Because Republicans are trying to pin it on liberals and they are clearly lying. When someone tries to defame you with obvious lies, it's rational to push back. Stepping back from the current context, I don't care. This country has thousands of borderline schizophrenic psychos, on both sides of the political divide. Consequence of the internet. No, he specifically was not paid by either organization for speaking, in the case of Africa, or for serving on the board, for the state government. There is no wiggle room for you here. So we have a million pieces of evidence pointing towards him being conservative, and you want to go all-in one one piece that is easily explained away.

He served on a bipartison pro-business council with other conservatives and liberals, yes. That doesn't mean he's a liberal. Don't know about the immigrants thing. He was a Christian missionary in Africa. Again, trying to get Christians into the country doesn't mean he's not Conservative. Conservatives support that stuff all the time.
