From the Democratic side, the argument might be that Republicans lost trust in the media because they can’t handle the truth. "The news must be reliable because all my Democratic friends trust it."  An old Democrat is also stuck with their core memories of a trusted media.

But then, why have Independents lost trust too?  Are they Republicans pretending to be Independent? 

Or is it more likely that Republicans' skepticism led to fact-checking, exposing media distortions, and Independents, being more flexible thinkers, also recognized the same distortions?

This tells me the biggest threat to democracy is the media.

Yes, the press is now solidly the enemy of the people.   They don't tell the truth.  They distort event reporting to the benefit of the left.   Whenever they err on a story it is always to the benefit of the left.   They argue with any person interviewed that is not on the left.   They are not interesting in informing the people.   They are interested in steering the conversation in one direction only, towards the left.   If that isn't the enemy of the people, it is hard to tell what could be.
