Alvarez can’t have another year…can he ?
Cornell Kevin replied to Cornell Kevin's topic in College Wrestling
I in no way think that AJ should or will get a medical shirt. I do wish that they would be more distinct when writing the ncaa rules. It says that it needs to be filed “in a timely manner.”. Now clearly AJ (and Alvarez if this is what they are going for) is not in a timely manner but who is to say what exactly that is. Another thing with medical shirts is how they define 2 of the 3 major stipulations. 1- can’t be passed the midway point of season..ok when exactly is that? Are you referring to midway point competition wise, because teams start competing on all different dates. Or is it midway season from when they start practicing? Either way 1/27 has to be passed that point for Alvarez in 2024. 2- Cannot have competed in more than 30% of team’s matches. What the heck does that even mean ? Are we speaking of just duals? Do tournaments count where half the team may go to some and not others?   Althoign in 2023 I believe that he is ok on the midway point rule having not wrestled after the start of January (just like Bastida did this year) he wrestled in 8 dual meets and midlands. I would have to say that is more than 30% but with such little detail defining the rule, I wouldn’t doubt the threat of a law suit if denied. They need to put exact measures on these rules. 1- and exact day for midway point or point in date which you can’t then take a med shirt 2- They need to define a specific amount of matches wrestled where it is then to many to take a med shirt . This rather it be 10-12-15 whatever. 3- They need to put an expiration date on when a med shirt can be retroactively applied for as “reasonable time” means nothing -
Alvarez can’t have another year…can he ?
Cornell Kevin replied to Cornell Kevin's topic in College Wrestling
I was absolutely wrong in the sense of him transferring somewhere at the end of his career. At the time I misunderstood the entire covid year being something that didn’t count on your eligibility rather than an “extra year” which it vaguely says in the NCAA rules. At the time I was just going by what the rules said apparently talking it too literal . Yep that was me though. He would have had to transfer prior to the start of the 2021 season rather than stay with Cornell and take his second Olympic shirt If he was to get 5 cracks at ncaas that is. As far as 2023, He may make the cut off date but he did wrestle in much more than 30% of his teams matches having wrestled in 8 duals -
Looking at his wrestle stat, and looking at the current rules for red shirt/med shirt and covid year, I don’t see this happening. 2020- Freshman 2021 - Sophomore 2022- Still a sophomore because of free covid year in 2021. 2023- Still a sophomore because of a medical shirt taken in 2022. 2024- Junior 2025- Senior * He never took a red shirt but you can’t use red shirts retroactively. Even if you could, he would not qualify for a red shirt in 2020, 2023, 2024, or 2025 due to the fact that he wrestled in duals each of those years. * Some said that he was trying to retroactively get approved for a medical shirt. The rules say that it needs to be done in a timely manner although that is quite vague. What is not too vague, is the rules that state it needs to be a season ending injury in the first half of the season. You also cannot have wrestled in more than 30% of teams matches. The only seasons that he could be trying to get a med shirt for would be 2023, or 2024. In 2023 he wrestled in much more than 30% of his teams matches, having wrestled in 8 of their duals plus Midlands. In 2024, he went way past the half way point of the season having wrestled in a dual meet every week of January with his last one coming on January 27, just 5 weeks prior to conferences. 2020 he wrestled at Big Tens…2021 was the free covid year so you can’t be awarded an extra year that never counted, 2022 he used a medical shirt, and 2025 he AA’d. So unless they completely disregard the rules for 2023 or 2024, he does not qualify for a medical shirt. * I argued with this knuckle head on facebook for far too long in regards to this last point He argued that he could get a red shirt year for 2021. No he can’t. 1- It was the covid year. The covid year was just the year 2021 not counting against ones eligibility. It was not a free year that you use whenever you please 2- He was not a first semester freshman in 2021 and he wrested in duals so no soup for you So does anyone have a clue on how in the world they think he is going to have another year?? Another way to visualize it is he wrestled 6 years and never did he use a red shirt in this time He had 1 medical shirt year 2022 (1/6) He had 1 free covid year 2021 (2/6) He had 4 seasons of wrestling 2020-2023-2024-2025 (6/6)

I wondered that myself. Would it stop moving in that wrestlers advantage for the remaining duration of that period? Or would it be for as long as he is on top before the bottom wrestler escapes or reverses? Meaning if he gives up an escape and gets another takedown that period, the riding time would then go again for him? Who knows. Not many details on some of these rules.

What Happens When You Qualify Ten?
Cornell Kevin replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
Cornell did actually qualify all 10 guys in 2024 as well as 2025, however Vince Cornella withdrew shortly before the tournament in order to have reconstructive knee surgery. This is great stuff, can’t get enough of it, keep it coming! -
As seen below, I was able to get leaked photos of Gable training with our friend from down under in the Coed Breakdancing for LA 2028

I am not arguing that he can’t compete with some of the senior level guys, what I was saying was that he is not ready to make Final X yet and there certainly isn’t any shame in that for the 18 year old. Regardless of who Pantaleo lost to this week, doesnt matter. What I saw between that match and His finals match tonight leads me to believe that James Green and Yianni would both eat him up right now prolly by tech fall. No clue what’s was up with the finals match tonight it was very un-Duke like for him not to shoot or be the aggressor at all. He will for sure have to change that up before next months senior event. We can do A over B and B over C so A over C all day but the fact is James Green has made the senior world team at 70kg every time he has put his hat into the ring since 2015 which makes Yianni’s victory even that more impressive. I don’t think he last a whole match with Yianni or James Green -

Dean Hamiti and Wyatt Hendrickson defeated 2 NCAA champs
Cornell Kevin replied to Boring's topic in College Wrestling
Believe the question is asking for guys who had to beat two separate individuals who were already NCAA champs, not guys who were 2x champions. -

70kg notes: •How about Pantaleo not even placing at 70kg? He lost to Arrington 3-2 on back side after losing to Andonian by 4-4 criteria on front side. • Watch out for Arrington next year, he seems to be a whole new animal at 157 lbs as seen by his red shirt success at the weight. Two time blood rounder will be a blood rounder no more! • Pretty impressive for Ian Parker to take 3rd place. • PJ Duke to try and make X through challenge tourney? I know people mention PJ Duke jumping in to try and make Final X. I am a huge PJ Duke fan, been watching him dominate here in NY since he was in 7th grade. With that being said, I have my doubts about him being quite ready for these top tier senior level guys yet like a Yianni or James Green. When I watched him vs Pantaleo at this past world team trials for non olympic weights, the match was not really that close. Maybe it was just a bad match up for him style wise, but I don’t think he is quite there yet. Not that there is anything wrong with a HS kid not being the best in the country at seniot level yet lol. Not to take anything away from what Blaze, and Jax are doing, but it is that much harder for HS guys to compete at those 65-70-74kg weight classes at senior level I think. Duke will win a Gold this year at U20s and likely should have won it last year had it not been for that embarrassing cold spray performance show cased by his semi opponent who had clearly ran out of gas. •Great title for Yianni! • Yianni teched/pinned his way to final before beating Green 8-2. • Green has been nearly unbeatable vs domestic on our soil at 70kg. In fact, every time he has thrown his hat in for the 70kg world team spot, he has earned it. • Yianni is now 4-0 vs Green in FS. • although 8-2 final, that match was neck and neck till about a minute to go. Yianni in great shape. I think it’s safe to say that these two will rematch at Final X. Unless maybe Nick Lee or Zain were to jump in which I doubt. -

It was actually 5-2 Cardenas after Yianni lost the challenge. Yeah in normal speed looked like that was just a smooth chest wrap by Yianni but then they called it a feet to back for Cardenas followed by an exposure for Yianni. Man oh man did Yianni stomp him after that out scoring him 18-2 rest of the way! -

House Settlement Hearing - April 7, 2025
Cornell Kevin replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
It surprises me a little that they came back with absolutely no modifications on the roster limit as the judge had strongly suggested. She even said on April 7th something along the lines that if it wasn’t worked on that they risked her declining the entire deal. With that being said, I don’t see her doing so. I think it will pass. -
The 1994 Intermat Forum Hodge Trophy Goes To...
Cornell Kevin replied to Wrestleknownothing's topic in College Wrestling
When I was in HS, I got to go to the NCAAs At Carver. The year was 1995, it was my sophomore year. Anyway, I look back and what an experience! I got to see: - the first 4 Hodge Trophy winners in one tournament. Was this the only time ever that an NCAAs would have 4 Hodge winners (to be) in it? No idea, but to have the first 4 was special. Jaworsky that same year (1st one they did 1995) Les Gutches would win the 2nd ever Hodge in 1996. He was at these 1995 NCAAs and quite dominant winning his first NCAA title. He was the Hodge runner up to Jaworsky in 1995 Kerry McCoy would win the 3rd ever Hodge in 1997.. He was at these NCAAs entering as the returning NCAA champ but would get upset in the semis and take 3rd.. He would then red shirt and comms back to win his second title and a Hodge as a senior. MarK Ironside would win the 4th ever Hodge in 1998. He was at these NCAAs as a freshman and would finish 6th at these NCAAs I was at and go on to finish 3-1-1 the next 3 years. Other things I got to see which I will always remember at these NCAAs • 2x NCAA champion at the time, Lincoln McIlravy getting upset in the final, at Carver mind you, to Steve Marianetti (Illinois) 13-10 snapping his 57 match win streak and ultimately preventing him from becoming a 4xer as he would red shirt the following year and then win his 3rd title a year later. Lincoln had beaten Marianetti both times he faced him previous to this (1993 NCAA semis and two weeks prior to this loss at the 1995 Big ten finals 6-4). This was shocking at the time. Marianetti took him down 5x in that final. • Kerry McCoy having his 88 match win streak snapped in the semifinals with a 4-3 loss to Northern Iowa’s Justin Greenlee. Shocking! McCoy came back to take 3rd. McCoy was the MOW of big tens two weeks prior, he was the defending NCAA champ having gone 48-0 the year prior, and was on an 88 match win streak. Had he been able to win that match, he would have likely ended his career with a 132 match win streak as that semi loss was his only loss from his soph to senior year (131-1). He actually wrestled 190 as a freshman and only went 19-17. • Just seeing Dan Gable coach (he only would go on to coach two more seasons): This and seeing him at Carver, it was incredible. The newspapers were filled with wrestling and talking front page all over. • A guy from my high school, Dan Payne, wrestled heavy weight for Clarion and we got to see him get on the podium which was special. she entered college as a 177 pounder and ballooned up to a 285. • Got to go down into the wrestling room and in there practicing were Tom and Terry with each other along with Bruce Baumgartner and many others . Ventured a little off topic here but just wanted to share my experience. -

There was a 3 way tie at NCAAs for 24th place. They have included all 3 teams in the lotto making the total 14 rather than 12. -

Cornell Kevin replied to Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan's topic in College Wrestling
Vincent Cornella I believe is much superior to Saunders. Saunders showed some good stuff this year with a major over Josh Edmond and some other good wins going 20-8 but Vince Cornella when healthy is too notch. Not only is he a junior bronze medalist but he bonused his way through EIWAs as a freshman. He last in tie breaker to Lachlan at ncaas who took 3rd . Then on back side he was destroying Swiderski 8-0 with 5 minutes of riding time before getting cement mixed and stuck with seconds left. His sophomore year he tore an acl during the Edmond match and still won. He couldn’t make it through Confernces though and was out all this past season: Talking about a guy who best Koderhandt 15-2 though. I like him to win the 141 spot. As far as Greg D, he did beat Milani last year. It was close but I believe that was just out of familiarity. Greg is far superior. If he can stay healthy, and that’s a huge if,,he is a podium threat. Started out 9-0 last year before injuring his neck and being done for year.
