We would only really know his true allegiance if he was not paid as much as he is rumored to have been paid. The question is, If he does have a true allegiance, why did it take so much for him to stay/return for 5th year? It they did offer 1M, would he have returned for half that? I am all for paying college athletes, but 1M (even $500,000) seems excessive. It would be nice if there were some guidelines. Soon PSU will have 10 athletes who are millionaires. I would find it easier to find allegiance if I was given 1M in college.

Iowa should hire these 3 coaches

Nice history lesson. Don't think that's possible (even a modicum of that success) in modern day wrestling (last 40-50 years). -

It does not guarantee being a great coach, but without some level of success on the mat, you will be severely hampered as a wrestling coach. -

You see more non-great in their sport coaches in Basketball and Football at the highest level (some never having competed in the sport even). Doesn't work in wrestling. Wrestling is such a feel sport that you can't just teach Xs and Os. Now, being the best wrestler isn't necessary, but having some level of success is. And, as proven by the 3 best coach-wrestler combos (Gable, Smith, Sanderson) they have a feel for the sport that can't be read in a book and can only be taught by show and feel (and they have amazing mental side to relate to athletes as well). They can both show proper movement, proper execution, and can give the correct feel and pressure when working directly with athletes. I was talking with a retired professional football player recently and I told him that the difference between coaching football and wrestling is, wrestling coaches actually wrestle with heir athletes. Football coaches give instructions. -
The leadership on the PSU team is lacking integrity. I don't agree that Cael and Co shuttered when Cater accepted a 5th year NIL. The dynasty made it necessary to offer the kitchen skink to secure him and I'm sure Cale is fine with that. This new era of paid to play is a different beast.

I am a neutral party when it comes to watching college wrestling, but have always enjoyed PSU since Cael. But the new arrogance and WWE bravado of some of their athletes is off putting. Especially this last dump Carter laid on the face of PSU/NLWC wrestling and one of the most decorated US wrestlers in history. He will probably will win 5 titles, but because of his continued comments will never reach the level of respect as a wrestler/coach as DT. David had a short stint on social media during the 2016 Cox Olympics, but that seems like an anomaly. Carter's antics seems more like a character flaw.
-
What he also doesn't understand, if his comment is directed at DT, is DT is playing at a different level now. This is his livelihood. This is his new profession and he is setting his family up for life at one of the storied programs. Should he wait for 10 years to see if Cale steps down and gives him the program. We see how that played out for CScott.

You're thinking about the wrong Zane. -

I agree with Brooks. Think we will find out DT lost to one of the best wrestlers in the world. 2. I also think the same about Spencer... Think he is going to show us at Olympic Qualifier. 3. Vito (at 61, my favorite to watch) 4. Zane (at 70 not sure at 65) put him ahead of Dake because of a more consistent attacking offense. 5. Dake (Side note. If Brooks is as good as I feel he is, we may have the top 2 P4P at the same weight) -
Sometime in the 90s there was still a slip throw but you were not brought back to your feet. The other wrestler gets a shot at a turn with no takedown scored. Thought that was good.

We could change it to they way the score (judge) figure skating. Or maybe boxing or MMA. -

Is this real or a way out? -
That's how all online "news" sources are. Desperate to be the first headline at the expense of accurate reporting and writing. News is about clicks and nothing else.

Poll: Who is the GOAT American wrestler?

There is a difference between opinion and fact and my comment about opinion is fact. -

You may be trying to be sarcastic, but my opinion about opinions isn't an opinion. -
Yes...

Just pointing out that an opinion is just that, an opinion and thus needs no supporting evidence. -

Opinions don't need criteria, unless your opinion is that you need criteria... -

But then you start adding new criteria... In a row, longevity, ability to make money, #of Russians in the weight, going undefeated when you win gold, rule sets, how many different rule sets did you win under, how many weight classes, winning with a an injury, who did you beat on the way to your gold. I'm sure I missed a few criteria. The best way to look at it, like someone already said, the best at their prime... But that's a judgment call. -
Hopefully two more years at 61 and then two at 65 will allow him to win a couple more World titles and eventually Olympic gold. He's been the most fun to watch around this weight for a long time.

You beat me to it... I'm not a superstitious person, except when it comes to this topic.

I've thought this for quite some time. I've also wondered how much better he would actually have been over his career if he was more offensive minded. Could he have been the undisputed best? When he attacked legs he was amazing (maybe his age reversal antics are backfiring and time has caught up with him). What if leg attacks were his go to?

I agree, Ryan claims the moral high ground, and maybe he can, but he also admitted that he lost out in the battle for Mesenbrink so he was trying and his argument sounds like sour grapes. The transfer portal and NIL has changed the landscape, we could argue if that is good or bad, but to me the bigger question is, maybe he's just not as good at the NIL/transfer portal as other coaches/programs. His saying there needs to be an asterisk next to PSU points record adds to the feeling he is struggling with accepting he just isn't as good at this new way of doing things. He kept preaching about culture. "We are not going to compromise our culture." Good for you, but you may then need to know, in this day and age, you may not do as well as other teams.

I also think Dake has been figured out internationally. His performance at last year's worlds was much less dominant than in the past. His Dake bomb was less effective. Now that Burrows has taken the last year to focus solely on Dake it will be interesting. He never had to figure Dake out because he always won before. Now it's a different story.
