Difficult choice. As of this moment I think I'd lean Blaze but I can see an argument for any of the three. It'll be interesting to see how each guy is handled as a freshman. All three are good enough to go right away.

From 125 - 157 they were seeded: Camacho - 7 seed - DNP (-2) Orine - 3 seed - 8th (-5) Jack - 4 seed - 7th (-3) Arrington - 3 seed - DNP (-6) Scott - 4 seed - DNP (-5) IMO every one of those guys is somewhere between the 6th and 12th best wrestler at their respective weights. Every single one of them won the ACC "tournament" and was subsequently overseeded because of it.

Definitely a fair question, and it's actually much worse than I would've even guessed digging into it a little. Looking just at seed/place difference, NC State was at -22 in this year's tourney. This is the worst mark in the last 10 years of the tournament (possibly all time, but I stopped looking after 10 years). Beyond that, NC State was last place in this metric each of the past 3 seasons (-22 in 2024, -11 in 2023, -11 in 2022). Obvious conclusions here are that they're either being overseeded, or completely falling apart at the end of the year. Probably a bit of both but I would lean more towards the latter.

I actually love this hire.

I don't think there's a clear cut #2 at all. WrestleStat currently projects Oklahoma State as a solid #2, which I think is fair. And that's with Spratley/Hughes/Jamison/Williams scoring 7 team points between them--which I think is very low. Ohio State has a lot of upside up and down the lineup, but Mendez can't do better than he did last year, and I'd venture to say the same about Welsh. Feldman could take another step up so that shouldn't be ignored. Iowa with Parco and Brands could get to around that 70 point mark. With Ferrari even more. I wouldn't count out NC State either. If Trumble emerges as a contender they could have 7 or 8 AA's and a finalist or two.

It's a fair point, but also worth considering that different people thrive in different environments. He developed into a national champion with his current coach. It's possible that this is the best situation for him, despite the perceived lack of competition in the room.

I suppose Taylor could hook his whole team up with Coach Cal. DT had to seek that out on his own, and figure out how to win in the margins away from Cael, before he got over the hump and started actually making world teams.

someone used to call out pop on no alcohol
steamboat_charlie replied to Scouts Honor's topic in College Wrestling
I'm confused by the title of this thread... But anyway, I don't recall seeing people "calling out" Pop. More just acknowledging that his policy is his policy. His program has a reputation for strict abstinence, year round, no second chances. Most programs have rules against drinking and/or partying during the season. His are just more strict, and there are pros and cons to that approach. -
This happens all the time. Sometimes an “understanding” is actually the opposite. It was beneficial for Oklahoma State to bring in Coleman last year. People get skipped over when they think they’re in line just about as often as they get chosen.

Oh. First time seeing one of those.

Did you take this picture with a flip phone? I mean, I know what it is, but at the same time I feel like I'm in 9th grade bio examining a petri dish.

Wow. I try not to be hyperbolic, but this feels like the first genuinely groundbreaking hire since Cael joined PSU. Not only do I expect Taylor to pull many top recruits, but Oklahoma State in the past 18 months has pulled many of their own, and had boosters step up for some more. DT is not walking into a bare cupboard. They already had the bones of a top 3 team on the way in.

Meh in what way? The Askrens are bringing guys to the collegiate and senior level that are ready to compete right away. I don't see why they wouldn't be effective coaching at the next level. They have a unique approach, with seriously impressive results. Notice how each of their guys wrestles with their own identity? This isn't the same type of dominant high school factory we've seen in the past where a coach molds each of his guys in his own image.

Iowa's transfer-laden team CAN beat Penn State
steamboat_charlie replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
IF that's their actual lineup come March, it's extremely formidable. Even so PSU will be favored. But that's a big if. -
Yeah. I think if you made me pick today I'd go with either of Forrest or Basset as I think they're both pretty close to can't miss prospects. If you're Penn State you might just nab the entire bunch and call it a day.
-
It's an interesting question. Basically what you're asking is would you take two top 10 prospects over a #1 prospect. I tried to look back at recent recruiting classes to see where it would've made sense to take the one guy over the two, and I don't think there's an obvious answer at all to this question. Take 2017--you could take Fix at #1 and you would've gotten amazing production. You also could've had Yianni and Vito if you're Cornell, or Lee and Warner if you're Iowa. Third option, you could have Nick Lee and Berge at Penn State... a little less clear. 2018--Gable vs. Sasso/Hoffman or Parris/Silva. In that scenario Gable's the better pick. 2019--Kerkvliet vs. Schultz/Chlebove, or Kharchla/Decatur. Kerkvliet looks like the best option there. 2020--Amos vs. take your pick... any combo is pretty much better. 2021--Shapiro vs. Kueter/Arnold... remains to be seen. If both Raney brothers end up being internationally credentialed (i.e. medal winners in freestyle juniors), I would take them. The miss rate on those guys is too low to pass up a chance to fill two spots in your lineup with surefire AA's and possible title contenders.

Thanks, haven't been keeping up with the portal so didn't know if what I was reading was remotely accurate.

Is it a foregone conclusion that Iowa is getting both Alirez and Parco?

Defining ‘Generational Talent’
steamboat_charlie replied to Dark Energy's topic in College Wrestling
I think that's fair. In team sports there's also the added dynamic of having generational talents by position. E.g. Mahomes is clearly a generational talent at the quarterback position. Meanwhile Justin Jefferson is also clearly a generational talent at the wide receiver position, in the same generation. Lee is a lightweight, Steveson a heavyweight. I think there's room for them both. -
Defining ‘Generational Talent’
steamboat_charlie replied to Dark Energy's topic in College Wrestling
Of course generational talent is overused. When I stuck the label on Brooks I was doing a tongue in cheek NFL equivalency. In present day national sports media parlance, there’s a generational talent about 10 times per generation. -
Brooks is your surefire prospect, easy #1. Generational talent with all of the character traits you want, plus the product on the mat. A guy you're comfortable handing the keys to your franchise to. Think Andrew Luck. Vito is a bit of a trickier prospect. The talent is there and at his peak he's up there with the best... but where exactly does he fit in? Not sure you can build your team around a guy that's not filling a marquee position (weight). If you get David Carr you're certainly not disappointed, but you wonder about his peak production. The floor is high. He's going to be good. We know that. But is he capable of taking the next step (i.e. will he ever make a world team?)? Gomez is a walking red flag. You take a guy with his injury history this high in the draft and you're really putting your job on the line as a GM. Could you get 2 to 3 years of high level production out of him? Possibly. Might he be off your roster in 2 years? Also possible. Trent Hidlay is a guy you draft because you know exactly what you're going to get. He's going to grind. He's going to be in the mix. He's going to make your team better. He's not going to be an MVP--you know that. But he's also not going to get you fired. Griffith... the production is there, but there are major questions about his ability to translate to the next level, and I also have some questions about his love of the game. Fair or not, it seemed at times like he was going through the motions this year just waiting to secure his bag. I think that drops him down the board. Lewis--see Gomez description, x2. His best days might be behind him. If you can get him low enough in the first round he might be worth taking a flyer, but a top 10 pick is iffy. Fix is another guy where you know what you're going to get. You add him to your roster and you sleep well at night. He might even make a few pro bowls before it's all said and done. I think he goes higher based on his floor.

Spencer Lee vs Caitlin Clark ($$$)
steamboat_charlie replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I guarantee you their next deal will be radically improved for the players, even if the WNBPA does a terrible job (which they probably will).
