger role in success other sports than it does in wrestling, where high level success is determined more so by process, mindset, and attention to detail (as per the discussion being about high level wrestlers translating to high level coaching, where those are very big components).

To think of it another way......how many high level basketball players and football players have you heard of who have horrible attitudes, horrible work ethics, skip practices, don't take training seriously, etc. etc.  but can compete at a high level feeding off of their athleticism.   Now......how many high level wrestlers have you heard of that fit that same mold??  Are there examples out there, sure, there is always exceptions.   But is that type of description more prevalent in sports like basketball and football....or wrestling?  The answer is pretty obvious.

For sure.   But that doesn't negate the fact that high level athletes translate to high level coaching in the sport of wrestling more so than in places like the NBA, NFL, etc.

How do you get hired to coach at a Division 1 program fresh out of college?  What are the pathways to coaching careers for guys who aren't absolute killers?

I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff Buxton didn't have one of the greatest wrestling minds in the US.  Never was the head coach of a college program.  He was a good college wrestler, but not a champ.

As if a "three time All-American" is a finished product! He improved a lot his senior year.

He recently won an international tournament and smashed Yazdani.  Did you see that coming when he was at Wyoming?

I'm not saying he didn't improve at Iowa. What I am saying is that it's disingenuous to act like they didn't have somebody already preassembled that wasn't already of champion caliber. His placings before Iowa were 8th, 3rd, 3rd. To act like there's no chance he could've won it at Oklahoma is just Hawkeye deepthroating

Somewhat crass, are we ?

I was ready to agree with what you were saying, but did you think- in your wildest dreams, that he would tech Yazdani? Let's be real!

I already said he improved at Iowa. I'm not arguing on that. Iowa has more funds for International competition than Oklahoma. But once again, they got a man who got 3rd twice to 1st. It's not the same as what they did with Caliendo
