It’s been a rough tourney once again for seniors. Kai Orine, Isaiah Salazar, Jacori Teemer and Carson Kharchla all went 0-2 BBQ. All have gotten worse with age, injuries piled up and HEW. I am against redshirts unless a guy isn’t the best at his weight class. If you are the best you wrestle. Did I miss some other past AA’s who went 0-2? Kyle Parco will be soon joining them

So the brutal part is that redshirt year teaches you how to get out. But by RS senior year your body is either completely beat up or you are in full prime, no in between. It's a miserable conundrum. Baseball typically avoids redshirts and I am inclined to follow that suit for high level kids but anything less than absolute blue chip says otherwise. Look at Gabe Arnold today as a prime example of someone who is very fundamentally sound and beats B1G competition as a RS frosh but is still unlikely to "only" make it past R16/R12. And he is one hell of a wrestler despite his twitter fingers

Keep an eye out for Richie Figs. NC last year, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't place this year.

I agree with you. I think it's also so much different now than it was even 15 years ago. For the most part, 15 years ago guys wrestled their high school schedule, NWCA nationals, Fargo, and maybe another big event or two. Most blue-chip recruits would only be truly tested in a handful of matches each year in high school, and cruise their way through most of their high school careers. Now, guys are beating up their bodies through high school with things like WNO, 16u WTT, 20u WTT, Super-32, and already coming into college with more wear. They then beat their bodies down further by prolonging eligibility with the ease of medicals, covid-years, frequency of Olympic redshirts, etc. The rigor of a college wrestling schedule is not conducive to what a 24-25 year body requires to perform at it's peak.

I said it before I'll say it again, don't transfer to Iowa as a senior.  That always leads to short NCAA tournaments due to injury or fatigue.  Woods, Eierman, Teemer, likely parco as well (I think I saw that he had a bunch of tape under his black knee sleeve, could be something pre-existing.)

I'm really invested in Buchanan bucking the trend though, for racecar reasons.

Woods and Eierman did not transfer to Iowa as seniors and each also had their best NCAA performance while donning the black and gold. Correlation does not equal causation, but still worth noting.

People like reverting back to the "best NCAA performance" yet don't look further.  Of course they did.  Their weight classes cleared out and they arguably were worse at Iowa.     Eirmann was beating Nick Lee when he was at Missouri.   Woods was the second highest placing returner and placed second.  Then got worse the more time he spent in the Iowa room.

Does Kharchla have another year of eligibility?  I thought he was done but looks like he may be able to get a medical year if he wants another

According to my coaching sources, RS’s are more intended/used for establishing good academic habits and adjusting to the rigor of college courses. Academics is not something coaches want to constantly have to worry about.

Eierman transferred to Iowa as a senior.  He got an extra covid year, so he was at Iowa for 2 seasons, after 4 at Mizzou.
