  1. You have to think Ramos is the front runner.  I would guess they will interview him and see how the season goes, while doing a national search to see if any Homerun hire want the job.

I doubt they pass over Ramos for another assistant (I don't think Cunningham is viable but I suppose he would be the exception).

  2. Esposito is taking the USA Freestyle development job and rumors are Coleman Scott is returning to be head coach in waiting.

Who does UNC hire?  Assuming Ramos has the inside track, especially this close to the start of the season.  Any other potential names?

Wow! I have to agree with you!

This is where I stopped reading... JK.

In all seriousness, I understand your point and agree that University Presidents/Chancellors care more about  academics than athletics and value the research dollars and ability to bring in the best professors as it has the greater chance to improve their academic reputation/ranking.    I believe schools have experienced an increase in enrollment when they have had national success in football/basketball so I do think you can make an argument for the 5 star QB, but your point, especially the long term viewpoint remains.

Being included in the Big 10 academic alliance is a big deal for them, no question. It is one of the reason any President/chancellor the Big 10 ask to join is going to accept.

BUT it is not the sole criteria for the Big 10 conference to invite new members as Stanford would bring more to the table both academically and overall athletic success.   It's football that is driving the bus.

  4. Every time conference realignment comes up:

Everybody else outside of wrestling: Silence

Wrestling Community:  Maybe this new school will add wrestling. This could be great, just think if "X" was the coach

    Everybody else: Still silence

    Wrestling community: but maybe?

Everybody else: And dilute all of this new money on a non revenue generating sport, why?

    /end scene.

Until another school gets added to the B1G or B12, then repeat.

  5. 1) Star

    2) Brooks

3/4) Carr/O'Toole - I get O'Toole won the last and most important one but was still 1-2 v. Carr this year. I don't think O'Toole goes 3-0 against him next year so these probably flip flop on who won last.  I would put Carr slightly higher since we has the winning record H2H but know that is a minority viewpoint.

    Thanks!

The one thing I would clarify is the ~20 bets with the Draftkings ID in the complaint are not the totality of the alleged bets. So not $2K a bet.

Most likely they are just the ones where they think they can prove it was him making bets under his mom's account.  The complaint alleges that the bets were placed on his phone in locations where only he should be (not available to the public) so I am guessing that is why those particular ID are listed in the complaint.

  7. 4 hours ago, fishbane said:

The complaint did not have specific dates for the draft kings transactions in question.  Whilst some may infer that 10/31 would have been the date of one of the bets, but there is nothing explicit in the complaint to confirm or deny that.  Even if there is someway to find the dates of the referenced draft kings transactions it says that is an imcomplete list.

That is true with regard to the complaint but the Draftkings ticket IDs are known and the State does have those dates.   We (message board readers) just don't know if they occurred when he was a student or earlier if that period is subject to NCAA rules.

The State of Iowa is only charging him with is Tampering of Records by falsifying his identity between 8/25/2021 - 10/31/22.   He was a student from at least August - October of 2022 so there is a some potential overlap.

The State might not even care if a bet was placed when he was subject to NCAA rules; if they can prove he was the one making bets (falsify ID) they could prove their criminal case.

It does seem that Paniro is in some legal trouble but that doesn't necessarily mean he is in trouble with the NCAA, even if he is guilty of the aggravated misdemeanor crime.

Would 11/5 be the relevant date though?  I assume he is on some amount of athletic scholarship.  He would have been on campus taking classes courtesy of the athletic department starting 8/22.

Certainly some NCAA rules reach back before enrollment.  I don't know when gambling becomes prohibited by the NCAA.  When the recruit signs their letter of intent?  When the recruit enrolls?  When they first start classes (~8/2022)?  When they start official practices (~10/2022)?  When they first compete officially 11/5?

My instinct is that it must be before the first competition.

It would be hard to argue the time period he was a student athlete (but prior to competition) is not relevant, especially if he is betting on ISU events during that period.

It's also important to separate the criminal changes from NCAA violations.

Best case:  Paniro denies all criminal charges and remains innocent until proven guilty until he is found not guilty or takes a plea deal on lesser (non NCAA violation type) charges.   Then I don't think (total speculation on my part) the NCAA would have any grounds to suspend since all of the betting took place under someone's else account (i.e. no proof he actually committed a violation).

  9. Not sure why Dresser would be upset with DMR.  All they did was report criminal charges, which were public.   It's possible Paniro's name were not known by the NCAA, and Dresser, since he was (alleged) to have been using someone else's account or disguising his account.   But the criminal charges appear to be real, but hopefully can be beat and Paniro can be proven innocent.

The complaint states some of the bets were made on his personal iPhone in areas not available to the public.  So if this all occurred before he was a student the question is how will the NCAA treat a prospective student who has access the facilities betting on University property and other ISU events?

I do not know the rules, but I would guess the prospective (underage) student gambling on ISU events could be a problem.

    Hopefully not.

  10. So I assume the NXT "announcement" was just a way to hype the TV show, so I don't put much stock in it other than than entertainment value.

But is Gable wrestling at Worlds?  I assume he still is since he went through the process to make the team, but now it appears he will be doing the WWE and training part time for a world medal?

Did you ever wonder why everyone (well pretty much 95%) live next to the far eastern border in Nebraska?  Were they thrown out of Iowa or just still waiting to get in?  Sorry if the facts hurt, just trying to stay on topic.  🙂

Is that why the eastern half of Iowa is more populated than the western half.  Everyone trying to get closer to Chicago  🤔

  12. Recently Ticketmaster has been doing a great job of screwing over fans as much as possible and they don't sell all session tickets to the general public, which makes you buy 6 individual sessions and pay 6 times the fees.  /rant.

My advise would be to book your travel now and wait as long as you feel comfortable to buy tickets. They prices are always crazy after the scalpers buy up the general public tickets but they typically drop the week of NCAAs and even 1st day of the tournament.  Plus, there is usually a few people who have to cancel or have extra tickets that you can pick up from wrestling fans that are more reasonable.

I don't think there is a lot of people leaving and missing the last 2-3 sessions, but if you are waiting and buying individual sessions never pay more than face value for the Saturday morning session. There are always empty seats that don't get filled by hungover wrestling fans.

Serious suggestion - bold face lies should be shunned as thread starters.  Posters that do it as well.  Reminds me of another thread a while back.  Person just wished something to be true so posted it as such.  Brings down the enjoyment of the forum.  Collective lowers intelligence.  Makes it a cesspool.

Serious counterpoint - Thread starters, especially in the off season, that are clearly made in jest and for the purposes of providing humor should be taken as such and anyone taking it seriously should lighten up.   If anyone really thought Gable was going to Campbell, then I fear for our education system more than before I logged on today.

  14. For PSU, I would say everyone is conceivably in play.  ISU finished 2nd, 5th, and 3rd under Cael so I am sure PSU will pay whatever and the ability to have PSU's resources should be tempting for almost anyone.

For Iowa, I would think there is enough time for someone to build a resume and step in.  I can't think of anyone currently that would excite most Hawk fans except maybe Spence Lee but he likely isn't interested until at least after 2028.

  15. Making World Team is hard.

Outside of the freak exceptions like Burroughs/Snyder and few others, the reality is most guys don't maintain World Team spots for sustained periods of time.  The list of guys competing in 2 Olympics is small.

Ramos held the spot at the lightest weight for 2 years and he was the first guy to make back to back teams at the lightest weight since Henson in 2005 and 2006.

Gilman first made the team in 2017 and will be 30 next year.   Unfortunately, he is on the downside of his career.

Add in that USA wrestling has a better system now and we could have multiple top 5 guys at a weight plus you have to squeeze into 6 - 8 weights depending on the year and I would guess we will continue to see more turnover on the World Team, regardless if we have a defending Medalist at the weight.

Also, props to USA wrestling for putting the history of all World/Olympics teams in one spot.   You can go down quite the rabbit hole.

Wrestling coverage post Flo >> coverage pre Flo

But yea, wish they could be better at the streaming.  Overall, really has gone well. But .. when the issues happen, it burn.

Can one of you complainers please start a rival firm, invest a lot to provide excellent streaming and content, to claim all the big $$$ that Flo is getting?  Come on, it isn’t that hard.  Just do it!

I happen to be too busy right now.

Evolve or die.    Life was better after the invention of the horse and buggy than it was before.   People weren't loyal to it when a better product came along.

Right now, Flo has the broadcast rights that keep their subscribers from cancelling despite poor service (by 2023 standards, not pre 2000 standards).

The market will eventually correct itself if that continues.  Whether its ESPN+, Twitch or some other service.
