Until the athletes are considered employees by the school, there really isn't anything that can be done. The current laws that are on the books don't allow anyone to tell a student where they can go to school or how they can monetize their likeness. That applies to receiving money while not using their likeness. All of the other conversations about how we "wish things were" are silly. 1 1

Expand If no one knows who this is then how can he/she have any image value? Now is someone willing to pay him/her to play the sport ... well what is 15th at weight worth at NCAA tournament? Probably not even half a point so ... .

Expand Why would we want to tell a student how they can monetize their likeness? Why would we want to limit them from receiving money for any wrestling related reason?

Expand There are a ton of wrestlers mentioning products to social media followers. That is by far the most common way to monetize your likeness.

Expand I don't see how athletes could not be considered employees once the House settlement goes into effect. Schools & athletic departments worry about this, because then it will be a matter of time before athletes unionize and further de-leverage their institutions. I look forward to being able to look up the compensation of d1 athletes at public universities. 1
