You could also see in a number of situations Tyson catching himself and holding off on wide open opportunities to knock his a** out.   There is a reason he was biting his gloves so much in that....I'm not sure what to call it....display?

There was a sequence in the 2nd or 3rd round where Tyson had a gaping hole of an opportunity to flatten him and just didn't. If he had thrown a punch in that instant, Paul would have woken up in the locker room to his brother snorting a line of cocaine that would kill an elephant.

You get gassed pretty quick when you're 58 yrs old.

This is true.

Tyson had a number of opportunities but didn't capitalize.  I agree with that.   We were watching it and couldn't believe it.   Had to believe he was gassed, but after the fight, it seems likely he chose not to flatten Jake.  I saw genuine fear in Jake's eyes in the first period like I said.

Asked why he was biting his gloves, he said he has that nervous tic, likes to bite things.   My son rolled with laughter at that comment.

I think it's  reasonable for him to be in the top 50 cruiserweights or beat someone in top 50. A rematch w fury would be very winnable.

I agree he isn't a title contender right now. Props for making the fat cash though. Since so many people want to watch him or have interest. Look at us here talking about this guy.

Let's just get straight to the point - Paul is not 'impressive' as a professional boxer. He's simply not. Yet.

What is impressive about him is that he (and, well, mostly his managers) have been able to make an extremely large amount of money off his exhibition matches. I used to post here about him a while back, too. His marketing group generates much interest, no doubt. If money making was more important than boxing ability - he'd hold the belt.

Back to thread - Paul's group has made a ton of money, and they've been generous with it toward his opponents. Nothing wrong with that at all, it is commendable. Boxing isn't a profession known for creating wealth for anyone but champions.

Here's the thing. Real boxing organizations haven't ranked him - for the simple reason that he's not shown he's good enough yet.

He's got a large group of fans, and I wish him the best of luck. But marketing and popularity isn't going to get him into the top 50. That'll be all on him tackling real pro fighters. To see that, I may even buy a ticket.

Let's see what next ones look like. They only rank the top 15 or so though.

WBA said if he beat Chavez they would put him in the top 15.  We'll see if they do after that......"fight".   And if they do, the question is are they doing it because they truly believe he's a top 15 fighter, or are they doing it to force him to put up or shut up about how legitimate of a 'contending boxer' he really is.   It's not like the boxing councils have a clean history lacking any corruption or impropriety.

Yes, I agree. That's why I cited the BoxRec ranking of #69. Great White brought up real boxing organizations not ranking him though.

If was ever in a pro fight, he would lose unless he fought a real nothing.   He would have to work his way up the ladder so to speak and his fights wouldn't earn as much I wouldn't think.   I'm guessing he keeps with the exhibition fights., makes lots of money, and doesn't get seriously hurt.

I really thought Tyson was going to win.   and in the 1st round, I really thought it as he came out very strong.   But he either couldn't or wouldn't keep up the pace.   And I think it was more wouldn't than couldn't.

You absolutely win this one. I'm shocked - I did not see this coming. Not sure how to explain it.

Jake Paul at #14 by the WBA.

It's not without controversy, but that doesn't change the fact that you were right, and I was wrong.

(Not something you see posters say around here much - but they really should far more often. It's OK to be wrong.)
