I think it’s pretty common for refs to talk to the wrestlers like that during the match.   I just don’t think they’re often mic’ed up

I wrestled from age 6-23 (D1) and it appears to have gotten significantly worse, scholastically...mic or no mic.

Our college coaches frequently mentioned to never leave the match in the ref's hands.  While not always applicable, it was the goal.

Every youth coach says the same thing...

He would say, "Improve, improve!" at times that seemed... strange.

And he was doing it often. I ended up listening to the PSU broadcast instead.

That's how you know it was bad

Problem in wrestling is, there's nothing stopping an official from slapping the wrestling mat in the middle of a handfight, other than the fact that he'd never be allowed to officiate (or probably even spectate) a wrestling meet ever again.

It's not so much the ref talking, as much as it's the ref being mic'ed up. The talking isn't necessarily a bad thing to push action or to inform wrestlers that they're about to get dinged for stalling or still have control or whatever. It gets annoying though when the ref is competing with and sometimes talking over the pbp and color guy during the broadcast.

Glad I wasn’t the only one annoyed by the ref. He didn’t do a very good job, that’s for sure. He had the Indiana-PSU match also and kinda stunk up the joint there too. This year is the first I recall seeing him, must be new? Doubt we see him at Nationals. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Nak, check this out - you don’t want to mess with this ref! I had to watch it a few times to review all the moving parts. Read the new 2025 ruling about those assaulting officials. This coach got his ass laid out plus he’ll have to pay a $1500 fine, now has a record and will probably lose his job.

Whoa!! I suggest calmly and slowly walking the challenge brick over to that ref and praying.

How did you do as a 6 to 10 year old D1 wrestler?  😉
