  1. You should watch his wrestling camp parody, where he teaches kids how to stall and only score enough points to win. He gets real coaches to play along. It's hilarious. edit: found it. Stall Camp
  2. Just spitballing here. PSU fires Cael. Iowa brass can now hire the only active coach more successful than Brands, thereby satisfying all those calling for change at Iowa. Now tOSU alums who have been calling for the firing of Ryan can now hire Brands, the only active available coach with more national championships than Ryan. In order to start fresh with a clean break, PSU hires first time head coach Jordan Burroughs, who will receive a standing ovation when he enters Rec Hall. Finally, the poles with complete the flip from North to South.
  3. Wow. I was referencing access to a University facility, hence the distinction between PSU student vs. non-PSU student. Regardless, it can't be statutory rape at age 17. She's accusing him of rape.
  4. Someone had questioned the weight loss drugs being used to cut weight. The issue preventing its adoption for wrestlers was the side effect of muscle loss for GLP-1 drugs. Looks like it won't be long before that barrier is gone. New Oral Drug - Weight Loss Without Muscle Loss Having been in the drug business, it is really difficult to predict long term effects. This has long term cardiovascular effects written all over it. Edit: Added clarification. They are in Phase 1 trials, so it's still years away.
  5. Oh, I thought she was a PSU student. Man, he's making AJ look like a saint by comparison.
  6. So the thread does involve Starocci, indirectly. If not for the Starocci injury, Lewis would not have been the #1 seed in 2024.
  7. Is there a rule or law against minors in the sauna or locker room? The "crime" is what happens to the minors, #4. She was 17. I was 17 as a freshman. I'm pretty sure I could go in the locker room.
  8. Beware the appeal of coaching change. It happens in all sports. Ryan was added to the conversation because it is the same situation. You have the last two coaches to win national championships, but with no clear path to another despite consistent top 5 finishes. With Brands, you see have seen a pattern of underachievement in recruiting. You need to recruit an average of 3 blue chippers every year and it has been lacking. He has very successfully filled the void with transfers, thanks to a nice war chest of NIL money. Penn State was no different. They had one star recruit, Haines, a few years ago. They filled some holes with transfers, then filled it back up with the last few years. This year was the going to be the uptick for Iowa. They have DeLuca, Luddington, Ferrari. They were getting Bassett and Mocco. They were the favorite for the twins. Now they have lost Bassett and the twins went to OSU. "Fire the coach!!!!!!" Will Pittsburgh fire Tomlin? The Dallas Stars fired their coach. The Knicks fired their coach. Lots of successful coaches get fired while they look for the one that can take them to the championship. The problem is always the same. The next coach is 95% likely to be no better and probably worse than the one you fired. But, if the championship trophy is all you care about, you take the shot. Choose wisely. There were a lot of coaches and losses in between Bear Bryant and Nick Saban.
  9. 1. Theft - Cael knew and it was passed along to University Park police, who have jurisdiction over the crime. 2. Inappropriate actions on the mat - We don't know what, if anything, was reported to coaches, whether it was addressed by coaches, whether it was condoned or continued, or stopped. It will come out. 3. Photos on Group Chat - See above. 4. Sexual assault - the most serious of issues. It is unclear if the accusations were reported to anyone. It clearly wasn't reported to law enforcement, or they would have been obligated to open a case file on it. One thing that is missing from the reporting is the timeline of each step of the above events, and the timeline of awareness and response by staff. You pose the right questions, but the order is wrong. Will we get the facts, or not? If yes, we can answer the other questions.
  10. It's more difficult now that BB became available after signing AJ. It also gets complicated in that Nebraska is known to take care of the ones that are already there, so there is little to no NIL money left for immediate use. I think they have now reversed and said they think it will NOT be PSU, although they think OSU isn't a good fit. It seems like even with the new NIL rules, it's going to be easy for people to cheat. They just need one of Buffet's Berskshire Hathaway guys that loves Nebraska wrestling, or maybe Larry the Cable Guy can help, or is he just a football fan.
  11. Agreed. Let's do an Occam's Razor: Carter takes snaps. Carter posts on a group Snap-Chat. Beau tells Cael. Cael goes to Carter and says, "WTF, delete the Chat, delete the photos, that s*** can destroy your life." Carter complies. Nothing else is done by Cael, no more photos are take or posted. Fire Cael?
  12. Wow, I read a couple of pages of comments, then went back and read the article. I expected the article to be way more damning, especially of Cael. While a fan of Penn State, I was never a big fan of Starocci. He was always a bit too much, a la AJ. What is amazing is the level of Schadenfreude on this forum, including the Iowa/Bo Bassett divorce. I imagine Caveira to be a guy who sits at his computer, types a comment, then does a little dance around the basement, then back to keyboard to write another troll post about the Penn State situation. Let me know when he hits 100 posts on the subject. Another observation is all the comments about wrestlers and their proclamations of their faith. Lots of schadenfreude every time one of them has a failure. But, I never thought Straocci was one of those guys of faith. Like AJ, it would seem more like a facade, whereas Kirk was far more genuine and quiet about it. Cael isn't outspoken about it either, maybe because Mormonism isn't quite the same. So, Starocci was one of those guys. It's pretty common in high school and even in college. Cocky a-hole that does s*** that he thinks is funny or cool and people and teammates put up with, even pretend to like the stuff they do. I remember being a lowly sophomore running back on the varsity team and feeling this warm water hitting my leg in the big group shower area. It was the all-conference lineman peeing on my leg, laughing the whole time. That crap has been going on for a hundred years. (Ironically, we were friends later while on the wrestling team) At this point in time, he has been found guilty of nothing, charged with nothing. He is accused of something or things. As for Cael, it is easy to second guess his inaction, but I'm not really sure it's reasonable to expect him to have done much else. We will know more later.
  13. I gave. Who's going to match me?
  14. Someone post the link to donate to his medical fund and maybe pin it. I bought my tee shirt.
  15. I would like to update my response.
  16. Does he start all over with 50+? I think Campbell would be a good fit. Sure, he will be happier, too, as he will get more NIL money when he transfers in, as opposed to committing as a Freshman.
  17. How many of the 356 teams on Bo's list were really in the running? He wants to keep options open and probably is curious about different schools, e.g. campus and facilities. No one knows how long the real list is. It could be three, or it could be just one. Even if it is just one, there is no reason to commit now anyway. Let's go with opening probabilities of 70/20/10, UI, OSU, PSU.
  18. I'm not clear on how the system works as I haven't been following college wrestling for that long. To a new casual observer, I find it odd that all the women's programs are smaller schools, despite the newer programs like Iowa and OSU starting up. What are the economics where all these small schools can have a non-revenue women's program, but the more well funded institutions don't? I feel bad for a lot of the girl wrestlers because their choices are limited. It's not that the smaller schools aren't great institutions, but bigger schools can offer a lot of programs that smaller schools can't. It is just another choice for the athlete. Plus, I think a women's Big 10 championship would be pretty cool.
  19. You are inferring here. Other coaches may believe the timing of the event isn't detrimental to success in March, or they like the chance for program exposure and a million dollars knowing they aren't winning NCAA's anyway. Winning national duals may be a bigger deal to other programs, but holds no such value to Cael. I've felt that, while I love watching Cliff Keen, a grueling tournament like that may be detrimental to performance in March. Unlike 5 matches in a couple of days, ASC is one match at the beginning of the year. Cael's job isn't to make any event as good as it could be. PSU absence from any event makes it "less good as possible". Is it somehow not as bad that they don't participate in Cliff Keen because they aren't the only one that doesn't. Choosing to stick to your game plan vs. $200k does equal being a prick. If your favorite team were offered $1 million to fly to India for an exhibition match and fly back the day before NCAA's, your coach is not a prick for turning it down. What Cael has said about the event is quite different. So, if you, like many, believe the sport would be better if PSU didn't dominate, should Cael tank the NCAA's for the good of the sport? If you asked any coach a hypothetical, "Would you participate in National Duals if it guaranteed a worse result at NCAA's?", I think they would all say no, regardless of the "good for the sport" argument. So, 16 coaches think it won't hurt their chances and one does. But most of the 16 have no shot at the podium anyway and one keeps winning doing it his way. If the dates for next year's National Duals were firmed up right now, I think there is a chance Cael rearranges next years plan in order to participate.
  20. Good one. New recruiting question by high schoolers, "Coach Brands (or any coach), how many kidneys do you have? Oh, and what's your blood type?" If it is a match, you pick Iowa because they have four matching kidneys.
  21. Let's use a little bit of Occam's Razor here, based on his previous view on national duals. As a PSU fan, I would love to see them at National Duals. I would love for them to wrestle in 5 tournaments and 20 duals a year. That would be great. Reality is as follows: The primary goal of the Penn State team is to win the NCAA championship. The measure of the teams accomplishments will not be how many victories at National Duals, Cliff Keen, or even Big 10 championships. Everything on their schedule is therefore designed to allow the team to peak at the NCAA championships. Anything that interferes with that game plan is a negative and won't be acceptable to Cael. So, despite the fact that the concept of National Duals is a great one for determining the best team in the country, that is not the recognized metric for that designation. It is still the NCAA championships. So, Cael is not going to do anything that may be detrimental to that goal. Having said that, National Duals are a great idea. Can't wait to watch. Wish PSU were there, even if they used all their backups (will the matches count against red shirt limits?). I also believe it is quite possible that Cael will join the fun in the future if he feels the timing can be incorporated into his run to the national title.
  22. Time for some regression analysis Take all the performers and their seeds and see if there is a relationship between seed and under/over performance. A #1 seed can never overperform, but is a 32 seed more likely to over-perform than an 8 seed? Is there an optimum seed for overperforming?
  23. The answer is simple. Cael has created his seasonal protocol in order to achieve his primary goal and that goal is as many NCAA championships as possible. He may care about the dual record, but only as a secondary achievement on his way to the career record of season championships. Isn't that what we would all want in his shoes? The Collegiate Duals interfere with his seasonal protocols, therefore he has no interest as he sees it as detrimental to his primary goal. Once he gets criticized for not participating (I would love to see them in the event), he points out that the tournament can still be a great event without them, which is true. Even as a Penn State fan, I found the Nebraska vs. UNI, OSU vs. Iowa duals quite compelling. My hope is that if the Collegiate Duals continue with a fixed date, Cael will adjust his seasonal plan to incorporate the event. I would love to see Penn State wrestlers wrestle 30+ matches a year. I would also love seeing my favorite running backs carry the ball 40 times a game and my favorite pitchers start 36 games a year like the old days, but I get it.
