Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Legislation to 'End the Squatters Scam & Protect Homeowners'

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he signed legislation “to end the squatters scam & protect homeowners.”

"We are putting an end to the squatters scam in Florida," DeSantis said in a release on his website. "While other states are siding with the squatters, we are protecting property owners and punishing criminals looking to game the system."

Under HB 621, “a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter from their property” if certain conditions are met, and it “also creates harsh penalties for those engaged in squatting and for those who encourage squatting and teach others the scam.”

It is about time that a state has taken this path.   For too long it has been legally acceptable for squatters to take over a house.   And the property owner, who pays the property taxes, has no rights to get rid of them.   That is just plain wrong.   Hopefully other states around the country will jump on board.   This is a long time coming and is a good thing for the property rights of property owners.

Can't believe that this is even a thing...how does someone rationalize it in their head that it is totally fine for people to come into someone else's property and then claim it as their own??  Not to even mention having laws that protect the people that do it...crazy!

Oh there are people on this site that will rationalize this as fair.  I mean those rich assholes probably weren’t using it anyway. 🤦‍♂️

Illegal aliens are the ultimate squatters.  And some of our colleagues on this site feel Americans deserve illegal alien squatters amongst us because of . . .  you know . . . come on, man . . .  the thing.  So hundreds of years ago someone's grandmother looked sidelong at someone else's grandmother 3 continents away so these peeps today get to take your house.  It's only fair.

Well, I just have to say it is about time this is happening.   We  had squatters in the neighborhood and the owners could not get back in.   I'm not sure how that ended up, but the house was sold (estate I think) and it was not in good shape.   That is not the way it should be.   You should not be forced to sell to get rid of the squatters.   All that time though, you get to pay the property taxes so you would think the social contract with the city/county would say you get to kick them out or have the police kick them out.    But no, you have to  take up to 6 months or more for that to happen.   That is just plain wrong.
