Azarpira, who looked like crap in the 1/8s dominated his Indian opponent fast.  So he looks pretty good.

I was very confused how the scoring went down in that Taz match, can someone explain? It was 9-4 Taz after the lost challenge, then UWW got a TD and the didn't change the score. To me it's 9-6. Then UWW got 4 exposure, making it 10-9 UWW. Then Taz came up on top to be 10-10. UWW would have had criteria then.

Was the exposure not 4? Was that TD after the challenge not counted for some reason?

Team points heading into today's four finals with 10 points added to each bronze medal finalist and 20 points added to each gold medal finalist (no points calculated in for 7th to 10th places for today's finals weights):

Iran 90

US 85

Azerbaijan 78

Japan 65

They initially didn't add the 2 for the TD. Then I think the exposure was 2 not not 4. Then UWW got a step out. So it was 2 + 2 + 1

So Usmanov at 79 KG lost in the repechage semi-finals this morning.  He will NOT be wrestling for a medal.

I believe when they make the finals, they add 20 points already.  Same when they make the Bronze match, they add 10 points.  So winning them will only add five points each.

He was aggressive, which you don't see that against Amouzad, typically.  Amouzad was also more chirpy than I've ever seen him.  Complaining a lot.  Was clearly gassed early, which is typical against the USA.

It makes me wish we could have seen someone like Retherford against him (but that would have had to have been at 70 KG, not 65 KG Retherford).  Unfortunately, we don't have anyone at 65 KG that is going to make that a match, I don't think.  Maybe Mendez?  Not really sure.

I think Woods came in with the right gameplan.  Come out firing and try to not give up any big moves.  The problem with not trying to give up big moves while being aggressive is that it was Amouzad.  Big, fast, and really fckn good.  I was happy with Woods performance there.

Since I was in transit (and then, dealing w/ work related issues, of course).. I didn't get the chance to watch the whole Woods/Amouzad match. I'll have to view it later when I get the chance to do so.

On w/the viewing, champs!

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

OK thanks, that sure did look like 4 on the exposure when watching live but I'm not going to act like I remember where his legs/knees were.

Taz did not look good and gassed just as badly as UWW. He's vulnerable if he wrestles like that again.

Rare to see someone who can match Amouzad's length.

They add nothing on anything published by the UWW until all finals matches have been wrestled. The totals I just put up include all of the points from the 4 weights that finished yesterday PLUS the points earned to this point by the gold and bronze finalists (20 and 10, respectively, as you said). You're right, then, that any match win tonight adds only 5 more points to the totals I wrote up.

A note, though: I just did some napkin math and Lee looks like he's got 7th or 8th. So the US actually have 6 or 8 more points and lead Iran heading into tonight.

I mean, Sujeet doesn't have the same length... he's just closer than Woods was.

Rivera not doing much.  Down on criteria 1-1 with about 2 minutes to go.  Both points off shot clocks.

23 seconds to go for Rivera.  Down 5-3 now with a TD.

Uzbekistan clearly gassed and holding on for dear life.  Rivera loses a match he did nothing in for the first 5M35S.

That was the first match for Rivera at a Worlds competition where he just... did nothing.  His greatest attribute is that he is gritty and never stops pushing.  He makes up for so much with that.  Then he doesn't utilize that against a guy who he should have beaten soundly.

That was so disappointing.

I don't know where he's getting his extra points. Iran had a published 60 from the 4 weights that finished last night. And they have 3 wrestling for bronze and nothing else (3 x 10). That's 90. We had a published 35 from the 4 finals weights last night and have 2 gold finalists and a bronze finalist (20 x 2 + 10 = 50). That's 85 for us. Plus Lee is 7th or 8th, which is another 6 or 8 points. That's 93 or 91. Not sure what else he's adding in.

Sujeet gonna be quite the challenge for Woods, but he did get 9-0’d by Japan’s number two this year.

edit- I’m an idiot, it was a forfeit.

Because he (and Flo) keep a running score of the matches.  Meaning they give 20 when someone makes the finals, 10 when they make Bronze, etc.  It's how they do it and have been doing it for as long as they have been covering Worlds/Olympics.

They also do this with NCAAs.  Once they make the semi-finals they get the allocated points for at least 6th place, when they win the semi-finals they get the allocated points for at least 2nd place, etc.

This is all S.O.P.

Sujeet destroyed Johnny D a couple years ago, IIRC.  Is this his only match against USA up until now?

Yes, I'm doing the same.

US

57kg : 8th place = 6

61kg: 5th place = 10

65kg: nothing yet

70kg: 0

74kg: at least 5th = 10

79kg: at least 2nd = 20

86kg: 1st = 25

92kg: at least 2nd = 20

97kg: nothing yet

125kg: 0

TOTAL = 91

Nomad and Flo have been doing this for a while now.  I trust their pre-quarters numbers.  Meaning Iran widened the gap with two victories in the quarters.

Guy is a creep-turd, but he doesn't get this wrong.
