This is a fair point but I think that got cancelled out when they doubled our points in the ACC tournament and we finished in 4th while they cruised to the team title lol.

Losing McNeil really hurts UNC. Honestly, I’m pretty disappointed with the Koll era thus far. McNeil never got any better and now he’s leaving the same wrestler he was 3 years ago, the recruiting classes aren’t noteworthy as a whole (especially if the goal is to be competitive with State and VT), and we have been less competitive in the ACC and NCAA tourney than we were with Coleman. I do understand that UNC doesn’t invest heavily in wrestling and that’s a barrier. But when you look around at programs like UNI with Coach Schwab (who also doesn’t have many resources) and look at the historical pedigree of Coach Koll- this kind of news is pretty frustrating.

I was thinking this too. I remembered last year the cadence was different. It’s purely a preference thing- but I really, really dislike it for what it’s worth. I personally think every weight should wrestle 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 simultaneously. And the weights should go 1 by 1. I’m preaching to the choir here, but even taking 3rd and being an all American is a once in a lifetime crowning achievement. It should be treated as such. It does feel cheap and watered down when you have heavyweights wrestling for 7/8 beside 133s wrestling for 5/6 and so on. At one point in the medal matches the 125s went flying off the mat and Shane/Trent made a joke the refs better grab them before they get run over by a heavyweight. Just doesn’t seem right to me. Edit to add: solely talking about D1. I know D2&D3 logistics are completely different.

Give Caliendo another year of pushing Angelo and vice versa and Mikey might get one next year. Angelo is a great training partner for him to help simulate scoring on MM.

Felt the exact same way. The “head down, half-ass double under hook, drive straight forward until opponent physically can’t circle in anymore” technique really needs to be looked at this offseason. That’s stalling too in my opinion.

Add me to the group. I’m really disappointed with some of the athletes wrestling tonight and representing the sport. Compare the Keck/McEnelly 4-1 to the 125/133/149 matches. The former were two gladiators that left it all on the mat and the latter were dudes taking advantage of sumo style wrestling rules.

The result of that match doesn’t feel right… Lovett just hanging out after a big push out shove for the next 6 minutes.

I get what you’re saying but you’re essentially making an argument for make up calls when stalling isn’t actually happening. Ayala wasn’t stalling there. He escaped and then sprawled immediately. You’d be hard pressed to find similar stall calls from the rest of the season in that exact situation. He stalled plenty the rest of the match- call it then.

Agree with this. I thought the call could’ve/should’ve come much earlier if he was going to do it. The ref put himself in a spot where he ended up calling it in a situation that wasn’t actually stalling in my opinion. Can’t happen in a national championship match. Refs have to make the call when it’s appropriate and swallow the whistle when it’s not. (Coming from someone who’s far from an Iowa fan)

Brock has gotten so damn good. Guy is an animal. Refs kind of suck tonight. Scared to call stalls, missing points. Not a great product we are putting forward so far…

What’s incredible to me is listening to DC- I’d never think he wrestled a day in his life if I didn’t know any better. I’m really not trying to pile on like last year. But goodness man, it’s just not good.

Refs need to be more aggressive with stall calls early. Both 125s needed one in the first. I’m typically a big “let the wrestlers decide it” guy, but clearly those 2 weren’t interested in deciding it on their feet.

From the Matcast angle it looked like he went straight for a smooch on the lips . I’m sure it was just an angle thing, but what a perfect way to end the session lol

I’m a UNC fan and have to say- Trent is incredible. He’s been professional, fair to every wrestler, and hasn’t shown any bias towards his past teammates. He also has done a great job breaking the action down for people that may not fully understand what’s happening. Shane has also done a great job this weekend helping Trent find his voice. Matcast has been really, really enjoyable.

Ferrari reminds me of watching traditional heavyweights wrestle. Like watching Adam Coon wrestle Colton Schultz. He’s a statue that can’t move laterally and wants to be in defensive positions. Credit to Buchanan for that huge ride in the 2nd. Ferrari needs to stop lifting like a power lifter and start agility/speed training harder if he wants to win another natty. He also needs a more ways to score when he needs a point.

I just switched to espn from mat cast for the first time tonight. Lasted 15 seconds. Back to matcast. The commentary is so much better with Trent and Shane.
