Yooooooooooooooo let's go boys! First up for USA will be Dom Parrish repechage as the second match on mat B. Then Brooks on mat C, Maroulis on mat B, and Lee on mat A. So many great first round matchups as well. RBY vs Harutyunyan will be very telling for how RBY at 57kg matches up w/ the field. Lastly, it looks like Sarlak from Iran either didn't make weight or didn't show at 57kg given the late notice after Micic pulled out, so Higuchi's sitting out with a first round bye.

Just rewatched and took some notes for my own benefit; might be helpful to someone else here. – Zou scores 2 TD off of reattack – Spencer scores 1 pushout w/ 2-on-1 – Zou scores 4 feet-to-back off of a really solid shot; Spencer's defense was mushy here (1 - 6) – Spencer scores 1 pushout from seatbelt – Spencer scores 2 TD from front headlock – Spencer scores 6 leg lace immediately after TD (10 - 6) – Zou slow to get up; medical time --- break (10 - 6) – Spencer takes some half-shots; looks content w/ being defensive – Not much action til 20s left – Zou gets 1 pushout on a solid shot where Spencer's defense was mushy again (10 - 7) – Immediately after, Zou gets 1 TD with a shot off the whistle that Spencer didn't seem to expect or defend against (10 - 9) imho Spencer's really gotta watch his defense. When he picked his shots and stayed in good position, he was fine, and we all know he's capable of doing that. The shots that Zou scored on were really well executed by him but also had next to zero defense from Spencer. Either that or Spencer gets an early TD and techs him with his par tarre

One point to consider here is that this story definitely went viral. Jordan's tweet got 2.5M views – and other similar stories about this got a ridiculously disproportionate amount of coverage compared with the normal exposure that wrestling gets at the olympics – especially for WFS. That's arguably a bad look for our sport, but it also brought much-needed exposure to wrestling for an olympics filled w/ bright & shiny new sports – where wrestling is oftentimes an afterthought for news outlets. I'd much rather that increased exposure go to Amit Elor or Sarah Hildebrandt's gold medal performances, but ads-based social media thrives on controversy. -

she was apparently hospitalized after spending all night cutting. no idea how that happens when she made weight the previous day, but that's the story as I understand it -
Helen Maroulis (WFS 57kg) draw is also on here:
-
Really happy with Lee's draw. As long as he can get past Zou again, his path to semis looks a lot better than anywhere else he could've ended up. Happy for Brooks that at least Yaz is on the other side.
-
I'm guessing since she had Susaki from Japan first round that she wasn't really expecting to win that and just hydrated more than usual after weigh-ins.
-
Just learned that WFS 50kg Vinesh Phogat has been hospitalized after spending all night trying to cut to make weight for the finals. Hope she recovers soon. https://www.instagram.com/p/C-XFbeIuJta/?igsh=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng%3D%3D

here's hoping Parrish does well in the repechange; 99% sure she'll get pulled in. Payton Jacobson's in the hole on mat C. I believe it's his first senior world team – maybe he'll buck the USA greco trend?
-
oooosh that was rough
-
FUJINAMI vs PARRISH up now on mat B – let's hope for an upset
-
good effort by rau in the last minute before that desperation attempt, but god dayumm do I hate greco. the offensive options are just so limited.

Looks like Hildebrandt teched Guzman (Cuba) the last time I could find that they wrestled each other: https://www.flowrestling.org/video/10945239-50-kg-semifinal-sarah-hildebrandt-usa-vs-yusneylis-guzman-cub Though it was a tight match before the leg laces kicked in.
-
So I guess it'll be Yusneylis Guzman (Cuba) vs Sarah Hildebrandt in the finals of WFS 50kg? And does that mean Vinesh doesn't medal at all since she's been DQ'ed? If so, that's crazy; she earned her right on the podium just by making the finals.

hildebrandt techs algeria. great performance!

let's go hildebrandt!
