I'm guessing Michigan will be looking to add a new assistant or associate head with Churella stepping away from his role. Big shoes to fill there.

Can you please elaborate on the damage to UTC please?

One point that I argue over is the practice room and the use of lightweight mats in daily practice facilities. The lightweight mats are okay for duals or tournaments where you are wrestling 7 minute matches, but DAILY drilling, practicing, and grinding on the lightweight mats will take a hard toll on the athlete's bodies. Wisconsin had a NEWLY remodeled room when Bono started with double traditional Resilite mats. Perfect and forgiving surface for daily training. Then Bono started, the nice mats were removed and replaced with lightweight mats. The only reason I can think of making the change is because someone got paid.

Kids are different today, but I disagree about Gable. My opinion is that Gable didn't teach his kids to wrestle, he taught them to WIN. I made the joke to my friend who wrestled for Gable in the early 90's that if Gable became Iowa's Softball coach after he left wrestling, Iowa Softball would have probably won 10 straight NCAA titles.

AJ Heeg will transfer to Northern Illinois to be with his brother - just a guess

A school where the academics work out? What does that mean?
-
Nope. No preferred treatment other than they can go into the portal outside of the regular calendar dates like grad students can. The portal is rough. You have SOLID kids in there competing with existing roster kids and incoming HS recruits. The kids with the biggest disadvantage trying to find a new home are the ones who never started or have little accolades.

I agree, I would open up the age from 24-28 because if a kid graduates at 18 (like a great amount do) that aligns with 19yr redshirt, 20-23 RS Freshman through RS Senior years. That was the "norm" before COVID and all the NIL, RS, Medicals, Olympics, ect. The good ol' rule of 5 years to compete 4.

I think Lemley 149 and I think Cam goes to 165.

A lot of people go to college for 8 years, but usually those people are called doctors.
-
Hopefully he completes his Cornell degree instead of walking away before then.

Looking at Flyingcement's list, there are 188 kids listed in the portal. Thats just about 25% of total of D1 starters. While I know that not all the kids in the portal are starters or will be starters, that figure is just crazy to consider the amount of kids looking for a new school. Then you factor into the total the number of HS recruits that are incoming and things get crowded fast with the 30 kid roster limit.

Davino is the man at 133. If he went down to 125 he would destroy everyone at that weight. Next best at 125 would be Lilledahl and Davino would tech him in a period or two.

Damn. Pretty not cool behavior by the kids father

This has NOTHING to do with College Wrestling. Please post in the correct forum. -
That's unfortunate. I tell friends all the time - there are kids that wrestle while they are in school and there are kids that are at school to wrestle. Sad in that there are such few career and earnings opportunities in wrestling that all kids don't use wrestling to get the best education or opportunities they can.

Yes, that was my point. Some schools are better than others at self reporting.
-
One item to note is there is no "NCAA Police" that goes around and enforces rule violations. NCAA member schools are all self-reporting and it is their own Compliance Department that makes sure the rules are followed and issues their own "punishment" when NCAA rules are violated.

I don't know about Stanford specifically, but I can tell you is that most Graduate or Masters programs waive GMAT requirements if the student recently graduated with a strong GPA or from a strong institution. That definitely helps with these folks gettings into grad programs. And some Athletics Departments have favor with Admisssions to help get these transfers in even if admission deadlines have passed.

There are some wrestlers that I just wish would go away.

Is there anything Roger Chandler could do to lose his job?
rsotelo replied to WrestlingRash's topic in College Wrestling
I don't know the coach, but he was assistant to Minkel to 18 years and the program stunk then too. I remember one year they were in ABSOLUTE last place at NCAAs with NEGATIVE 1 points. It was super surprising to me when Chandler was appointed head coach to replace Minkel. What they needed to do was blow up the staff at that point and start fresh. There is NO REASON any Big10 program isn't performing in wrestling. -
Way too early transfer portal entries

That's why I said fishy. - McKenna was BEFORE the whole NIL thing. I am curious if there were other factors on why he left Stanford. ALSO - most often when a kid commits to a tough school academics wise, it isn't because they had a change of heart (although it could be), it's often because they couldn't get into the school. D1 college wrestling is NOT a level playing field. Kids at Princeton for example get NO breaks or assistance when it comes to academics. They travel to Las Vegas for Cliff Keen on a Wednesday, and scramble to find wifi between connecting flights so they can turn in their homework on time or take a test since they get NO leeway on school work. Only to arrive in Vegas, where kids from other schools that offer athletic accomodations to student athletes have been at the pool since the previous Sunday. -

This is a quick outline on how these $250k NIL payout work: $70k - out of state tuition at an expensive State or Private college $24k - Annual rent for an apartment $110k - Estimated retail value for a high end, loaded pick up truck that a local car dealer let's the student athlete drive around for the year - demo vehicle like the salemen get to drive. $46k - Refund from their student account that allows them to buy books, food, or any extras they need to have spending money for - this comes out to about $3800/month **There is NO money bag handed to wrestlers with $250k in cash. This is wrestling, not football or basketball, where most head coaches make under $100k and most assistances make under $50k -

I could see kids leave after 4 years AFTER they earned their degree from a prestigious University like Real Woods did. But to leave Stanford for Ohio State without earning your degree just sounds fishy -
