As mentioned, the girlfriend may not get in trouble in that scenario, but the player could if they shared any information that wasn’t public. Athletes are more likely going to be around other athletes, and have access to facilities that non-athletes don’t. I’m sure the NCAA would like to prohibit athletes’ friends from betting as well, but they have no jurisdiction over non-athletes.

While I agree there is really no reason to restrict college athletes from betting on professional sports, again the biggest issue seems to be betting on Iowa sports. I assume that’s the reason some guys did NOT have a full season of eligibility taken from them. Has anyone lost more than a season? That could be a bit harsh depending on the allegations. Sure, the NCAA likes the money from the gambling companies. But they don’t want to risk their sports being compromised, so they restrict their athletes from betting on them, and it makes sense to prohibit the entire athletic department considering the likelihood of knowing other athletes. The NFL does similar with rules against players sharing non-public information, as well as things like rules against office staff members betting even though they don’t have any impact on the outcome of the game.

I have no clue about his girlfriend. I mostly just thought it was odd his twitter bio simply said “Northwestern Alumni” or something. And he has tweeted/x’ed (is that what it’s called?) recently.

Playing fantasy football or entering a super bowl squares pool would be parallel to a moving violation. Heck maybe even betting on the NFL. Not placing bets on your own university.

At 2:45, it talks about players sharing “non-public information.” Not saying Nelson got any “non-public information,” but it seems logical to try to prevent that in general, especially if the question is why “should” it be a rule. At the very least, most people seem to agree that betting on other teams at your university is a no-no due to the likelihood of getting insider information.

Exactly, that's why I was a bit confused of his emphasis on "PERMANENT," since even if it was only a 1 year suspension, he'd be done.

There was some chatter on HR awhile back that the penalties could involve not ever even being allowed to coach in the NCAA. Could that be what he's alluding to with saying "PERMANENTLY banned"?

I think missing the meeting can be forgiven, but he should still know the rules. I’d agree it should be mostly on him, but the fact that his dad & uncle are the coaches is certainly not a great look for them.

Nelson is also in his 6th year, so he’s what, 24? Not like you can really use the “dumb kid” excuse (for either the gambling or this tweet)
