Curious for what the rule book says.

Kinda thought that if no contact before whistle, all good.  Each wrestler just has to have foot on line.  What they are doing with rest of body, as long as they don’t contact other wrestler is immaterial before the whistle.

Looks like I’m wrong.  Hoping to see the language related to ‘rolling start.’

Art. 1. Neutral Starting Position. The wrestling position in which both wrestlers are on their feet, standing opposite one another, with their lead foot on the green or red area of the neutral position starting lines, and their other foot even with or behind the lead foot. When the wrestlers assume the neutral starting position, both wrestlers shall remain stationary until the referee sounds the whistle.

That was on the ref.  Feel bad for McGowan.

Agreed. They did reverse it after review, but still on the ref.

@BigRedFan - you da man.  Thank you.

I can see a tough situation where a ref blows the whistle before one guy can even settle into a stance.  Doesn’t get time to be stationary.   As people are saying, refs need to ensure they don’t blow the whistle until there is a pause where both are stationary.

But if ref screws that up, hard to call caution on wrestler that was trying to get to a stationary position.  (Not what occurred in the McGowan situation — he was not trying to pause - clearly)

Dunno if this is still a thing but when I was in hs, the local officials switched from NCAA style quick whistles to a prolonged pause before restarting the action, supposedly because too many wrestlers were jumping the whistle. Like after both guys get back to the line, the ref would pause for maybe 3-4 seconds before blowing the whistle. Or worse, do the pause after the top man sets. Kind of added tension, tbh.
