Penn State pinning with the bow and arrow

Against Wyoming Penn State scored 5 falls...4 of them utilized the bow and arrow (Zain Style).  I'm wondering if they are specifically being coached up on this technique or it was just something that worked on lesser competition (sorry Wyoming).

Wyoming has the lowest percentage of archery hunters in the nation at 7%. Only 4,063 out of 58,882 total deer hunters used a bow or crossbow. Hunters harvested 35,061 deer and 7% were taken with archery equipment, tying Montana and Colorado for the lowest percentage of deer harvested by a bow or crossbow.

Why do you think? I'd guess it has to do with the size of the huntable area. There's just too much space to cover with a bow. Same with Colorado and Montana. I'd bet more densely populated areas with less huntable areas and higher density of game would be at the top of the list.

The vastness of the land makes it difficult.  Out West you spot and stalk.  In the East you stalk and spot

I would say trees, square footage, and  culture. And mulies and wapiti are stronger than the whities.

50 to 75 yards and in for PA. Easy shot with a bow.

My daughter doesn’t like deer hunting but she does enjoy archery.

Yeppers. General rule of thumb.  Longest shot I could stretch is 300 yards over an ag field.  That's a chip shot out West.  Mostly hunt archery in PA.  Only do rifle season for the tradition and fun time at camp.  Will only rifle hunt out West.  Years ago after my first hunt in Colorado I came home and ordered a FFP (First Focal Plane) scope!

Pretty much everything we take is inside 100 yards, but a buddy of mine who is an expert in black powder took one last fall at 195 yards with a Pennsylvania flintlock. That is stretched out with that set up.

American Bison and deer with an Air Force Texan .45 calibre air rifle. Nicer to use than black powder. No flame & smoke. Good power. They have been used to take Cape Buffalo in Africa.

Amazing what Air Rifles can do.

Lewis & Clark had a 20 shot repeating Air Rifle on their western Expedition.

As for Bow & Arrow - a number of Air Rifles fire arrows and are very good for hunting.  Just one example.

Work well for many, especially those older who can no longer draw their hunting bows as when younger.
